His abrasive demeanor is part of his character. He's miserable because he's not living his dream life. But don't forget. In the carwash episode, he's worried about his "prized possession" in the trunk of the car, he's worried it'll get stolen or damaged. Peggy is convinced it's a porn mag.. and she's half right. Because when he opens it, it's a family portrait of him, Peg and the kids, and he has the goofiest grin on his face because of it. He may not always *like* his family. But he loves them more than he loves himself.

Watching this show so much when I was younger shaped my idea of what a marriage should be. Thats probably why I can see so many parallels between their marriage and my own. But hey... its been 15 years so its working.

That is the thing about Al, he would never admit it publically but he does love his family and especially loves Peggy. He has refused to cheat on her despite having the opportunity and beats the crap out of anybody that upsets or shows interest in her.
