I'm not the right person to give advice on how to become a better photographer, film maker or RU-vidr, but I think RU-vid and Photography have made me a better man than I would be if I hadn't followed this path.
Thanks for watching!

Definitely agree Shawn. I think the common denominator is being outdoors and sharing it with others. It makes the world go round and lets our natural creative and imaginary juices flow, something that too much TV kills. End result a better person. Cheers from the Rock, keep it going!

Well said Shawn. Few fully appreciate how hard the backcountry is on camera gear. Keeping a battery hungry 4K camera and a hefty gimbal rolling smoothly out there 3-4 hours per day, for up to a week through portages and inclement weather becomes logistically challenging. I spend 2 hours in the tent every night just cleaning gear, charging batteries and running media backups to a field drive.

Hi Chris . Glad RU-vidrs are making videos on how to make videos . Too many think that you just go out and shoot then download . They don't think about the extra and I mean a lot of extra gear you have to take . I was recently watching YOUR TV BELLEVILLE and saw you in the background making your video TOYS FOR THE NORTH , something like behind the scene would be interesting . Dave Whipple from BUSHRADICAL just made a video on what he learnt about film making when he was on ALONE Season 4 . He stops here when he travels from MI to AK and back . How is Julia and baby Prouse doing ? When was he/she born ? The 18th ? ATB . Ken 🇨🇦 .

"Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one else is watching". I don't know you, Shawn, but in watching your videos over the past year I have a sense that this is the kind of person you are. We all have our hang-ups and issues and we do want people to care for us and like us, even people we don't really know, so we always try to present ourselves in the best light. I feel like we don't need to see every. single. aspect of your life- we all need some privacy- but to show more than just your "best" shows us who you really are. Whether it be building on the sauna or hunting or cooking. Whatever. You didn't just show your success at getting a deer, you also showed your going out again and again to get one only to fail- until you got it. Life is not all about sunshine and rainbows. A lot of times it's more B rolls and that's okay. BTW, I did enjoy your blooper footage at the end of one of your previous videos. The one where you were out looking at the are area for your outpost cabin.
@michaelcaraway2305
@michaelcaraway2305 5 лет назад
I agree very much with the quote "integrity is doing the right thing when no one else is watching" , however, if you make a habit of having integrity when others are watching it bleeds over into your private life also. Without a judge of what is ethical then we don't understand ethics.

I suspect your circular ramblings aren't too far off from what a lot of us think...or how we think, lol... I think what makes them good to listen to is a combination of your soothing soft-spoken voice, the fact you do care, the way you look into the camera and address -us- as you would a friend...and for some of us, it's been a long time since we had the leisure to sit and listen to a friend ramble.

Or bad days (particularly on Facebook). Since then I have come to see social media as generally good. Where else could I see people from all over the world living their lives and realise how alike we all are. And ‘sharing’ those lives. My horizons have widened even though I am not well travelled. And on top of that I have learnt a huge amount in all sorts of fields. I almost feel I could attempt a log cabin build! Keep the videos coming Shawn. Give Cali a pat from me.

While it's important to understand and pay attention to the thoughts of your viewers try to weigh that there is a percentage of people that will be "offended" by just about anything. Hey Shawn, your attitude about RU-vid being a barometer for your work and behavior is so refreshing. 95% of the time I hear You Tubers say and do questionable things and then say "No judgement" to avoid any criticism. I know many criticize unkindly, and that has to be annoying, but I'm sure some are constructive and helpful. Thanks for your time and excellent content.

This is exactly what I was talking to my wife about. I feel the same way as far as capturing a moment that may seem mundane but accentuates the subject or content in the end. I've learned more about the outdoors and photography watching your videos than any others. I've spent my life in the timber and on the water over my 49 yrs. In that time I never took many photos except that of a disposable camera because it was small and light. I thoroughly enjoy the photos and the video. Now I'm getting into photography more from watching yours and realizing if i had better equipment back then i would have been further ahead now. I just realized now I'm more interested in it as a guy about to turn 50 than i was in my 20's and 30's. Thank you for that!! I look forward to your videos and photography in the future to help me a better photographer.

I absolutely agree with your premise that working on something (such as your RU-vid channel, photography, social media) can make you a better person. Back in 2012, my wife and I decided to simplify our lives and made the big decision to start a podcast about our journey to share our experience and also as an accountability tool. Like you, I feel we were better for having done it. It isn't easy, and it's sometimes very uncomfortable to share your challenges and failures publicly, but doing that show not only helped a lot of others (based on our feedback, iTunes reviews and over a million downloads), but it helped us achieve the lifestyle we are living now: simpler living, small walkable village, margin in our finances, schedule, and possessions...just as we planned! Thanks for what you do Shawn. It's inspiring, truly helpful, and I look forward to every new video!

When you've got a passion, and a lot of people watching you develop it, you can't take shortcuts because you know you'll hear about it, be it praise or critique. You were already a good person, and I'm going to put it to you another way: because you are a good person, you developed your passion for photography in a more conscientious way and that became a circular path to better yourself because you were already a better man than many. You are so liked because you are so likable! :) [What was Cali crunching on for awhile at the beginning, and it was so cute at the end when she climbed into the other chair and very patiently waited for you to pat her.] And your photography is gorgeous!

Wisdom is in knowing ourselves. You Shawn are an enriched man to have your following reminding you of the best way forward. Not that we are necessarily "evil" or "wicked" but sometimes we are a little thoughtless when we're busy thinking about "bigger things". It's healthy to be reminded, so kudos to you sir for appreciating this. I salute your candour.

I’d love to see you & Peter do a colab! Unrelated: I completely agree with you about generations learning from each other. Both younger & older generations need to embrace the idea that they have as much to learn from each other as they have to teach. A more inter-generationally cooperative society could do so much more than we are currently doing.

Robertine Buckley Hi😊. I agree with you. I'm learning more about digital photography and enjoying it. I learned back in the 70s with film photography using a twin lens reflex camera then advancing to 35 mm SLR. Enjoyed experimenting w/manual settings & different films. It's an interesting process to adjust to digital photography after years of "eye balling" exposure settings.😊

Shawn: My perspective to your video's is that of a videographer for 35 years. Some still photography, but mainly video. You combine an excellent grasp of utilizing light, assembling multiple components to give the product an overall feel of letting the viewer taste the complete experience, and in the subject - a balance of conditions that you experience and endure based on the environment you are working in. I think most of your audience would agree that we feel like we are "there and involved" with you. I know from Ronnie and I, we experience a full range of emotions from your capturing spectacular scenery-harsh environment-joy with your ever present sidekick Cali-and your penchant for sharing and teaching. You may have thought you were " talking in circles" , as you mentioned , but that very part of your discussion , about how those of us who grew up without the internet are in the unique and perhaps even enviable position to be able to pair our previous way of obtaining knowledge and assimilating information with the younger generation's online method of gaining knowledge/ learning things , made me appreciate a bit more having grown up without the web , instead of lamenting all that we perceive to have previously missed out on . Besides , which group actually missed out here , after all ? Thankfully , being "older" does have it's benefits ;-) . Thanks , as always , for sharing your thoughts and wisdom with us . ATB

Speaking for myself, I can honestly say that you seldom get off on a tangent that is irrelevant or boring, at least not to the point of losing my attention. Quite the contrary.. I find myself submerged in whatever you are talking about. Not sure how the rest of y’all feel, but wanted to throw that out there. Thanks again, Shawn. 🌲

I really enjoyed this video. Nature and landscape photography is my hobby too. It changes your perspective and attention to detail. I look forward to hearing your tips in the future. I gotta say, I got a kick out of hearing Cali chewing her bone off camera too!

Shawn, you are a pretty inspirational man and you have helped jump start my ambition to build an off grid cabin off a piece of land that I own. Proud to call you a fellow Canadian and you encompass all the things that make Canadians great. Keep up the good work.

I have been shooting still photography, mostly outdoors, exclusively for decades. I have always taken shots at unusual angles and heights for a different perspective on the subject matter. I have yet to try film photography; however, you have definitely peeked my interest. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and suggesting two of the individuals you and your wife watch who have helped hone your filming. I would like to share with you how my first attempt turns out.

The camera work on this chanel is wonderful..You already and do a fantastic job.There is more that you want to learn,I am sure , but the filming makes us all feel we are there with you in your beautiful surroundings as the seasons change.A pleasure to watch each and every video.

This one is really fantastic. You're a thinker, Shawn, as well as a doer, and both of those traits draw people to your channels. I do think social media is neither good nor bad on its own, but is just a tool like any other - with the potential for either good or bad effect, based on the character of whoever is using it. A hammer can be used to build something beautiful, or to destroy something. I am glad you and your wife have gotten so much good from your love of photography, and now feel that you both give and receive from the connection to your fans. But that is just a reflection of how you guys think about life. It's not so much that social media is good for you, but that you choose to use it in a way that's good for you (and for a lot of other people).

I really enjoy your work; the photography is first rate, watching a project develop not knowing the outcome is exciting, weather and its consequences is informative and new to me. So, enjoy yourself, give us what you produce without looking back.

Oh Shawn don't be so hard on yourself. You guys are producing some amazingly high quality work. Thank you for all your sharing. PS. If you were ever going to take on an apprentice I would be a willing padawan learner. You would be the Jedi master. Minus the light sabers.

Funny that you talk about Peter McKinnon. I was thinking the other day that you and Peter should collaborate in some way. Keep up the great work Shawn, you're a great source of inspiration!

The editing of your videos is 'on point' SO GOOD!!! I sometimes watch your videos a couple of times, once for just enjoying them & again for the technical stuff. Yup, they're that good. ❤️🙌🏻

Wow! Those are some really great photos! Just getting started here..... and I got to say, with all the craziness going on in the world, the content of your uploads is by far my favourite here on RU-vid. After watching your videos, the world just seems a little less crazy. As always, thanks for sharing.

I've said on at least two occasions now when the lead into a cabin video has been of Hollywood standard, and I meant every word. Probably the best few minutes of film on YT.
