4:57:24 That's precisely what is happening. The game starts mostly on Adol with visions of Dana, then it constantly switches the character you are playing from Adol to Dana and vice versa, they meet around the middle of the game, and finally at the end they have to say goodbye to each other. I do think the Violin and Cello represent them both really well.
@SBaby
@SBaby Год назад
Despite them parting ways (which is not a new thing to Adol, having to part ways with implied love interests), it doesn't feel depressing though. Given what you learn about Adol in Lacrimosa, there is an implication that they will eventually meet again, (probably in his last adventure where he goes to the North Pole and is never seen or heard from again).

I wanted to explain the premise of the Ys games incase you wanted to know without any spoilers. The games main character is Adol Christin. a world famous adventurer havin written up to a hundred books about his travels. Every game in the series is one of his hundred books. The games aren't in chronological order it starts with ys 1+2 followed by the newest game ys X (10). Ys VIII is about how he gets stranded on a deserted island and survives together with the other castaways from the ship Adol was on.

4:04:12 Your impression of Garden of Celen was spot on! It is a small, beautiful but ruined garden that acts like a keystone to the late-game story with so much historical significance in the in-game world. Looking around the area and hearing this track, you can immediately feel the weight of the past and the heavy emotions of those who had come to that location before. Then it transitions to the Dana leitmotif and the parallel major you talked about which gives a sense of hope.

Awesome OST, appreciate the music theory analysis as always too! My favorite pieces from the OST are probably "Lacrimosa of Dana", "Sunshine Coastline" and "Next Step Toward The Unknown". Though, I really love so many of the pieces from this OST. I actually found out about the entire Ys series because I randomly bumped into Sunshine Coastline on youtube. Fast forward to now and I have played almost every game in the long running series. My favorite Ys soundtrack overall probably goes to Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Jindo did an amazing job arranging the classic tracks from Ys 3, the he game of which The Oath in Felghana is a remake of.

Another thing I’d like to mention is that indeed there is theme A “Lacrimosa of Dana” that is used in many of the tracks of this OST (with my favorite use of it being in “Volitional Decision”), but there is also what you could call theme B with it being “Dana” (you can hear it at 3:06:27 ) which can also be heard in numerous other tracks like “the sibylline road”, “Yesterday in Eternia”, “Royal Capital Aigius” and “The Leaning Tower Baja” between others.

It's really hard to say which is my favorite. Partially because the ost is amazing, but also because Falcom keeps making more arrangements and remixes of their OSTs. There was another Ys 8 super ultimate with more songs, and their latest Falcom Boss Rush album has more remixed Ys 8 tracks. Sad I couldn't catch much live, but glad to see you enjoyed it!

@DarkDruid7
@DarkDruid7 Год назад
I'd like to provide my analysis for the themes heard in 5:06:48 (Riddles of the Labyrinth). 5:07:41 You said "We've heard these themes before." These themes seem to be from 1:48:17 (Yesterday in Eternia, AKA the town theme), which is an important theme also heard in 3:06:59 (Dana). It's possible I'm wrong and the theme from the next track mentioned is heard instead. 5:08:18 is the theme from A Footprint in the Wet Sand 55:29. Context for the track Riddles of the Labyrinth. Like with A Footprint in the Wet Sand, you are diving deep in exploration when Riddles of the Labyrinth plays, except instead of roaming sandy beaches, you are navigating and fighting your way through dungeons. It's also important to mention that you are playing as Dana solo, and that's why it makes sense that we hear one of her themes (Yesterday in Eternia/Dana). Now I'm going to talk a bit about 3:06:27 (Dana). 1:51:43 (Sibylline Road) and 1:48:17 (Yesterday in Eternia) each have one of the important themes of Dana. It's cool to mention that in the game, you actually hear the former two tracks before the track Dana plays. So by the time Dana is played, you are already familiar with the themes it's comprised of. And, finally, I don't need to talk about theme A because it's heard in many places in the OST and you were excellent at identifying the theme when it was heard. But I will point out the coolest instance of it which is heard at 4:20:29. Anyway, that's enough of my raving.

It’s nice how the ”hidden” plot of Maia’s dream is not said out loud in the game’s script itself, but there’s a music piece called ”One Dream, One Reality” that is kind of on the nose. Spoilers follow. … There is just one reality, from where Adol comes from, and one dream (Maia’s), where Dana comes from. The isle of Seiren is where the dream overlaps into reality, being Maia’s physical domain. When Adol and Dana slap down the creature holding the dream up, Adol wakes up and Dana no longer exists since the dream is gone. The reality is fine, though. There’s also no real time travel despite the appearance of it, because the dream’s entire timeline exists simultaneously with reality and Maia just retroactively changes the entire dream timeline every time Adol or Dana interact with it.

I love all these tracks a *LOT* so it's practically impossible to select one song that rise above all else, and that literally includes ALL of Falcom's games, not just Ys series. But from this game, and probably best of all Ys tracks, I must say Red Line -021- it's just absolutely off the charts! The only way I could describe that track is *relentless!* Because that's what it is. Pure awesomeness that never gives you a moment of break. Absolutely loving it. This also gave me a whole new perspective to many of these songs and watching your reactions to them was amazing. It's my first time watching any of your content too, but certainly not the last one! These games and the music especially has been created with so love, passion and care. And it really shows. And it's literally just as amazing in all Ys games. Oh! And if I could recommend another OST for you to react to, try Dark Cloud for PS2! 😊

Big Ys VIII fan here, including its soundtrack. One thing I never realized about Deadly Temptation until I listened through it on this video was the thematic material in the bassline of the chorus (15:02). The first time through, it does a chromatic descent all the way down to raised 4, and then brings it back to 5 (1 -> raised 7 -> natural 7 -> raised 6 -> natural 6 -> 5 -> raised 4 -> 5). Then it goes through that pattern again, but swaps out the ending for a iv -> V -> i progression to end out the phrase. That bassline is used all the time in Theme A, even as early as the opening theme. I've usually been able to catch the thematic material when it comes to melodies on past listens of the soundtrack, but it's fun finding other ways these themes are weaved throughout everything!

Amazing video! Some of my favorite parts: 1. Seeing the look on your face when THAT PART of Next Step Toward the Unknown kicked in 2. Being so confounded by the chord progression of Great Plains: Pan-Gaia that you forgot to do the actual analysis Ys VIII is my favorite game of all time and it's always so exciting to see people react to it and its incredible OST. I'm glad you liked it! And your analysis helped me have an even deeper appreciation for these songs I already love. Side note: I always saw Great Plains: Pan-Gaia to be a sort of counterpart to Sunshine Coastline. Sunshine plays in the first big open area you reach on the south side of the island, while Pan-Gaia plays on the first big open area you reach on the north side. The "hooks" of the songs sound similar, and both songs give the overall feeling of "look at all this adventure before you", though Sunshine emphasizes the more hopeful and whimsical side of that adventure, while Pan-Gaia emphasizes the danger of adventure.

This earned a follow from me! If you want a suggestion of a vg ost that's obscure/unusual/really good, I suggest looking up Terranigma. It was released near the end of the SNES era, and the two composers put the sound chip through the wringer to get what they wanted. It shows. Some of the best tracks are the overworld themes, like Underworld.

Just thought I’d put it out there seeing as this is the most recent video: You should really give the soundtrack of the SNES game “Plok!” a listen. The soundtrack was done by Tim Follins, who is also behind other great game soundtracks like “Silver Surfer” and “Solstice (NES)”. In fact, the harmonica sample used in the game’s title theme had such high fidelity that Shigeru Miyamoto himself had to pry open the cartridge because he couldn’t believe the SNES could produce sound that good.

It makes sense that a track with the word 'lacrimosa' in it would be played during a sad moment though, since the word 'lacrimosa' is Latin for weeping or tearful. Of course this game also uses it in a hopeful sense later on too (as well as in an ominous sense).

6:18:42 Oh man, it's hard to pick my favorite from the Ys 8 OST, there's so many tracks I enjoy There's In Side My Head, which is the version of Next Step Toward the Unknown with lyrics And Next Step Toward the Unknown is also one of my favorites There's Vanishing Trail Oceanos is fun You'll See Out the End of the Tales is a lot of fun (Falcom always goes ham for their final dungeon themes, and that one is no exception) A-to-Z is a lot of fun Night Survivor is so drastically different from the rest of the OST that I can't help but enjoy it Hope Alive is played during my absolute favorite boss fight in the game so that gets some brownie points from me Tangled Jungle Trick and Woods of Elevated Coral Reef and Leaning Tower Baja are fun dungeon themes For my favorite though, it's gotta be a tie between Next Step Toward the Unknown and You'll See Out the End of the Tales Yeah the Ys 8 OST is my favorite OST out of the Ys series haha As far as the pronunciations: Ys - the word "geese" without the "g" (most people use this pronunciation because the original Japanese pronunciation is "eesu") Dana - dah-na (sorta similar to donna, but not quite the same) Iclucian - yeah, it's "ick-loo-see-an" (for context, Dana's name is Dana Iclucia) Celen is actually supposed to be Seren, which is pronounced as "seh-ren" Seiren is "say-ren" Oceanos is supposed to be Oceanus, which in-game is pronounced as "oh-key-an-us" Etania is supposed to be Eternia, which is pronounced the way it looks - "ee-ter-nee-uh" Aigius is supposed to be Aegias, which is pronounced in-game as "uh-gee-us" (with the g being a softer sound)

@@Thunderhawk51 That's your opinion on the weakest game in the series? There's no way Monstrum Nox is weaker than the PS2 version of Ys V Lost Kefin, which has some of the worst and most tedious dungeon design I've ever seen. Ys V on SNES wasn't so hot either, though for different reasons than the PS2 edition (SNES version has the worst implementation of magic I have ever seen in an RPG). Other than Ys V, I think Ys III Wanderers from Ys is pretty dang weak, too - especially the SNES edition that doesn't have functioning hitboxes. Ys IV Mask of the Sun (SNES) and Ys IV Mask of the Sun - A New Theory (PS2) are also very weak games. SNES one is much worse than PS2 in my opinion, but they're both pretty low on the list.

@@MusicTheoryforGamers You must be the person that goes to movie theaters and talks loudly throughout it, cause you can't just sit there and enjoy something.

@@MusicTheoryforGamersfor 5 seconds though, at 4:11:54, it was brilliant! Personally id like to see you use it more like that if you're gonna be doing on the fly accompaniments to the tunes.

I'm so happy to see you listen to and talk about this soundtrack. Ys 8 is a really beautiful game with lots of heart. I really hope you listen to more Falcom soundtracks, I feel they're so underrated. Maybe the Trails from Zero one, a personal fav of mine. I'd vote it up if I could. Have a great day Dan!
