The game is coming up against a wall it isn't going to be able to avoid. We are literally running out of kinds of effects and removal. We created banish because too many decks used the graveyard as a resource space, and then we started using the banish zone as a resource so we had to make banish face down, and now we're doing stupid shit like setting monsters in the S/T zones as a form of removal because we're running out of places that function as meaningful removal. "Send from field to grave" was just a weasely way of making cards that destroy without destroying. "Pick" is just a sneaky way of making targeted cards that don't target so we can have our cake and eat it too. We made "discard" and "send from hand to graveyard (literally what discarding is)" so we could have discard effects that arbitrarily bypass discard triggers. The more powercrept the game becomes, the more homogeneous dominant strategies become. The vast majority of decks feel like they do the same thing and have no distinct gameplay identity, and those that do have one are either unplayably bad (like nemurellia) or uniquely grossly toxic (Kash's 9 zone lock). Rarely if ever do you see a deck that does something cool and unique *and* is healthy and interesting to play/play against. So many decks in this game are just "move your archetypal cards from zone to zone and put materials on the board to turn into generic end board extra deck monsters" without meaningful distinguishing characteristics. And it's even worse now that decks can be 15+ non engine. It doesn't even feel like you're playing any particular deck at all going second. You play your handtraps at the choke points, you play your board breaker on your turn, the rest of the game is a borderline formality. Like across *every* deck you play regardless of archetype, most games feel like "did you open droll/nib?" The game will continue to get more and more homogeneous as it gets faster and faster, and what decks can realistically do and still be considered good gets more and more constrained. All of the community things stem from all of this. The game has shed the majority of its casual base because the game has discarded its pick up and playability and its mechanical personality. This is why netdecking is a lot more accepted too. The decks don't feel any different anyway, who cares if you made it or not.

What casual plays in reality are deck like synchron that summon more than 3 quasars because they want to feels like yusei fudo, that's the type of casual you will be dealing with in ocg, glass canon deck that put 10+ hassle if you don't know their gimmick, just like i said before in Asia people don't care about the speed or stuff, the game is always fast since 2001 which you can see in cimoo's ocg history, a literal 2 minute duel otk out of nowhere in 2001, that's even before archetype exist. the game always ends up into big number end the game quickly since 2000 Tcg western side don't experience this because of weird set release, but we all know that yugioh BY DESIGN is a very swingy card game that the entire point is fill your deck with your best good stuff you can find.

Why does the game "need" to keep adding new mechanics though? Just let the game exist and breathe, focus on retraining old cards/ archetypes+ support to bring them up to speed with the stuff thats out there, and just let people focus on actually playing a good game rather than arbitrarily keeping them engaged by endlessly dripfeeding new things. Obviously the thing I mentioned right off the bat would still be "new things" in a sense, but my point is that this game is already so fleshed out and expansive that I legitimately dont understand why would someone even want it to keep evolving in 2024 at breakneck speed, constantly pushing out new archetypes rather than simply being allowed to exist as a game

The problem is ygo sucks now. And konami is not trying to fix it. Noone is going to locals to watch someone play solitaire. That and the fact that you may have to deal with insane people makes it pointless. I mean master duel sucks also nobody wants to pay gems. They couldve easily made a real game with a story and ish and did an in-game edo pro. The fact thats they still short print and do nonsense like that when everyone can see the 25th collection is how they should put out all cards instantly making them accessible and affordable, but no at every turn they try to f the player base, and in return people are just thru. The rise of alternate formats show konami has already lost the game. If konami stopped printing cards the community would take over and make an erernal format that works for everyone...because ir wont be based on money ,it will be based on balance gameplay.

Re: Netdecking, I had a comforting epiphany about it when I started exploring Dinos There are a *lot* of Dino deck profiles online, and all of them quibble about specifics. 3 Petiteranodon, or 1? Is the Scrap engine outdated or a trusty mainstay? Which field spell tech choice will you fetch with Horned Saurus? Sifting through so many conflicting opinions, I realized this is how scientists feel when looking at raw data. There's satisfaction to be had in studying your peers, testing their conclusions, and creating your own slightly tweaked iteration. To repurpose the words of the Rifleman's Creed: This is my deck. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

A lot of questions you asking mi brotato. So dino decks you'd run the 3 babysaurus, 2 petiteranodon. Field spell you typically run lost world, I've seen other deck profiles that run dragonic diagram.

@michaelh.1484 Pretty agreeable stuff. I too am a Scrap loyalist, but I use them for an unconventional play: Despian Luluwalith to go with the Secret Village Of the Spellcasters my Horned Saurus searched. Dino endboards are yet another hotly contested topic. I use the Scraps for Luluwalilith, others use them for Bujinki Amaterasu to recycle Misc. Some duelists call Gigantozowler unplayable, I personally prefer popping him with UCT. Like I said, Dinos are far from "solved." They have lots of combo routes and destinations, which is why it's so fun to see how others are playing them.

One of the many perks of being a gamer/TCG enthusiast and investor into these corporations over the last 10+ years, it feels as though I can never lose. If Konami prints cards fairly, I win from a players standpoint, but if they don’t and greed takes over, people will continue to buy anyway, which in turn benefits Konami which then benefits investors like me via the decently high dividend payouts that I see on the yearly.

Things I dislike. 1. Turns are way too long. 2. Cards recycle themselves and each other way too much. 3: Every single good deck nowadays utilizes the GY way too much. 3: It's less of a turn based game now, and more of a "i'll play in your turn" or chainlink 3 myself on your first normal summon type of game. 4: More than ever, people have become less creative / loss of dueling personality. More and more people just copy/paste decks on MasterDuelMeta etc.

Yes, Yugioh definitely changed a lot. I'm a casual player. Started playing since... Before GX came out (And back then, it seemed a lot of people hated GX). I don't play modern, so I can't talk to much about it, but I do notice more people seem to be frustrated over the card game more often than not. I will say, even though there are problems now, there was still some problems back then. Like, 2004-ish when I would duel with other people in High School. One of the biggest issues was card rulings as we couldn't just pull out cellphones and look up online on how cards worked. People were definitely using banned cards (mostly from not knowing they were banned) though to be fair, people either figured no banned cards or figured just casual play. For now, the best I can say is play for the fun of it. If you aren't having fun with Yugioh, find ways to make it fun again for yourself. Even now I'm making up a Yugioh fan story with it's own new characters, cards, and archetype decks just because 'why not'? Sure, I don't plan on playing modern anytime soon, but I still love Yugioh and have fun with it.

Newer decks and support for popular decks are poorly designed in relation to older archetypes. Take RDA for example. Red Lotus King, Flame Crime, Red Zone, Scarred Dragon Archfiend, Crimson Gaia, the new Resonators and Bone Archfiend are insane. They allow you to get to Crimson Resonator, Red Reign, and Time to stand up way too quickly and consistently, and they are able to get into Synchron territory for how big their boards could potentially get.

It was strange playing an Edison locals that filled up most of the shop's tables while modern was kinda off in the back playing a 3 round tournament. We even got people to get back into the game via Edison and most of them have said that they have no plans on ever touching modern because of how ridiculous it has gotten. While I am happy that more people are finding Edison fun, it's just a band-aid fix to the problem modern Yugioh is facing since Konami makes little to no money on time wizard formats, not to mention it's a snap shot format with a limited unchanging card pool. Crazy pull rates for meta staples, 20+ minute turns, crazy chain links and complex mechanics scare off would be new players and it's a shame. I love Yugioh as the anime and card game been a huge part of my life since I was a kid, but outside of Edison/Goat/Speed Duel formats, I have no idea how to even introduce the game to new players without showing them some outdated or alternative version of the game. On the subject of Netdecking. I think criticism of netdecking had dropped off due to yugioh becoming a more archetype driven game. And archetypes pretty much dictate how a deck is going to be built unless its a massive archetype like Blue Eyes or Heroes.. you would hear the accusations of netdecking alot back in the old days of generic goodstuff decks, and those just don't exist anymore in modern yugioh. Even if a deck isn't a pure archetype build it usual has a 3-9 card engine at least.

They can do the balliest thing possible. Cut the cord. Make all of the current cards "classic" and restart Yugioh. They can start from duelist kingdom and work their way up with old cards like Dark Magician but with effects to be modern but have strict balancing rules that they never cross for balance. Then they can freely release new cards based on old archetypes but instead of them releasing into the trash bin of balance. They can release all of the new cards around the same strength. Basically I'm saying they can use the knowledge of years of Yugioh to make a balanced game. The old cards become classic, meaning you can still play with them and they'd have a charm to them like Pokemon cards but they wouldn't be part of the current format. They'd still have trade value for collectors but wouldn't have reprints. The biggest part of this, they can plan cards 10 years in advance. Meaning they can have 10 years of archetypes be balanced and releasing one after the other. All the cards are new with old faces, so people can still actually play with their favorite cards. The difference being that they will actually be viable. Since they have cards pre-planned and pre-balanced, they can release sneak peek cards in tournament packs. That would boost the tournament scene and make trades popular again.

Yugioh's in a rough spot. It's hard for new people to get into since the game is hard to learn and it's getting harder to find cards. I basically *have* to go to an online retailer to find cards now. The meta also kind of gravitates towards things that don't allow the other player to play the game, which just isn't fun to deal with. Meanwhile, Pokemon runs the TCG shelves. As a yugioh player that tried the pokemon tcg game on gameboy, a big thing I appreciated was that my turn was *actually* my turn instead seeing a response to every play. I don't know if the more modern pokemon tcg is different when it comes to that, but it's easy to see why it's harder to find Yugioh at Walmart.

It feels like they are only interested in dueling if there's a payed event that they can earn OTS packs from and I'm not much of a competitor so I don't really enjoy throwing myself into something that stressful. It makes me wonder if players even like the game anymore or are they only playing it to win more expensive cardboard. However, I do think that rarity collection encouraged trading to take place way more often than before. Changing the vision on how Konami handles every booster set they print moving forward by incorporating the different rarities they introduced in Rarity collection would go a long way. It may make the rarity collection itself feel less special, but nothing has felt as fun or as exciting to open as Rarity collection (for me) since the 2019 Gold Sarc tins, which feels like the only time Konami got the altered rarities right in the mega tin product.

10 years ago, there was more comradory between players. When it came to trading and learning, you had to talk with people at your locals to get the best information. You could get info online, but the best info was gathered in person at locals. I haven't been able to bring a trade binder to locals since I recently got back into the game. I haven't had any cards worth trading, and most people just buy the singles. I now have a binder built and plan on seeing if anyone is interested this weekend.😂

While I now feel old, I miss playing yu gi oh and from everyone I talk to who still plays the power creep and cost of entry is higher than ever. Do you ever see a 2 year rule being out in to help balance or a higher life total coming into effect to help balance play coming in?

Here's the problem I have with basically anything that involves trading (pokemon rpgs, tcg cards, etc.) There are only 2 types of players. The players that have everything and then some (and therefore can only be bribed with stuff the average player would never have, let alone trade if they did) and the average player who only has what they can afford, and won't willingly part with anything worthwhile. Usually the more fortunate player will ask what the other player has to offer just to turn everything down, and sometimes even just give the less fortunate player valuable stuff for nothing because a sensible trade just can't happen under those circumstances. Unless you have an exact trade in mind and know exactly who to go to for said trade it's just a clunky experience

And net decking isn’t looked at negatively anymore because nobody sees value in being original and unique anymore. There’s no originality or uniqueness to even be had either. You get 5 decks to choose from that actually win if you’re lucky and then after that it’s like can you afford it or not. After that all the people that can afford the decks that win talk down on people because they wish things where different. I’d rather be criticized for net decking than get criticized for wishing the game I loved to play at one point was going to get better. It’s a shame

Why this game is soo fuckin' allergic to creating an official lower-power format? With a less intimidating format, new players may learn the game peacefully and be interested in playing the game for a longer time. Older players who are tired of modern BS can have a place for a rest, so they don't quit the game. . "But, New players can just ask to play with weaker decks." You can't expect a beginner to know the crazy level differences in YGO. When all of them are legally playable in only 1 format. . My theory is why Konami only keeps and supports 1 format. They keep the bad deck and too-strong deck in the same format. So, less skilled players can just buy the stronger deck, and feel "more skilled" after beating a player with the weaker deck. Then, those people will always buy the strongest deck to keep their "skill" in the game.

I would love a low power format but as long as Konami is handling it it will never work because their policy of handling the game is, release stronger cards to make money so even if they create a low power format it will become like modern ygo at some point. The only way to create such a format is by the community itself like it was with edison and the other retro formats.

We should get catered the same deal because we are holding up this card game in our countries. Not the OCG, I think it should be fair and everyone could have the same power as everyone else so ban lists could be addressed faster, rather than making it a money grab reprint thing. They are so corrupt than ever now. They pull commons of bon fire and their packs have all kinds of rarities in them. OCG just get better stuff in their packs all together. I think yugioh could use a deck builder system where the player can make notes and publish the deck list for each card. I see decks use tech cards that I have no clue how they work with that engine or seem to be extra. Especially with cards meant to be sent to the graveyard. This individual card. Should be used before this to add that. If this is in the graveyard don't play. Most videos I watch have the perfect sequence rolling with minimal interruptions. Instead of a cards individual usefulness. I think it would give the community a chance to audit older cards in engines and see their potential.

Hey Paul, I would like to hear your thoughts on the direction that Konami seems to be going in terms of how the game is played. You mentioned power creep, and that part of it, but I think Konami wants to semi annually flip the game from “tier zero” to “tier zero”. Kash may not have been tier zero totally, but each of the past few years has had its version of a tier zero format (fire, kash, tear, etc.). I’m starting to think that konami strategically builds in annually both formats of the game using ban lists. Would love to hear your thoughts too!

If the game was actually balanced there wouldn’t be any issues including the second hand market being inflated. When you always have 3 to 5 decks that are the ONLY good decks at a time and a handful of cards that overpower everything else not only does it take away from the fun of the game, but it makes what wins games equal money spent rather than actual strategy. And you don’t “play” these powerful decks they play FOR you once you figure them out, meanwhile the fun of the game is supposed to be deck building and strategy and most people don’t have the choice to make their own deck work in their own unique way and truly strategize and play. We want to build our own decks and have our own play styles like the characters in the show. On top of that everything is way too archetype specific. Archetypes are a cool idea for a theme but how strict they are limits how you can mix things up. There’s a reason why people miss the older formats and it’s because you where more of an actual duelist when you played. The duelist should play and build the deck the deck shouldn’t be pre built and play the duelist

One of my friends netdecks and I always laugh. He has to either copy a deck card for card or ask someone to build a deck for him. He literally isn't capable of building one from scratch. When you netdeck your selling yourself short cutting corners and not taking the time to learn how to construct a deck. Given seeking outside sources to learn how to play is nothing wrong with that. But their is a fine line between the learning curve and ones that only netdecks copying card for card and not finding a formula that critiques to their unique play style.

I've been following your channel (admittedly at a distance) since your colab with Tolarian, so take this as a grain of salt. Nothing I say below should be taken as any more than they are: Observations and questions. I think Konami has a harder row to hoe than WotC (Magic the Gathering) when balancing their game for two reasons. One is that by forgoing a mana or energy system, it becomes harder (though not impossible) to conceptual balance-of-power (and they loose one tool of balancing the game). The second reason is that there is no real limitation of mechanics per deck. When every deck can do every thing, then no deck is unique. I don't think either of these challenges are insurmountable, but I don't know how to... repair YGO without basically nuking the entire state of the game. Initially, the game had several limits on power, but as time has gone on, these limitations have functionally been deleted (despite the rules still 'technically' regulating the game). Let's consider normal summoning. Does anyone normal summon any more? As an outsider, it seems like everyone is just constantly special summoning. The limit of one NS per turn is a great tool to balance the power and speed of the game. Lock the more powerful monsters or effects behind normal summoning. Trap cards can't be activated the turns they're set, an inherent limitation. Why doesn't Konami use that to Give trap cards more powerful abilities than spell cards? Players can't attack on turn 0. Another limitation. YGO has these limitations, it just feels (as an outsider) like Konami has spent the past five (ten? fifteen?) years trying to ignore these rules. I have some ideas (because I get bored easily) on ways to change YGO, but I'm confident that if Konami tried to implement any of them, the player-base would riot. As a Magic player, I'm used to what we call the Standard rotation. Only the most recent card-sets are legal. When a set gets too old, it's gone. For all my complaints against WotC, this is a great strategy for a long-lived game. It greatly reduces the... (not sure of the right term...) playspace? design-space? that the creators have to balance and consider. It also helps manage power-creep. Why buy the new set? The old one isn't legal. Konami's strategy to sell the new sets and cards seems to be to just make the new cards more powerful... which means that they aren't trying to manage power-creep. They are actively pursuing it, and are financially incentivized to do so. I think Konami has some tools that they could use to balance YGO, but they have to manage a community that has a very concrete perception of what YGO IS. That means that if they stray too far from that perception, they risk player push-back. They also have to convince players that the new cards are worth buying, that means they need to be AT LEAST as powerful as current-YGO. Honestly, I'm not sure how Konami can recover...

I just miss Yu-Gi-Oh feeling like Yu-Gi-Oh. The game of today is entirely unrecognisable from the Yu-Gi-Oh I grew up with. And that's not to say I only know Duelist Kingdom era, either. I dropped off around Cyberdark Impact, and the game now is wholly unrecognisable from THAT. Magic the Gathering and Pokemon have both experienced power creep too, but the games have always maintained their identities. Magic and Pokemon still feel like playing old school Magic and Pokemon; Yu-Gi-Oh feels like an entirely different game. My take on this problem is that Yu-Gi-Oh has no mana pool. Magic has mana and Pokemon has energy; Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't have any of this, so there is no way to cap an opponents turn. And this is why power creep has grown to absolutely uncontrollable, insane levels where an opponent's turn can more or less cycle through their entire deck in a single turn...

The emergence of Grift and Hustle culture has definitely ruined the in person experience for yugioh. You can't trade without making sure you're not getting hard scammed or plused on, meanwhile the other person is doing the most to scam or plus off of you. It's definitely harder when it's 2 knowledgeable players but going to locals you see the sharks circle the new players like piranhas always trying to rip them off. On top of that even when you do get in a trade a person might not take it cause the see the 2 or 3$ difference as too big of a loss in the trade, throw ins aren't looked at the same, online prices vs cold cash isn't valued the same from person to person. In my area of metro DC out of 10 shops only 1 does yugioh. The outlook on its players are definitely a factor. As someone that plays all the major TCGs at one point or another Yugioh is definitely the more "sweaty & shadier" playerbase. On top of that the amount of hate when that Trans person won the UK YCS or whatever event it was. Absolutely abhorrent. Kazuki Takahashi was such a progressive and forward thinking person, the amount of toxicity and hate or incel culture that lurks within yugioh would make him turn in his grave.
@SenkaZver
@SenkaZver 2 месяца назад
The problem is more pronounced in Yugioh because Yugioh has a higher focus on competitive format than other TCGs (rather, a higher density of competitive players versus casual players compared to other TCG communities). However, the problem of metagaming the decklists and playstyle is prevalent in all of the TCGs unfortunately. It's a symptom of the internetification of gaming as a whole, and broader gaming culture. That's one reason why I like drafts and sealed, because it breaks the metagaming structure. I don't know if someone can design a game to be anti-meta like that but it's probably a million dollar idea. Problem may be the wrong word, there's nothing wrong with how it is. But it does push certain groups of TCG players who are more casual or care more about experimental deck building more out, which relates to YGO's modern problem with new player retention. But, ironically, it does help tremendously with accessibility since you can jump people in easily.

The game is so powercreep that the few casual left can't enjoy it, Yu-gi-oh need an official casual format with good starter/structure deck tailored for it. Normal peoples don't enjoy watching someone playing solitaire, comboing for 10 minutes and not being able to do anything turn 2 because of it, this is objectively bad game design. Competitives players that think the game is healthy this way are just out of touch with normal peoples and can't be reasoned with.
