As part of the dev team, this was hilarious to watch. Yep, the fact that the game follows the anime to a T gets in the way of its potential, but making it perfectly recreate the anime was the number 1 design goal, so it was unavoidable. I wish we had the time to create a version that solves its issues, but everybody in the team has moved to other proyects or simply lacks the motivation for the humongous amount of work it would require. In any case, I'm glad you got some fun out of it, a lot of work went into it. I really enjoyed watching this video. P.S. Rata was right I think, IIRC you can run 3 offs of commons, but for anything rare or higher you are limited to one-offs (unless you are kaiba with blue-eyes, I think). There are other suggested deck-building limitations, like banning crush card virus. But in the end what matters is that you have fun, that's why there are so many rules that require an agreement.

I decided to do an open lobby tabletop sim yugioh room the other night. A european guy with the username "WesleyFNAF" joined. He proceeded to take the red pen and scribble out all of the monster zones except the center one, and then wrote the word "Stinky" with an arrow pointing to the one remaining monster zone. He told me the new master rule was announced in europe today and it was the "Stinky" zone, and that you could only have one monster. However you could summon monsters into the other zones if they were the same monster as the one in the Stinky zone. He then proceeded to Fishborg Blaster FTK me completely ignoring those rules (and the banlist).

Oh, and btw, trap cards are of MANDATORY activation. If the trigger condition is met, you MUST activate it, like it or not ("you activated my trap card!"). That mirror force moment would have been even more insane. Theorically, that allows for stuff like attacking with a weak monster to bait the mirror force. It is, also, another situation of "you have to trust your opponent, if you catch them lying they lose the duel"

Props to the dev team for trying to make a Duelist Kingdom rules that can kind of make sense. I had always assumed that a Duelist Kingdom style game would have to involve bullshitting a judge who has never played Yu-Gi-Oh in order to make a play, with the main rule being you can't tell the judge "That's not how that works!" So if the Judge buys that your opponent can fuse their Undead monster to your Living one to weaken it to death, you can't say "There's no mechanic for that", but you can say "Well fine, but my monster has 3 heads, so you have to kill it three times for it to count!"

I think the problem with this is that it follows events in the anime. Duel Monsters in Duelist Kingdom feels improvisational. It feels like cards don’t really have set rules, that they provide a theatre of the mind-esque framework to set card battles against. Theoretically, every card fusion would produce a unique result not limited to what was printed for the extra deck, it would make many cards not extremely situational, rather the result of the sandbox provided by the game bearing fruit in the form of specific monster fusion cards. I think Duel Monsters would only work as a fully digital card game, one that would allow for the flexibility and creativity that was seen in the show. There should be a ton of cards that don’t show up in the anime, but are very much in the spirit of the anime. YuGiOh duels always felt more like the fight between Dream and that one demon in the beginning of Sandman, where it’s more of a freestyling rap battle where creativity and reasoning will win the fight. Take Time Wizard for example, to have a card advance chronologically has so many interpretations, insects go through metamorphosis faster, young warriors gain age and experience, eggs hatch, Wizards grow wiser, but the longer the Time Wizard is on the field, that progression turns into entropy as age gives less and less experience and turns into a suffocating weight. There are so many potential cards that can be born from this one interaction that it would be infeasible to try and create a card for every possible variation, which is why most games would manifest the effects as tokens and counters, but Duel Monsters has the art and effect of monsters completely change when interfacing with this one card. If the extra deck contained more than fusion monsters, if it held card interactions, it would be like that one comically large deck that two people had to carry. I mean, this is still really cool and impressive and I’m asking for something completely different from what the design goal was.

Honestly, the fact that someone actually created an entire ruleset to try an explain the batsh!t insanity that was happening in Duelist Kingdom is commendable in of itself

As a magic player, watching this made it feel like I was learning Yu-Gi-Oh for the first time again. I must agree that Surprise attack is deeply upsetting. Also, Pegasus getting his ass handed to him by his goon who is specifically trying to get into a lower tax bracket despite that not being how that works fucking killed me, that whole interaction was comic gold.

Really like the direction that you are taking the channel. I find you really funny, it also helps that you don't have the usall Yugioh creator humor. Keep it up and Happy Holidays.

Fat ghost kaiba beat yugi(probably with his second blue eyes because it didn't get infected by the real kaiba fast enough) and since i think i heard he killed 3 people to get to pegasus he killed yugi/yami,tristan,and mokuba. Tea,joey and bakura escaped. Fat ghost kaiba decides he deserves to be paid less because he didn't get them all but pegasus instead gave him more. So he's gonna make pegasus pay him less Tea ended up finding mai while looking for joey and yami bakura challenged tea to a duel, mai giving her part of her deck and bakura taking paniks deck for his own. Joey and bonz is just joey and bonz the anime duel And finally at the very very other edge of the island away from the plot is weevil and rex having their lovers spat.

The talk about splashing Character A with Character B really got me thinking: What if you designed 10-15 card packages themed around a specific character or archetype, and then put them all in a box, and each player picks out two and mashes the decks together? Turn it into a boxed game night experience like Smash Up or JumpStart. I love games like that, and I think if you slim down the deck sizes to 20-30 cards, this could make for a great "let's pull out some premade decks and have some games" night. And with only 10-15 cards in each package it shouldn't be too hard to get the essence of a theme while leaving room for other packages to fill it out.

I’d actually love to see more content on this. Sure it’s complicated and weird but so is Yu-Gi-Oh! in general. I wonder if you guys should use Excel or Google Sheets to keep track of Attack bonuses and at the same time you could use it to set up the Labyrinth for grid duels.

I await the revised rulesets for the Battle City, there was another season of DM?, and the GX era. I know 5D's and later Anime also don't 100% follow the rules, but at least they figured out you can't normal summon in face up defense by that point.

Archetype archive hieratics. I think some "good" archetypes can also be fun to watch. I stopped playing yugioh since pendulums, but its still fun to watch these archetype videos.+ I want to see how hieratics compare to modern yugioh decks
