A humanist living in a apartheid system...interesting

We could have avoided all of this by developing a science of mind centuries ago, as we should have. Our last chance was in the 1960s, but we killed it with the killing off of psychedelic drug research. Now, we have to develop a science of mind and heart at the same time as we are racing towards disaster without one. Which trend will reach the finish line first?

His definition of humanism here is basically his definition of liberalism at Google. Humanism = liberalism ? Liberalism is a branch of humanism, the ideology of human-centredness. Humanism is against theocracy.

I agree that he more often than not repeats his message in his lectures and interviews. You should accept that he needs to spread the story he's created as often as possible to as many people as possible. Your repeated viewing of generally the same story may become boring for you, but it doesn't detract from the importance of the story.

Truth people find it hard to take, it cannot be different because one thinks he is different. If someone disagrees then one has to give his arguments, not just comment which is the easiest. How many books one has read in the last one year. Discipline is difficult.

Jacob, is he responsible for the policies of his government and the worst people in his country? Are you responsible in the same way? Is your nation without (*ahem) blemishes? I doubt it, no nation has a perfect record. Does this mean you are accountable? Or perhaps is he one of the good ones, a good example for his fellow citizens to learn from? He certainly seems to be. Are you?

That would suggest you are confident that your decisions are based on your own free will. That you've observed the facts and based your decision on logic. Ironically, as Yuval Noah Harari states, the belief that you are not being manipulated makes you the most easy to manipulate. And this is evident when it comes to voters on the right. For example (and I'm not pointing to you specifically, but to the right in general)... the disbelief in climate change. The idea that 97-99 percent of experts in that field are part of a conspiracy or perpetuating a lie for money... while "experts" funded by the oil and gas industry (who have by far the most to lose) are a better authority to listen to. Furthermore... the fact that climate change... a purely scientific discussion, has actually been woven into the fabric of political ideology is clear evidence of manipulation. I use that example because that is clearly one issue the right bases their decisions on a feeling, on emotion... rather than facts. The same can be said about economics... in which Yuval Noah Harari eludes to. Laissez faire economics which is generally associated with the right, is based on the idea of free will and the customer is always right. But we know this is not true. Logic cannot balance the market and create the most efficient, fair and productive economy... because people don't base their decisions on sound logic. The same can be applied to supply side trickle down ideology... which has also been proven wrong. Because it's foundation is built on the belief that people will always make the right decision. But we don't, not you... not I. In fact more often than not, we make poor decisions based on emotion and justify it with logic. You can go down the list of every issue. Another example... you cannot claim to base your decision on facts if your entire ideology begins with the belief in a book that is thousands of years old and has been rewritten, translated and interpreted countless times. As much as someone may want it to be a fact, it is anything but "factual". However... it has been the foundation of logic that elects a man who is a known adulterer and liar, a man who not only has decades of ties to Russia, but who's entire inner circle is being indicted, convicted and pleading guilty to crimes associated with Russia and Russia's interference in their election. A person who can base their decisions on facts would see this clearly... And the left is guilty too. Proof that these ideologies are manufactured (and as Yuval Noah Harari says... people are being hacked) is that I can pick any one of a dozen issues, ask your opinion on it, and with a high degree of accuracy tell you your opinion on the other 11. And you could do the same to me. That packaging of realities is a manipulation of facts... and the very fact you're confident in your ability to interpret those facts and that your decisions are correct because they're based on them... makes you very easy to manipulate, because you're not even aware it is happening to you.

Yes both right and left make decisions on emotion. Though many conservatives agree to the idea of climate change but disagree as to what the long term consequences are going to be and what the best course of action is with respect to how to deal with potential impacts rising temperatures will have. People such Yuval would readily tell you that there no differences between average IQ among races but sadly geneticist would disagree but the left has made the study of race and IQ completely taboo. The question is how can we overcome these biases that both sides possess with respect to science and facts.

This is a well stated defense of the volatility of the masses in relation to their vulnerability to manipulation. However, their is one critical element either you or I missed. That is the fact that simply because one is (over) confidant does not necessarily mean they are easier to manipulate IF, as noted above, they are "1) ....willing to continuously have their map of reality challenged so that they may refine it and DO + " 2) [know] how to make rational arguments and how to spot fallacious arguments. [Although, admittedly, while] learning emotional control through meditation and the like will help with the first aspect, [....]the internalised confidence required to not get defensive of ones map may be a bit trickier." @@wonmoreminute
