Z Review - ZMF Atticus [Day 4] 

No one in history has called the Atticus neutral

I am a happy owner of the Atticus and I wanted to add a personal note on pads. If you use the ZMF Suede (which is think that is what Z is using in this video). It does indeed sound rather neutral. Very even response surprisingly. If you use the stock Ori pads you get a wider (slightly worse imaging) and more fun sound signature, which too my tastes is the best for musical enjoyment and to bring the best character of the Atticus. The stock Ori pads sounds amazing to my ears and I'd absolutely recommend getting those pads even if you choose to get another pad as well. These headphones sound wonderfully musical with amazing timbre stock. - Ori suede pads even out the mid bass, extend the treble, and reduce the upper mids slightly creating a relatively neutral response with and enjoyable signature.

Not looking for headphones at the moment, but I still enjoy your reviews.

Zeos says in the video that Aeolus is a open back version of Atticus, but it should be noted that the reason is because both headphones use the same driver.

GODAMN ZEOS!! you should've listened to those using the Ori pads. They are NOT flat by default. Btw still love your videos lol

Did you ever try them with the stock pads? Did you find they assumed more of the qualities you loved from the aeolus when you did, or did they still feel very neutral??

Interesting take on the Atticus. In Head-Fi community these go as coloured (mid-)bass monsters and you say these are DT1990-like closed back studio monitors. I wonder if the micro-suede pads made you say this. They are probably more bassy with the stock leather pads... Anyway, it does put into perspective your evaluation of Auteur/Aeolus bass. (I like my bass.) :)

Hmmm I wouldn't say they're flat compared to my LCD2 and my hd6xx. I use mine for electronic music primarily. The imaging is incredible though. Ive been using them with my wa7 lately. Oh and I have the ori pads sooooo we're having different experiences I guess.

DT 1990 sound demo?

This is my all time favorite closed back. I have mine in Padauk Wood with leather ori pads. My lord these things are majestic. I sold my TH-900 after buying these. Atticus and Auteur are just magical. Zach is a motherfucking sorcerer. BTW, the mid bass is rolled off when using Suede pads with these. The leather ori's with these accentuate the bass more and give the Atticus a much more fun and balanced sound. It's a shame you didn't get to listen to them with those pads.

Atticus, with the Ori pads, are among my all-time favorite headphones. I take them to work with me every day and drive them from the DX200 with AMP8. Sweet fuck! They are glorious.

On the zmf website it says this is their warmest headphone 😂

Don't listen to him. Think of these as a closed back super HD650 with mid bass boost interestingly though they sound very open and spacious for a closed back. If you like HD650/600 tonality and want something on the warmer side of neutral these are your beast. They are forgiving for bad recordings too.

Shame about the weight. I hope the Eikon's do better tomorrow.

Wait..aren't these considered too 'mid-bassy' to be accurate monitors? Everyone I've talked to says Atticus is too 'thick' in the bass. Maybe your amp and/or dac is a good match? I've heard they change more than the other ZMF's with different systems/gear.

So you can say that the relationship between the Atticus and the Aeolus is the same as the relationship between the Shure 1540s and the 1840s?
