Zdeno Chara...The Toughest Guy In NHL History?? 

Big Z has done so much for our community here in New England. I'll cherish bringing my grandfather to meet him.

McCabe being rag dolled will always be my #1 hilight of Chara. And his reach, man was he lanky! But so fit.

My personal favorite modern era player Chara will always be a Legend. Man played with a broken jaw a true warrior of the sport.

I was very fortunate to watch all (well most of) of Chara's junior career when I grew up in Prince George when he was a member of the WHL Cougars. In the nineties we saw the likes of Jerome Iginla and the Kamloops blazers And Marian Hossa and the Portland Winter hawks rolling into town it was an incredible time. At that time our cougar squad was pretty competitive and Chara fought very frequently and would absolutely destroy everyone he faced. His reach was his main advantage. It was never a contest. Those were great days and I have always followed Chara's career and I'm a Mega fan. All the best to him.

Chara was never a goon. All the rest were goons.

And his most pres·tig·ious (did that for Biz) accomplishment was chin up champ for Boston's training camp. Hes gotta be 265 and smoking kids at 190 in chin ups. A fierce competitor. Gonna miss his physical presence out there.

Toughest guy was Probert by far. Toughest guy with other talents- Chara

chara in my opinion did more for the islanders off the ice than on the ice. Dobson had a breakout 52 point season. Definitely showed the young guns how its done. Still logged 20 mins a night on the islanders in his last season. The dude is a machine. Big props to big z, glad I got to see him on the island

You meant, “tallest Captain in NHL history.” Chara wasn’t the toughest in his era… Georges Edy Laraque was.

No absolutely not even close . Chara was scared to fight guys who could throw and if he did he would knock them down . Wouldn’t fight Boogard . Wouldn’t fight Laraque . Wouldn’t fight John Scott. The toughest players wouldn’t back down from any fight even though Chara was more effective and played bigger roles than guys like this .

Definitely hall of famer and amazing player But some of those 70s/80s/90s crazy goons were way tougher

Peter Worrell use to beat the breaks off of chara….. a lot. He was incredibly tough for how skilled he was but he’s not even top 10

Chara is no where near the toughest player ever in the NHL. He was a freak in terms of size and strength. I heard about the chin ups and that is amazing at his size. Think he pulled off something like 43. And Whitney is full of sh it. Ya he fought Laraque twice in one game and he lasted about 5 seconds because he had bad balance compared to the guys who were true HW fighters. Scott Parker dropped him , Chris Simon beat him once for sure. Chara had a reputation of jumping guys or at least trying to get a head start. He jumped Cairins in a scrum and once Cairins gathered himself Chara fell way to easy. Guys like Brashear , Laraque, Simon, Parker, Cairins , Macintyre , Boogaard , McGrattan , Godard were much more equipped with the gloves off than Chara. And of course Probert, Wilson, Kocur could beat anyone of these guys as well. This is in no way trying to downplay Chara who is a hall of fame player and great man but imo not even close to the toughest player ever in the NHL.

Did he ever fight boogaard? I remember having season tickets to the wild and the times the excel energy center was loudest was during the playoffs in 2007 and when boogaard fought.

Sometimes you see teams throw a C on a guy just because they like have to have a captain I guess but you can tell the guys not really a true leader, Chara on the other hand was a true captain no doubt about it he embodied being what a captain of a hockey team was, That's captain right there.

This guy didn’t get an opportunity in the NHL because he worked hard, it’s because of his height. Don’t act like if he was 6’3 he would have made it out of the AHL.

Scott Parker was thumping him early on in his pro career. Scariest people to fight in history had to be Joey Kocur and Dave Brown.

Not the toughest and his fellow countryman Hossa did more to change a franchise as a free agent.

Nothing against Chara..but Bob Probert would have ruined his career. Kocur would have broke him. Kordic may have killed him.

Toughest guy has nothing to do with best fighter. If you want to look at toughest guys you have to look at guys like Chris Chelios, Borja Salming who was as tough as they come and possibly may be the toughest of all time. His face alone tells that story. Bobby Baun, Bobby Orr himself his toughness is underrated due to his superior skill. I don’t think we’ll ever see this kind of toughness in todays game.
