In this short video I go over some of the differences between Zello radios or Internet POC radios and regular ham radios, and GMRS radios, and I respond to the claim that a Zello radio or an Internet-Radio is not a "real radio".

'Some People' lurk in the back of the auditorium with a blank picket sign and magic markers just waiting for you to say something they can get offended about. I put in the extra effort, which is why I'm Randy's favorite viewer :D

My first encounter with "some people" was over 200 years ago when I delivered the newspaper to Thomas Edison's house. Some people hung around outside his house and said radio would never catch on, and their carrier pigeons were by far the best means of long distance communications. But of course you had to pass the test to use them legally.

Coming from someone not involved in the ham community, I think network radios, assuming they have a SIM slot, can be extremely useful. Think of industries such as logistics, construction, etc. Back in the day, Nextel was very popular with those folks, and, had Sprint not destroyed it, I think it still would be. In fact, in the Southeast, we still have Southern Linc. A network radio can basically do the same thing, with the advantage of you being able to use whichever wireless carrier works best in your area. Pop in a SIM, sign into Zello, and hand it to an employee.

I'm actually curious about these kinds of radios from an off grid standpoint because you could probably configure a local server, and 2.4ghz wifi propagates well with directional antennas. It would open up some interesting possibilities assuming they could be configured to use in an offline scenario. As an IT nerd, I know much more about wifi than I would about GMRS, FRS, MURS, 2M, 70CM, etc. Getting the bits in and out to show you things you expect from a smart phone but in a purpose built ruggedized wifi device that fits in a single hand is a niche I can appreciate.

Internet radio has become increasingly common for companies that need to communicate sensitive information (e.g. healthcare companies) because they can have their employees get the phone app and pay a moderate service fee. Due to the sensitive information, to use a standalone radio system, they would need to get more expensive digital voice radios. Plus, that assumes they are able to get a business radio license to be allowed to transmit. There are situations where it makes sense, although "some people" can never seem to figure out that different people sometimes have different situations.

What is fantastic is that those who are saying that these aren't radios are almost certainly communicating with a personal electronic device utilizing a wifi radio. If the internet thing is bugging you, there are lots of PTT apps that do not require an internet connection, but they won't work on the device that is shown in this video.

I have used Zello before, seemed to work ok if you can tolerate the delay. When you hold the PTT it records you and only transmits when you let go. Doesn't work great for certain things like spotting someone backing a trailer. What is the advantage of using an internet radio over just using the Zello app on your phone?
@billelkins994
@billelkins994 Год назад
In some states you can use a "radio" while driving, but you must never touch a cellphone. The radio also does what you program it to do. Apps are voluntary. I place radios in my aging relatives home. Checking on them is quick and to the point. And vice-versa. I am aging as well.
@magooracing
@magooracing Год назад
We tried using Zello to communicate while auto racing in endurance races. Most of the time communicating was nearly instant, but sometimes the delay was minutes. Not good when the driver says he’s pitting next lap and the crew doesn’t get the message til after he shows up in the pit stall. So since it was not 100% reliable we went with GMRS radios.
@RKingis

Sound output. Cellphones are great if it's next to your head, and it's relatively quiet. Most POC devices are loud, and designed so you psychologically think it's a radio.
@Bootyhunter1971
@Bootyhunter1971 7 месяцев назад
Thats not true at all. The comms are real time, not recorded. There is a delay at the beginning of the transmission of like 1 second before you can start talking, but the other person hears you as you speak then when you let go of the ptt they have the same 1 second delay before they transmit. The echo channel on zello will record your audio so you can hear how you sound, everything else is real time.

Well, I thought this topic was right up your street -- a great choice for your loyal viewers, like me. Radios are about communication at a distance ... that's all 99.9% of people care about. I like all the little ins and outs, but at the end of the day, it's just about long-distance communication without wires or strings. You gave a great intro to this different way of communicating at a distance with the internet POC radios (one of your best vids), but these radios will never be able to contact Voyager, in deep space. Why does that matter, you ask? It doesn't, of course, which is exactly your point! (Sad Ham self-glazes, and sticks cloves into his skin) You use the right radio for the right case of communicating at a distance. Duh. That's it. "Purists" have their place, I suppose -- I'll think up what it is in a moment -- but knowing different ways to communicate at a distance, like GMRS, about which I knew zilch until I happened across one of your videos, just means the opportunity to make smart choices for a given set of circumstances and conditions (including fatness or thinness of the wallet). Zello is just another option to evaluate. I will admit, however, that sometimes I am "some people," just never on your channel because I don't want my 'nads blow-torched off. Also I'm in therapy. Bottom line: you are Mr. Practical, and Mssrs. Hypothetical, Theoretical, and Wannabe simply aren't going to be happy watching your funny videos. After all, you might teach them something, and that would destroy their self-centered worldviews in which they ALWAYS know more than anyone else.

I love how alot of "some people" just Looooove DMR but poo poo network radio, when it is the exact same thing with just more convulusion. Programming a DMR radio is not for the faint of heart, I did it and enjoyed it for awhile but then network radios came along and does the same thing a whole lot better and easier, plus I can set up my own private zello channel and just talk to the folks I want to talk too. The sad hams, errr "some people" are big mad because Zello is better than their expensive DMR radio. 😂
