The ZEN Samurai is a premium commuter, touring capable, electric bike with Bosch Gen 4 Speed motor capable of 28mph. Offers clean quiet Gates Carbon belt drive, powerful Magura hydraulic disc brakes, and Enviolo continuously variable transmission. Comes stock with a Bosch PowerTube 500 battery pack and 4 amp fast charger. Optional PowerPack 500 doubles range while keeping weight low and center. Four frame sizes, adjustable angle stem, and Ergon touch points ensure comfort. Custom suspension seat post pairs with Manitou air suspension to offer comfort at speed and over long distances. Included SKS fenders, sturdy rear rack, and optimally positioned light offer safety and utility. Weighs a bit more because it comes feature-complete. Yeah! It was exciting to see this one. I like the Bosch Gen 4 system and dual battery setup a lot. Gates Carbon belt and different IGH options really make it unique :D

Wow, the premium model with the Rohloff gear hub is my dream setup. The dual battery is awesome. Wish they hold even more capacity though. Would like to see more specifications of the bicycle and for the different sizes of each model. Add more water bottle mount for longer trip.

I have a Gazelle C380+ with the enviolo hub and this just bike would be, on my list as a replacement when I come to change bikes over the next couple of years.

Good choice on the C380+, I think Gazelle makes nice products! Seeing this one from ZEN got me excited because they combine many of the new or cool options and really let you customize it the way you want.

Thanks for the quick ride test. The Zen brand would have been a contender if I hadn't already purchased 2 ebikes with similar setups. I prefer pedalac over throttle ebikes as I ride for exercise and recreation more than pure transportation. Court, I know you are familiar with my Riese & Muller Delite GX rohloff 14 but you need to check out the Serial 1 Rush ebikes. I have the Harley Davidson designed Rush City Speed and it has the Brose mid-drive along with the Inviolo AutomatiQ belt drive. It is priced very competitively with the Zen bikes and has some advantages I think you might enjoy.

Sweet! The Rush City Speed looks awesome, I’d love to check it out and am glad to hear you’re enjoying it Robert! You’re up to speed on things and I appreciate the suggestions a lot!

I do like the clean, unfussy design of the bike, but I would wonder if it might be a better option, for the price, to consider a Tern model. I think the hauling capability of the HSD/GSD lines offer more potential.

The Tern electric bikes are awesome! Very unique, well thought out, they look awesome too. I've covered most of the models here for anyone who is new to the brand electricbikereview.com/brand/tern/

This one is actually pretty affordable given the drive system, stock components, multiple frames and colors, and all of the possible upgrades like dual battery. I know it's still very expensive... but I'm not sure you can find an equivalent for less. Here's a list of some more affordable ebikes that could be worth checking out electricbikereview.com/category/affordable/

Seems to have a lot of high points. Like the simplicity of the drive train. Plug and play for those with cash.

Good review & I just ordered a pair of Schwalbe super Moto x 26x2.40 e-bike tires & wanted to know your opinion on those tires when it comes to traction on dirt or water & how well the tires handle for weight & overall performance?
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 2 года назад
Hi Clark! I like the Schwalbe tires in general, and the Super Moto-X have enough tread and width that they seem to perform well on gravel and dirt. They spun out just a bit on this steep hill in the wet grass, but I was actually very impressed with how they performed. Hopefully they perform well for you too, they are an excellent "all around" tire that's more efficient and quiet than knobby mountain bike tires.

"Honeywell" ebikes are yet another cheap Chinese product branded or "licensed" with an American name. Don't expect quality or longevity

DOES THIS EBIKE CHECK ALL THE BOXES? Love the base hardtail Mountain bike frame that is converted into an all around trail/road ebike. High end components. Adjustable stem, belt drive, option for another battery for touring, seat post and front suspension. Great except for one big omission.... NO THROTTLE. Europe is stuck in the mud with the no throttle policy. A Bosch middrive with a throttle? WOW
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 2 года назад
Throttle can be a nice option, but it's not offered by Bosch or any of the big mid-drive manufacturers at this time. I think they are more strictly adhering to the Class 1, 2, and 3 legislation and playing to the strengths of efficiency and power that a mid-drive can offer vs. hub motors. Yes, there are some throttle mid-drives, but there are questions about chain/belt wear and how it might impact the gearing and motor if a rider is pushing it while in a very high gear. That's my take :)

What is your inseam? How does the medium Premium model (red) fit you?
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 2 года назад
Hi Douglas, sorry for the slow reply! I have a 30.5" inseam and the medium felt good. The body position is more relaxed upright than aggressive, but the adjustable angle stem provides lots of options. I feel like the Large would also fit me, but I tend to go for medium most of the time :)

Very nice bike but no throttle?
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 2 года назад
You are correct. None of the major mid drives like Bosch, Brose, Shimano, Yamaha, or MAHLE offer throttle. Bafang and Daly do though. Check out EVELO and DÖST for something comparable with a throttle :)

It will be nice once electric bikes and the green movement takes greater hold and governments finally respond to the dire facts of climate change and things like ebikes come down in price and become a more affordable transportation choice, affordable at least for one living by a lower budget means like myself. My dream is the Riese and Muller GT cargo bike... but over $11,000. It's only my amateur view, but I think once ebikes are manufactured in much greater quantity the price will come down. Your government and mine still awards billions beyond what the Pentagon asks for every year, or for that matter it's probably the same situation in many countries. I wonder how far just one billion of that would go to subsidize the cost of ebikes.

Freaking nutty pricing. Rather buy a harley.
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 2 года назад
Yeah, it's just a different thing. The Harley requires insurance and gas. Yes, it can do a lot more in terms of speed and range... but you can't ride it on a bike trail or store it inside (unless you have an awesome house!). This ZEN ebike is actually pretty affordable given the drive system, stock components, multiple frames and colors, and all of the possible upgrades like dual battery. I know it still seems like a lot... but I'm not sure you can find an equivalent for less in the market right now.

What’s with the excessive hand action? Is that part of the “enhanced” experience? The bike: Meh. Overpriced for as equipped components. New company. Mail order only. Better value out there.
