The tapeless way of wrapping presents is exactly how you wrap surgical packs (at least in veterinary medicine) haha. Excited to do that for the secret Santa at work!

Thrift shops are loaded with fabrics rolls and fabric scraps. That’s what I use and I also use it as an excuse to collect beautiful vintage fabrics.

This is totally unrelated but it reminded me of something that to me is like the pinnacle of Anti-Haul! I'm really hoping that over in the U.S. this isn't a thing, but here in the UK I've seen it becoming more popular each year when Christmas comes around. It's called something along the lines of Reindeer or Santa dust and it's basically a fistful of glitter in a little pouch that people buy for like £1 (about $1.20). Sometimes it's a mix of glitter and sand, but glitter is always the main component. It's most often bought my families/mums and dads who buy it for their kids to throw outside into their garden as a way to try and attract Santa to your house on the night of Christmas Eve. Yep, that's right, people will spend money on tiny bits of plastic to literally throw outside into our environment in a bid to attract a fictional man from performing his fictional job. It literally blows my mind! Thousands upon thousands of people throwing fistfuls of micro-plastics into our soils and waterways without a second thought. I could talk about how much I hate this new product/tradition/activity for hours. Anti-Hauled forever. There are even schools that partake in it. Cannot explain how much it frustrates me! Anyways, great video as always, Shelbi! Will definitely be using these suggestions to wrap my gifts year in and year out.

Ulg I haven't seen that how ridiculous, it's about as bad as the "nothing" gift that was popular a few years ago that was just empty plastic packages with a cardboard label that said "the gift of nothing" or something like that inside. Literally the one part of the gift no one likes to deal with after Christmas, it's not even that funny.Gag gifts drive me absolutely up the wall it's literately plastic junk no one wants that at best provides maybe a minute of entertainment before being tossed in a junk drawer or at best passed around each Christmas to clutter a new home.

I’ve seen a few shops in the US sell something similar called “reindeer food”. They are also tubes with glitter. Parents could easily use sugar sprinkles that biodegrade or carrots. I do not like this trend at all!
@ginagarcia1430

It’s definitely a thing in the US. Obviously I understand how bad it is for our planet now but as a kid, I thought it was so magical. I will definitely do something similar for my kids but with biodegradable ingredients! 😊

What I've been doing the last couple of years is saving gift bags and reusing them for gifts during the holiday season & birthdays. I keep the tissue paper to re-use again as well. I rarely ever have to buy supplies for wrapping presents now.

My family has always done that we just keep passing the bags around every year. Our mentality has always been why waste money on new wrapping materials when you could spend that extra money on a great gift or some great snacks for the party instead?

I always use brown bags or brown paper, the use a potato stamp and paint to decorate it. Or home make cloth bag that can be reused to carry loose fruit and veg.

I use cardboard boxes which I cover in paper from old calendars or newspapers or posters or whatever. I glue the paper to the box with wallpaper paste. Wallpaper paste is a sustainable vegetable product which is sold as a powder in a cardboard box (in Germany). You mix it with water and apply it with a brush. You can store the glue in an airtight container and use it whenever you want to glue something. It is safe for children. In Germany kids use this in elementary school for their craft projects all the time. Sometimes I tie a fabric ribbon around the box. We always reuse those boxes and ribbons.

Many years ago, I purchased several cloth gift bags at a craft show. They were all closed with attractive cording - you'd pull the ends at each side and the top would squeeze shut. Those ties were made with pretty cording, fringe, and sometimes beads. Attached to the cording was a long tag that was used to write the giver, the occasion, and the year. So recipients could use it and keep the gift bag going - and the fabrics used were also beautiful so these were definitely something others would enjoy passing along. I like to use kitchen tea towels for gift wrap, too. I haven't made these, but I've seen small gift boxes made from greeting cards - neat idea! One more - use paper tubes and wrap them like "poppers", with a little fringe at each end.

We got a big santa sack last year and we are putting the presents in them this year unwrapped. Putting the sack out the night before christmas and letting them go in without looking and grabbing their present. Thanks for the ideas I love the toilet roll flowers and tape-less wrapping. You can cut up ratty old cloths into strips as well to make some cute pom poms, or if you or someone you know sews it's a good way to use scraps.Or someone who knits always ends up with scraps. I made a whole bunch of origami stars from scrap paper to use on gifts this year. I still get a lot of bills in the mail, even though I've tried to go paperless they still send me paper all the time, and the privacy envelopes have some really pretty patterns inside. I wish at the very least they wouldn't always send the envelopes with the stupid plastic window it's such a pet peeve of mine.
@cdr72916
@cdr72916 5 лет назад
It's almost exactly the way you wrapped the first small box anyway, but if you look up how to wrap a veterinary surgery pack using the self-closing envelope method, that is a great way to learn how to wrap without tape. The videos will show tape being placed on the pack, but that is just indicator tape that is necessary to be able to tell whether the pack has been brought to the correct temperature for sterilization, which obviously isnt necessary for gifts :)

Im going to use some of these suggestions this year! But i rarely do need new ways to wrap gifts as i try to save all of the wrapping paper after my family’s opened the gifts on christmas and reuse it throughout the year and through the new holiday season. We’ve also always saved gift bags at home or any nice/sturdy looking bags from shops etc. and tissue paper. Ik they’re plastic/paper and they get thrown out eventually but at least we don’t buy new ones.

I would be careful with not taping boxes if you're mailing them, sorting offices hire a lot of people quickly and theres often one or two that will be happy to rummage in your things if the box is easily openable. I'm trying to think of what might be a good suggstion for sealing a mialing box, does gum strip or paper tape (like what amazon uses) plastic free? I think my favourite present you decorated was the one with the loo roll tubes it looked so vintage and 50's!

Overlap and tuck in the sides of the box as shown, then wrap in brown paper you've saved through the year. I get large sheets in stationery orders at work, used as filler in their boxes. In the past parcels were then tied up with string but I guess automated sorting probably makes this inadvisable.

What about a wax seal?? You drip a big of wax on the opening and then push down with a stamp before the wax hardens to create a pretty seal. If you get compostable wax it would be cute and it would seal the present properly

These are some really great ideas. My parents used to wrap our gifts in newspaper too. The paper on your toilet paper is much prettier than the one I buy. I love the idea of wrapping with cloth, but I wonder how that would be for the budget. There is a zero waste store in my city, which sells cloth that was designed specifically for wrapping presents. If I were to go that route, I would like to keep the cloth to reuse, but it seems rude to do so if it was wrapping a gift. (This cloth isn't crazy expensive, but not something I would like to give away every single time.) Otherwise, I would put gifts in jars, or reusable containers or bags. Or, just don't bother wrapping or putting it in anything.

You can get twine at hardware stores, dollar stores (although I generally avoid these for obvious environmental and ethical reasons) or the baking, craft, or gardening sections of almost any store, it's actually really easy to come by. I used to have mounds of all weights of rope and twine as a kid when I went through a basket weaving phase ha ha. Which I just realized would be another great way to give gifts you can weave baskets from all kinds of natural materials, got me thinking now!

Guys I'm so mad my school started recycling but they're only recycling paper, not plastic AND they're laminating their dozens of recycling signs in plastic.. 😓

Ugh, that's so lame. Do you have a student council?

@@Shelbizleee yes, I wonder if they organized it

You could organize and ask to talk to the school board if there are other students who feel similar to you, you have a better chance if you organize and ask for help from school administration. Come armed with facts about the importance of recycling and you have a better chance. Luck favors the prepared.

Do your homework going into it. Follow the money. If you go to a public school, those records and contracts are a matter of public record. Get to know someone in the school treasurer's office. Find how much your school pays for regular trash disposal. If recycling is likely to reduce the amount paid for disposal of waste, you are more likely to be successful. Recycling may or may not make the amount paid to get rid if the waste your school produces less expensive for the school. (It depends on what services are available in the area you live in) This MIGHT help convince administration to act (more on that later)... Most of all, do not be discouraged if this takes a while, anything worth doing is worth struggling for. Do not feel like a failure if it doesn't go smoothly the first time. The challenges and struggles ARE the lesson, and every time you try something that doesn't work there will be a new chance to move forward. We learn more from failing than we do from succeeding. Also, you know that (eventually) we as a society will realize that our obsession with single use disposable throw away things is not healthy for us, the planet, or our economy. Your work on this will be successful eventually, so don't give up even when the going gets tough. 😁

Washi tape is a good alternative to plastic tape since it is biodegradable.

I save the paper from Who Gives a Crap also to wrap gifts. My family thinks it is funny.
