ZF8HP75 Teardown

This Transmission was shipped to me from a shop in Chicago, with a 3-4 flare and a delay in reverse, the common clutch for the problem is the D clutch, as i tear down the unit i air check it and find nothing applying at the D clutch port. I also had to get parts from Germany to rebuild this trans, most if not all parts are not available in the states. Valvebody video for this unit next week. I was able to save about $5000 by watching your videos on a Rover sport Transmission! Got it back in the car this week, and it shifts like glass!! Thanks Gary! I'm confident in rebuilding another one. Hope you enjoyed the gift card I sent.

Slown, it feels good to rebuild your own transmission doesn't? Especially for the first time ever!! I rebuilt the 5R110 behind my 6.0 powerstroke back in 2015 and it's still shifting today. But man I saved a ton of money!! I got me a rebuild manual on it and went to town.

Had the same problem on a bmw x5. Re sealed the gearbox, fitted sonnax pressure plates to d clutch and a clutch new clutches etc. 4 weeks later car came back with the exact same problem. This time we put a new d clutch drum into the vehicle. 4 weeks later vehicle came back with exact same problem. We gave the customer his money back :( There didn't seem to be a reason why this seal kept tearing. The clutch clearance was OK and the drums seamed perfectly OK. How many have you had do this? Did urs stay out of the garage for more than 4 weeks lol

These look fimilar. Working for FCA, we are only allowed valvevody or unit replacement. They do not even let us tear down. Cool to see the insides.

Thanks Gary, what is the possible cause of 8hp70 wont go in drive gear, but will move in reverse? The scan software shows that when shifting into drive, the current gear stays in neutral. The only CEL code is P1DB8 Unintended Torque Applied While In Neutral, this only showed up after reving the engine in drive, but didnt move. No grindage or noise. I do see a little metallic dust in the pan. The shift cable is still attached. I cant find info about this issue. I checked all of the solenoids and they are ohm perfect.

I always wonder, is it even worth the trouble rebuilding a transmission? Some many man-hours needed, not to mention the cost of buying and shipping new parts. On the other hand, a completely new transmission is certainly expensive too. But, fortunately or unfortunately, I am sure there are many usable transmissions sitting in junkyards. Since the transmission is well protected in the middle of the car, the trans is likely useable in all those wrecked cars, no? Sure, some of those might already have 50-100K miles on it. But they can go for another 100K miles with just a simple maintenance job of changing the fluid and the seals.

Great find on the torn seal. Why do you think this happened and why were some of the other unrelated clutches heated? Aggressive driving? Poor assembly at the factory? Hoping 50K isn't the life expectancy of these transmissions.

I do a lot of the Hellcats and Demons, some that i've done had 35K on them. I don't really know why that seal tore unless for some reason it rolled, Trans was shipped to me from Chicago so i don't know how the car is driven

Why does the fluid always seem black inside the trans housing yet the pan fluid is lighter? Shouldn't the pump circulate fluid throughout the entire trans?

Very interesting video. What does "rolled" mean? Is it poor installation, where the ring gets twisted instead of sliding smoothly in? And then it fails prematurely because the rubber is twisted? Also, why do the clutches show burning? Is it from hard driving? I have an f Pace SVR with 8 speed ZF, and I am wondering if repeated hard acceleration could shorten the life of the transmission.

yes, rolled, is the o-ring seemed like it rolled or twisted and tore up, the clutches your asking about is it the D clutch?

Hello Gary, I have an issue and maybe you can help. I have an BMW F34 and from what I could gather it has this exact type of ZF8HP on it. It has 252k kilometers and when it’s downshifting it jerks a bit in lower gears 3-2-1. I just changed the oil and pan (filter incorporated in pan) hoping that will cure the symptoms but it didn’t. The oil was quite clean for the mileage and the magnets on the pan had no metallic flakes or anything out of the ordinary, just a bit of normal clutch debris. What do you think it might be the issue, could an adaptation reset software update fix it??? Thank you! (Great videos btw, keep them coming!)

This transmission is on my Jeep Gladiator. It's super smooth. The manual says it's a "lifetime" sealed transmission but I think that's just until the warranty is expired lol. What mileage would you suggest changing the fluid/filter? Would you do an entire flush or just a standard/partial fluid change?

I would just go with a new pan/filter(OE Only, i would also purchase from a dealer and not on line) and fluid, i would say about 50K miles

Thank you for the video, I do have a question though. I have a 2020 RAM 1500 8hp75 with the start/stop feature. I noticed that the transmission in the video has a metal pan and a filter, not the plastic all in one pan. Is this an after market pan or is it standard on the 8hp75 transmission?

This is out of a BMW X6M I believe it is standard, had to order the filter from Germany

Gary, I have a question about this transmission. I have it on my 2014 BMW sedan, 60,000 miles. I’m going to change its oil and pan. But some people remove the mechatronic assembly and replace four rubber sleeves inside. I have no failure symptoms, so is there any reason for that added step, or should I just drain the oil, replace the pan and refill per standard 2-fill procedure?

The 8 speeds do not have a bridge seal, no need to drop out valvebody, if the pan is plastic, i would change it because the filter is built into the pan

All Late ones but there are different models, if the X6 is not am M series The ZF8HP45 may be used. Greetings from New York

when I build my trans i completely disassemble the valve body and carb dip it so when I reinstall the valves and springs etc... all of the left-behind particles are gone. do you fully rebuild the valve bodies also ????

It really depends on how bad the transmission is, i do not do that on every overhaul, but on the units that are really busted up i do remove all the valves. Thanks for watching

@@GaryFerraro Thank You Mr Gary. One more question came that i was gonna ask . On the valve body overhaul ZF8HP 45 when replacing solenoids you brush seals with grease . What kind of grease i can use on mine - on Monday i get all parts for valve body i truly hope after valves and plate and seal replacement my gear changes are going to get smoother . It is not jerking but i can fell some gear changes and not always . The car is BMW X3 F25 2.0 diesel xdrive B47 engine with 73000km. I just cannot resist to overhaul valve body

great video! im rebuilding a ZF8hp65 now i found clutch C frictions are all burnt the rest were fine any idea what can cause that?

I have seen the C and the E clutch going bad is common. These clutch are being applied and released through out the 8 speed. For example The D clutch is applied in 4th and stays on til 8th while the C clutch is on in 1st off in 2nd on in 3rd off in 4th on in 5th etc. Thats my opinion on that.

Hi Gary, I have a bad vibration in 6th gear on 8HP75z from 1500rpm under load on a 330e? The gearbox was rebuilt and the flywheel replaced. The torsional vibration damper was also checked by BMW. The problem persists and no-one can figure out why its happening. Any idea what could be causing this?

@@GaryFerraro basically it had new clutches seals, and valvebody recon'd. The vibration in 6th is still there but only when the car is fully up to temperature. There are several 330e's in Ireland and the UK exhibiting this problem usually with higher mileage 100k mls plus. Doubt you've seen it before but any ideas?

@@GaryFerraro no, it's more like in 3rd and 6th(most notable) at around 1800-2200rpm when you squeeze the throttle, anything above 300nm of torque basically. I bought XHP and determined this. When you floor it, doesn't do it as it will change down. One possible fix is to change the 5 > 6 shiftmap to last longer in 5 so 6th comes in at a higher rpm. Doesn't fix the underlying problem though.

That output speed sensor is part of the TCM. No wires to check. As long as powers and grounds are good. You may need a valvebody/TCM
