Join Jess from Sallie Tomato in the Zippy! These pretty and practical zippy bags can be made in two sizes! The Zippy Bags are the perfect size for traveling, shopping, and gifting! These bags can easily fit a phone, sunglasses, card wallet, checkbook, utensils, gum, and other small items! I like to clip my keys to one of the swivel clips while shopping. This pattern is also fat quarter friendly! It requires only a small amount of fabric.
In the tutorial video, Jess completes the project from start to finish, following along with the pattern. Throughout the video Jess also explains some tips to help with the written instructions. If you have any questions, we're here to help, so please just ask. Watch the lessons for this class in order, or just watch the section that you need help with. The full-length video tutorial is 39 minutes.
Prepare the Main Zipper (1:22)
Create Zipper Pockets (4:14)
Assemble the Front (7:53)
Assemble the Back (14:01)
Assembling the Bag (22:30)
Make the Crossbody Strap (32:33)
FEATURES: adjustable crossbody strap, three exterior zipper pockets and zipper closure
FINISHED SIZE: The mini measures 8" wide and 6" high. The full measures 8" wide and 8" high.
RECOMMENDED FABRICS: For the best results, use quilt weight cotton, canvas, touch pro light cork, denim, or linen for the exterior. I recommend quilt weight cotton for the lining.
HARDWARE REQUIRED: All of the hardware required for this pattern is included in the Zippy Hardware Kit, or can be purchased individually. Also choose to add tassels, rivets, and metal strap connectors if desired. Get the hardware kit here: sallietomato.com/products/har...

great demo but why didn't you have a lining with a more distinct front and back so it is easier to follow?

Thank you for the great tutorial! Thanks to you there were no bad words used in the making of my first bag. Don't know if there will ever be a second though. I did make the zipper go the wrong way but I was consistent with each one, lol! Now to use it for my cell phone!

I was very pleased to see the Miranda bag had the cutting layout, and was hoping they all do. I love this zippy bag but my faux vinal is directional so without the layout, I'm not sure which way to cut. Also do i need to use stabilizer or interfacing? I noticed that you did not for the cork.

Thanks for watching and commenting! To answer your question: A great way to check pattern placement on directional fabrics is to make a paper pattern following the cutting instructions. Then draw an arrow on the paper pattern in the direction you'd like the fabric print to be oriented. Let us know if this helps. You do not need stabilizer or interfacing if you feel your fabric has enough structure to hold the shape of the bag.

@SallieTomato when it tells to cut a large piece and then subcut I feel I'm wasting a lot of material, so I need to be sure. I don't like to waste it or have to do a lot of piecing scraps. I'll try your suggestions

If I want to use webbing or chain for the strap, how long should it be?

Sorry for the delayed response. When using webbing if you don't want the strap to be adjustable simply cut to the size you desire this would also be the same for the chain. Happy Sewing!

Are zippers by the yard wider than the zippers bought at Joann's? The pattern calls for 3/8" seam allowance when sewing next to the zippers but if I do that - I can't open the zipper the seam to too close. If 3/8" is too close - what other seam allowance???

zippers by the yard come in #5 which is 1 1/4” wide… this is the most popular size.. you can also get them in #3 which is 1” wide. Sallie Tomato carries # 5 on their website.

I was hoping that the online class was not for cork since the instructions are different. I hope I can follow along without getting confused as I have already cut all of my fabric per the instructions on the pattern.

I have a question… the instructions say to use 1/4” seam allowances throughout, but in this tutorial you say 3/8”. Jess of Oklaroot said 3/8” also. Which is correct?

Good question! Both 1/4" and 3/8" seam allowances are used throughout the pattern so be sure to follow the instructions. For example: on page 2, under ASSEMBLE THE FRONT, there's a specific note IMPORTANT: which is alerting the reader to a wider seam allowance. Thank goodness you have this video! The pattern instructions are really terrible. I made the bag trying to follow the paper instructions . Finally watched the RU-vid video and was able to make 2 of them.

When making the strap with cotton, you will be making some additional folds which will take up some of the extra length.

Same thing happened to me on pocket A. I had to seam rip and unstitch. I love the pattern, but it seems like when I open the zipper the pocket wants to pop out because it’s not stitched down with the fabric

Bought the pattern! What sewing machine make and model are you using/recommend for bagmaking. I’m having a terrible time with my Elna Excellence 680+.

In the tutorial, Jess is sewing on the BabyLock Accomplish. You should be able to sew this on your home sewing machine as all our patterns are designed to be sewn on these types of machines.
