I have the ZMF 2 old version and I think touch button is so much better than a clicky one to prevent players from smashing it when playing blitz in a chess club.

There's an alternative for lightweight travel chess clocks not shown here: The DGT Travel Timer, formerly DGT 960. Delay, Bonus, Increment included. Fits in your chess or backgammon board as well. Tempest Clock is a matter of taste, since it's just a plastic cradle (or wood if you go for the 'luxury' version not available in Europe. It seems to have the best software (since it uses your very phone for the app), but it seems to be quite sensitive to touching (difficult cleansing) and will show signs of wear early in use. App license is unclear when it comes to change phones or account. In the higher price range, go for ZMF Pro, currently best out there. Display bigger, viewable from all angles. (as opposed to Chronos as seen here)

You know….my father invented the world’s first digital tournament chess clock. It was the only one of his inventions he followed through to building a commercial prototype. He took his invention to some sort of trade show and came back dejected that there was little interest. He said Chess players were all too cheap. I checked - he never patented his device. My father, an electrical engineer, was almost always ahead of his time, or half a step out of phase with the world. Some other of his personal inventions he didn’t pursue to their conclusion: the world’s first surge suppressing power strip. A prototype that anyone would recognize as a Sony Walkman like device. Circuity to suppress hi-Fi noise we all now know as Dolby Stereo. So close…so close. Oh well…😃

Wow thats an amazing story! I have increasing became fmailiar with eletronics, and how to repair very simple things ( ru-vid.comenO20j1kLFM?si=NnuoOOaU7DKmj5MH ), and I even have a breadboard and follow simple tutorials for some basic eletronics you can see this post here: ru-vid.com/show-UCnk6Y2hk4Mg73tE-bLyxepgcommunity?lb=Ugkxo6hkVQY4JJVkiI4-d76269Dd7T1p0Q0B and I also have a second channel where do do automotive things and I tinker with simple repairs and using osocilliscopes www.youtube.com/@oneanddonediy Please like and share, a like goes a long way with the RU-vid algorithm! I hope to see your dad's prototypes or diagrams someday!!

I’ll bet people would like videos on how to program their clocks so they don’t have to read the directions. You could also do those short videos to do a quick set up and play so if they sit down to play and want to get started without watching a overly detailed 15 minute video on their clock. 😉

I think the ZMF PRO only has 3 programmable settings that you can customize, I really think it should have no less than 6 to 8!

They're good clocks but the chronos clocks have stood the test of time and they still are the best. I wish they still manufactured them.
@Grandcapi

I have a Kronos, not the model of the video, and I think it is very difficult to set it. Nobody I know is able to put in the time for the game. I think that the touch button avoids banging, and that is a good thing.I dont'know why they discontinue this thing. Furthermore, the clock is very robust. The Kronos is quite messy when we need to replace the batteries, but they last for a long time.

What tab controls do you want to set your clock? I can make a short tutorial video for you. I can also make a PDF of the instructions so you can download them as well.

Agreed. I bought the Chronos clock a while back and its incredibly difficult to set correctly. I really hate that they make it so damn difficult.

Is the glass display on the zmf pro as fragile as the chronos? Saw a chronos display cracked when a dude exchanged queens in blitz. The Queen slid out his hand and cracked the display. I have the chronos gx and the zmf clock with the tough display that sells for 40.
@katzenpapa
@katzenpapa 10 месяцев назад
I don't know if the display is fragile or not. I never hit it with anything. I would hope it's not too fragile but I assume it is quite rare to break a chess clock display.

@@katzenpapait's the whole idea behind the zmart plastic clock. The display is hard to break. Special material

zmart funs are pretty good. Idk if they keep as good of time as a chronos ? Anybody every tested that?. Occasionally , if you are down to one second, I've seen a zmf (non pro) reset to 59 seconds. I think that was just one bug on one clock and haven't seen it happen to all the clocks. Also, having had two different iterations of the zmf, I will say build quality isn't as good as a kronos. The middle button and the on off switch have both had to been replaced on both my clock(granted they get a lot a lot of use for speed chess) The parts are super readily available from anywhere(used to get them at Radio Shack) and cheap. Not saying any of this is really bad given the zmarts are way more affordable and way way way easier to program. I am going to buy a third one, and still not pay as much over the last ten years as a top of the line kronos ; but I bet one kronos would last 10 years easy and longer.
@katzenpapa

Never knew about that bug, I'll be on the lookout for that! Have you tried the DGT 2500 yet?

Looks good! I just don't like those as much as you have to flip it over to reset it

Thanks for the video! It blew me away when you pulled the button on the Chronos and there was a mechanical switch, just like in my mechanical keyboard. I imagine the switch is soldered and can't be pulled and replaced? Also, do you happen to know if other popular chess clocks with buttons have mechanical switches as well? I'm trying to decide on a chess clock over Black Friday. Chronos not available in colors anymore, guess they're running out of stock because they are no longer being produced?
@katzenpapa
@katzenpapa 9 месяцев назад
Yes when I first discovered there was mechanical switches on this clock it blew my mind as well, since I'm somewhat of a keyboard geek! The switch is soldered but can be easily removed if necessary. Actually in the older DGT clock there is mechanical switch, I showed this here in this video ru-vid.comenO20j1kLFM As for Chronos I assume they are running out of stock! Good luck on your search!

Have you ever used (or heard) a ZMF Tap n Set with buttons? I couldn't find video on RU-vid where you could hear it. It sure looks like the same kind of button with an underlying mechanical switch (not sure what kind) as a Chronos.
@katzenpapa
@katzenpapa 8 месяцев назад
@@kleefan8 i have never used a tap and set (or heard) so i can't say. I might see if i can get my hands on one and test it out.
@kleefan8
@kleefan8 8 месяцев назад
@@katzenpapa That would be cool if you were able to do that, but I understand it might not be possible. I was trying to decide between the Tap n Set button vs. the ZMF Fun II. The Fun II has a cool retro design with colorful LEDs but sensors instead of mechanical switches. I actually don't need a clock yet, but thought I'd get one during USCF Cyber sale at 30% off, to prepare for when I make a return to OTB play.

The Chronos GX (and maybe the samtimer/long body chronos) "may" be in stock again sometime in the summer. *may*. Both of my two longbody chronoses (sensor and push), with the latest programming they have, are currently at samtimer for repair (PCB ribbon pad printed flex cable issue to the LCD). The longbody chronos allows you to set delay and have the delay shown, if you are using delay, as well as the # of seconds at all times, and also allows you to set seconds (So for FIDE time controls with increment, you can give each player the bonus 30 seconds instantly--normally when you start someone's clock, they get the extra 30 seconds immediately). The GX however, does not allow you to set seconds in any time control longer than 99:59 minutes (1 hour and 39 minutes) directly, instead you have to quickly start the clock then immediately stop it, then you can edit the time and add 30 seconds (full seconds can be accessed here) to each player. (although you lose the milliseconds you took between the start and stopping of the clock, but at least that's available). The one thing the GX does have that the longbody does not, is ability to set both delay and increments in the same setting, so you can have mixed mode settings (this is very rare but has been used in the past). So except for that rarely used time control mixed feature, the longbody with current programming is FIDE legal as well as the GX (if you remember to set seconds quickly after starting the clock). The one serious issue with the longbody is the oxidation and wearing out of the pad printed cable that is soldered and then glued onto the PCB, which can make the digits fade, as they lose electrical current (this is not a problem with the LCD display itself). They can be fixed if you have the knowledge (apparently just a hot air gun or a hair dryer combined with pressure is good enough), I don't think the Chronos GX has this issue as it uses a JST style connector on the PCB.
