On this episode of INFLATED!!!!
In this episode, I'll be removing a transom from a Zodiac Mark 2 Classic because the glue had delaminated from it and was starting to fall out of the boat. Now that I have the tear all repaired, let's get this transom installed now!!! See the process I use on installing this transom.
Part 2 of 2.

Awesome! Great video. For the past 5 years I've been trying to restore my late Grandpa's now 41 year old Zodiac Mark 2 (I think). Every year I spend far more time and money than it's possibly worth only to run out of both (time and money). Every spring I drag the old thing out foolishly optimistic that "this is the year" I get ahead of the curve of it's inevitable demise just long enough to experience it one time as it was when it was in it's glory days, if only for a brief moment. This video is pretty much the exact procedure I'm going to be attempting to replicate over the next few weeks. This is gonna be the year come hell or high water..

Confirm working time with glue mixture AND which glue did you use? I read that it could be a HAPYLON GLUE OR PVC....
@gashopperinc
@gashopperinc Год назад
This boat was a PVC boat. And PVC glue was used. Follow the manufacturers recommended times between glue applications.

Great video....My bottom has started to seperate from the transom around my drain plugs on my GT Mark II. What glue would you recommend?
@gashopperinc
@gashopperinc Год назад
2 part repair glue, either stabond or Zodiac's Z7096

No breather while using MEK?
@gashopperinc
@gashopperinc Год назад
Shop is fully ventilated with an abundance of fresh air for replenished breathing without the fumes.

Thoughts on the rest of the boat glue delaminating too? IE if you do JUST the back end, how long before other issues arise?

Good question, this particular boat is still on the water. With the repairs still holding out. I had to re-watch the video, thought it was another boat I did where client brought it back 9 months later where baffles and seams ruptured rendering the boat useless. So I redacted my last comment. Sorry about that.

What do you recommend if you get small tears in the black material that holds the transom? Also, how could I reinforce it? I use my dinghy in a River and occasionally hit a rock at slow speeds.

GD man, that is quite the project..!!! Of course my Drain holes are off a 1/4"...Do I get a brownie badge?, FFS, that really is alot of work...took me three days to get 90% done then I spilled the amount needed to finish off teh last outer strip of PVC. I gotta ask. If you had used WEAVER 3001 which is a 475ML can. would you have gotter dun with two cans?!?!?!?!? In other words, how much did you use for this project? Keeping in mind that I completely removed the transom, and reattached the inner deck strip and ALL side strips...ADN a 1/2 can of Acetone and a 1/2 can of MEK!!!! JFC...

Should have used STABOND .

That's pretty good for your first installation. If brownie points was available, I'd send them to you. Lol. Generally a full 750ml can of Zodiac glue is what I'd go through on an installation like that. And there's usually a but left over for touch ups or patches that I missed. If you used the Weaver glue, then you should just have enough with the 2 cans. Depending on far you go on removing the peeling sections, you might need a 3rd can. And like you found it, you will go through a bunch of Acetone and MEK for cleaning. Hope everything works out for you. By the sounds of it, you did a good job on getting the transom in. Holes might be off a bit, but thar does happen sometimes, just make a patch to cover the exposed wood and you should be good to go.

My top 3 choice are Zodiac, Stabond, then Weaver. Weaver glue is expensive for what you get quantity wise.

Hi do you ever use gflex epoxy for this it would be perfect for where the plywood buts to the tube and floor. Also did you seal the wood first with hypolon glue assuming the tubes were pvc glue
@gashopperinc
@gashopperinc Год назад
Only time gflex can be used is on the solid rubber transom mounts. It's not good for fabric mounts. Just finished repairing and boat that the previous shop tried using gflex to repair but they made a real mess of the boat. Vid is posted in a 4 part series. All new transoms we make in shop are epoxy sealed and gelcoat.

@@gashopperinc Thanks. My zodiac mark 2 compact is pvc. Will pvc glue stick to the wood if I seal it with epoxy first. I was only going to use the gflex where the wood buts to the tube and the floor Thanks for taking the time to reply

Is there a reason transoms aren’t made out of aluminum? I just got an Inmar 470 with rotten ass and was planning on making it out of aluminum
@gashopperinc
@gashopperinc Год назад
Some manufacturers have been switching over to aluminum transoms. The biggest issues is weight, even though its aluminum, and also costs. Most aluminum transoms are hollow to allow for reduced weight, which makes for flexing more common. If it flexes to much, welds or aluminum cracks which can be costly to repair unless your a welder. Many Pros and Cons for each having a Wood or an Aluminum transom.
