14:34 Fun fact for folks that are fans of the Chainsaw Man anime. You might recognize the disco snails are the same snails that Makima is feeding Denji in the opening intro visuals of the show, that was the animators little hint as to how just like the worms and the snails, Makima could be manipulating Denji for... something.

There’s a parasite that crawls into a tadpole near where it’s legs come out, it causes them to grow extra legs so that the froglet is more likely to be eaten by a bird due to its new handicap
@fishticles5
@fishticles5 7 месяцев назад
yes its a flatworm that will shatter chromosones causing for deformities anywhere from extra legs to eyes or legs in the mouth teeth on their back or really anything else but its random each time due to the literal shattering of them.

Despite being aware of a lot of these parasites - weird interests as a teen and... some rather questionable career ambitions I was studying for - and the inherently horrific nature of them, I have to hand it to you, Bloom. You've got one hell of a way to reignite the innate nausea of being placed in the victims' perspectives and making it all the more terrifying to think about.
@wannabewyvern
@wannabewyvern 7 месяцев назад
honestly parasites deserve more love, or at least respect. The fact that these creatures can do this to their hosts is absolutely insane- I knew about all of these aside from the wasps that brainwash the spider and that absolutely blew me away. Parasites are an incredible feat of nature and are so ingenious. Though, that might be the parasitic worm inside my brain speaking for me, ready to start a zombie outbreak.

fun fact: some people willingly eat cordyceps as a "superfood", which is just a little horrifying when there's a non-zero percent chance that it might somehow evolve to work on humans or other vertebrates
@Bonkpunktexe
@Bonkpunktexe 8 месяцев назад
also, for toxo, it seemingly has effects on lifestock like cows, sheep, and pigs, more specifically they seem to make them more likely to miscarry. which is why some farmers are advocating against use of barn cats and instead allowing snakes or owls and other raptors hunt the mice, since they could in theory be more effective at hunting mice than cats are, since cats also hunt for songbirds and has left a huge impact on some songbird populations.
@pintolerance785
@pintolerance785 8 месяцев назад
Cordyceps affects Ants. Do you know how much farther up the chain of evolution, humans are from Ants. No, the earth will expire from a heat death by the sun before cordyceps even gets close to Humans, for a fungi to even think to start evolving it would first need a reason to do so and that hasn't been given nor will it ever be given for them to infect humans. It simply only exists in the realm of science fiction like time travel or teleportation.
@florentineeffect
@florentineeffect 8 месяцев назад
Non zero percent chance is crazy.
@Bonkpunktexe
@Bonkpunktexe 8 месяцев назад
@@florentineeffect like i get it, the fungus is extremely unlikely to develop to become parasitic in humans, but there's still a miniscule chance that it might yet people eat it. its like eating parasitic worms that only affect some bird species because "they aren't parasitic to humans" yeah but WHY would you do that wtf
@queercandy1
@queercandy1 7 месяцев назад
cordyceps becomes completely incapable of incubation at 90°F, and humans can develop fevers a few degrees above the normal temperature (97°F), and we can withstand fevers of around 102° without serious harm, unless it stays for a very long time. so while there technically is a non-zero chance, the fungus would have to evolve *significant* heat resistance to even be able to survive in the human body, and that's not even to mention the immune system fighting fungus or the fact that it would extremely likely not affect humans in the way it affects insects, due to the fact that we have far different neural structures and brains that are alien when compared to each other. so even if cordyceps could survive in our body heat, chances are it would be more similar to typical fungal infections rather than the complete takeover that ants experience.

Hi, if you are scared of toxo just remember to clean your vegetables! The most common way of getting infected is by eating contaminated vegetables and gardening. You may not have a cat, but maybe one likes to poop in your yard, and if you don't wash your hands after gardening there is risk of getting the parasites to your mouth. Besides that, remember a cat will only be infectious for a couple weeks in its life, so don't go kicking little snowball out of the house. Also the cat poop has to be at least 4 days old, the eggs need a bit of maturing to be able to infect, so keep the cleaning of the litter box regular and don't go licking your hands after doing so.

Fun fact, YOU can also be infected with the last stage of the liver fluke. But this is a very, very rare infection in humans, because we are not the primary target. If you are one of the unlucky few, who catch it and will get sick with it, you may experience change in your bathroom habits (everything from dysenteria, bloody stools up onto constipation), nausea, bloating in the early stages to jaundice, gallstone like symptomes, hepetatis and pankreatits and even akute liver death. BUT, and i will stress this, THIS IS RARE! If you want to worry about parasites, worry about bedbugs, oxyuriasis and headlice. These are the most commen in humans.

Anyways yes I have to bring up this game every time the topic arises. I love it, even if it does get a little silly (I mean, really, the fungus doesn't even effect the ants, which irl are the most well known victim of the fungus. But then again the fungus in the game was modified by a scientist so idk maybe that did something) But yeah. I will be annoying whenever the cordyceps fungus is mentioned. Almost as annoying as the last of us fans when this gets brought up, amirite? Idk

Oh man you went where I wanted. There are current studies on the toxo, and skitzaphrinia. By giving people with skitzaphrinia adrenaline shots it become more controllable if I recall. But now I wanna do a study on the parasite and adrenaline. Last thing. We are an multicellular organism. What if our brain and the nerve system is already a parasite that took control of this meat suit to begin with? Of I recall mushroom and the brain have oddly a similar nutrien ratio and even some mushrooms have the consistency of brains.
@tzorfireis425
@tzorfireis425 7 месяцев назад
Uh No? Our brains are not parasites at all. That’s just not a thing. For one thing, human stem cells can turn into any type of human cell, neurons, muscle cells, bone cells, blood cells, whatever. They also all share *exactly* the same components, including the mitochondrial genes, which is flatly impossible if the brain isn’t the same organism with the same ancestry as the body. If that’s not convincing enough, we can also prove that brains aren’t a fungus. Because fungi actually have a wildly different genome from all animals (hence why they’re in a separate kingdom entirely). If the brain was a fungus or plant or protist, it’d be fairly obvious that the genome is so dramatically non-human that it’d be trivial to find, but it’s not, because the nervous system is a system that evolved as part of animals within animals. Also, yeah no shit we’re a multicellular organism. All animals are multicellular. That’s part of how they became animals in the first place.

There's an anime called Mushi-Shi that does a _great_ job in my opinion of using the raw, unsettling horror that can happen when parasites like this get their hands on humans. To be more specific I would recommend (S1E13: One-Night Bridge) which is basically just about a guy grappling with the revelation that his girlfriend isn't actually his girlfriend, but is, in fact, a little cReATurE piloting her long-dead corpse. Though there are many more episodes that can capture that same feel, this one in particular relates the cloest to this video. I'd recommend it if you're into a more niche, _existential_ brand of horror.

I VERY likely had toxoplasmosis, except it doesn't quite fit this. The previous tenant of my apartment had a cat & I made the mistake of trying to rid the bathroom of the litter in the grout & the leftover stench of it with bleach. Huge mistake. The theory was that the chemicals carried in the cat's urine were enough to mimic the effects of that parasite. For a month I had to fight the urge to jump to my death every chance I had. I couldn't sleep, had severe shaking like a crack addict & had to move to get away from it. I lost clothes, furniture & a LOT of books & memorabilia because the smell got into the fabric, surfaces & of course was absorbed by paper. That this was triggered by smell is scary.
