After failing multiple times with Etcher, I decided to use Rufus, and that worked. For those who have an older machine, the ones that doesn't use UEFI, use Rufus (it will download some extra data for linux iso) and set the installation to non-UEFI.

@@kalijasin My parents are 73 and 76 years old and they use Zorin OS because I installed and set everything up for them. It is just as easy to use as macOS or Windows 10 and the cool thing about it is that you don't have to use the command line to install software, which makes it usable for those who are not tech savvy.

I'm watching with this laptop on Zorin OS. =D Btw it will automatically install Wine and install windows executables if you double click a .exe file. Also, Zorin connect is great if you have an android phone. You can text from it and do wireless file transfers as well as many other things.

Zorin OS doesn't have wine installed out of box on versions 15.x and later, mostly due to security concerns.

I’ve used zorin for years! On older laptops for friends and family that want a really really good Linux that can be used like windows or macOS without having to learn how to code for Linux. I’ve always suggested it to ppl wanting to get into Linux the fun way and not rage quitting or giving up on Linux 100% lol.

Your channel is one of the few I have notifications set on and I'm loving it, the way you move from one topic to the other on videos is very similar to how I am currently exploring. I'm suggesting you make a video on using Linux for gaming and emulation using a much powerful PC. That's what I am using now but would like to watch a video on this and maybe discover new things. Well, I kinda installed Zorin OS on my main as a dual boot for just the giggles, I actually opened it before wiping the install and now I love it.

@@spooky3669 this is debatable but for me a nice ui. Never tried it because of the ui. Never liked it. And I don't like tinkering around I want as many things working out of the box. For example as a windows user I have the same wallpaper since 2008...

I don't understand? I came from windows too, installed Mint and everything worked out of the box I did not had to "tinker" with anything. Unless you call changing the Theme, Wallpaper and Installing an extra app "tinkering"? Actually the only thing I had to use the Terminal for was to mount extra drives automatically on start up. A thing Zorin can't do either via its GUI

@@spooky3669 exactly, making it look and feel the way that I want. I don't mind tinkering and making small adjustments, for instance I wanted to use command + t to open terminal, I did it. Every linux distro works out of the box for newer machines ( had once a laptop with an r5 m330 graphics that lost support from amd so no drivers ). That is what I mean. I want some touchpad gestures, i don't mind doing that but when it takes too many adjustments I just drop it. And I really don't like the UI. I am comfortable of making some adjustments and some compromises, for instance in Zorin my compromise is that I don't know the command and haven't found it yet to cycle workspaces, but I'll do that, it's a really small compromise. To make it simple, if it takes more than 3 hours to make it feel good for me, i'd drop it, it's not for me. Every distro I tried on my new laptop worked out of the box, everything, every single driver, even the printer ( just plugged in and it was ready ) but in the whole package something was missing. I can't explain it, it's a feelin.

I first used Linux Caldera in 1999. I use VirtualBox, and have used many, many Distros. I believe Zorin OS to be better than even Lubuntu! Excellent!

@@unpaintedcanvas The only reason I haven't done it yet is because my i7 4770k doesn't support VT-D I looked a lot into it and even "prepared" on a couple VM I think I'll get the hang of it hopefully, may I ask you just one thing that I don't know yet : is it possible to use a secondary drive only to be utilized by the VM ? Also what kind of issues were you facing that I should be aware of ?

Such a good feature - Zorin connect, which is connection between the pc and your android phone natively built inside the system. This is great game changer compared to other distros.

I have been using ZorinOS Ultimate off and on now since version 12.x. I LOVE it! Now have version 15.x and I have to say it is well worth the money. One feature I love with the paid version is the ability to use a very macOS-like dock appearance configuration. To my knowledge, you only have that option with the paid version. Maybe it's possible to install it in the Lite or Core versions, but I don't want to spend a ton of time crawling around in the forums or through the interwebs looking for instructions to do so. The devs have done the work and I don't mind paying that price for the convenience of a very polished OS. Once I am able to game on Linux well using Steam and GoG, I'm switching my daily driver OS over to Zorin. I just installed the Lite version on an old Gateway laptop with dual Celeron, 2GB of RAM and an SSD and it is running well. I also need to install it on my Moms' old Core2Duo machine that is currently running Windows 7 (I KNOW. I KNOW.). Thank you for this honest review on ZorinOS. It is nice to see a review of a product I am using by someone that I respect.

i was going to suggest this os on your last video. i use zorin os as my daily driver, but i have to use version 12. even the light version of 15 is too much for my old compaq presario cq56. it would probably be fine if i upgraded my ram, though. i really love the zorin home page when you launch chromium. incredibly intuitive.

I use to love Zorin OS and always wanted to try out Zorin Ultimate. If you're willing to purchase it I'd love to see a video featuring Zorin Ultimate and how it differs from Zorin Core. I'd also like to see a video on how Zorin Lite differs from Zorin Core if you're interested in making those. Great videos!

I've got Ultimate(did it to support the creaters) and you can make your own Ultimate from Core by simply downloading all of the additional apps that come with it from the Software store for free. The only thing it doesn't come with is the larger Apearance selection....but that's strictly cosmetic. AS I stated at the beginning, the main reason for the upgrade to Ultimate is to help support the fine folks who make it, maintenance it, and support it, a nice gesture. Up to you.

I saw Zorin OS being demoed on another youtube channel before the end of Windows 7 support and was curious about it then (I kept Win7 until the death and reluctantly switched to Win10), now that I've seen retropie running in Zorin I'll have to get serious about switching to it soon.

I have watched a few video's of ZORIN OS and so far hooked for something lite weight for a laptop that was given to me. An HP Pavilion DV8-1200 with upgraded ram of 8GB. I was trying to use LMDE 4 but I think it is to much for it. I wanted something to use for entertainment purposes like old school gaming. Appreciate the info video and answering all my questions.

Zorin was my Linux distro of choice when I was using it on an old computer for awhile before I obtained a Windows key. If you're not into PC gaming this is a good choice.

Actually I'm using Zorin Ultimate and it's got PlayOnLinux and Steam already installed plus I added Lutris from the Software store and I'm gaming exceptionally well on here. I've got nearly every single game I was playing on my Windows desktop installed with no issues. Smooth and fully functional. AS with all Linux distro's, it's best to have an nVidia card installed due to it's better driver support, but I've used AMD without any real issues if that's what you have already.

Ahh nice you heard me! Next I recommend you to review another distro called Pop OS. Its very lightweight and probably the best for emulation and gaming. An alternative to Pop OS would be a distro called Manjaro. I hope you do a review on them soon.

I've tried this distro before. It's a nicely skinned Ubuntu derivative. Those who want a good-looking easy to use OS will like this. A good alternative to Mint. Core version is based on Gnome, while Lite version uses Xfce instead. Ultimate is just Core with some extra apps and themes pre-installed. Amazingly, this distro is being maintained by only two devs.

All Linux distros are basically the same and can mostly achieve the same thing. Just use the one you like and feel comfortable with the most. Most people usually use Linux Mint or Peppermint OS as a daily driver as they're more user-friendly. These two are based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian (a bit less user-friendly). I would've liked to see any performance tracking like the Windows task manager open so we can see how much memory it takes to run the OS. My Windows laptop takes 2 gb just to run Windows.

It would be helpful if you showed how the file system works. I assume this has something similar to Explorer on Windows. Can you create shortcuts and add desktop icons? The look is very minimalist, but seems impractical.

You should be able to create desktop icons out of the box on Zorin OS. You can also create shortcuts and modify them after digging a bit in the Settings. Also the file system is fairly different from windows. Every program you install which doesn't need root privileges stays within your home folder. Moreover, a bunch of activity occurs within subfolders your home folder (e.g. Documents, Pictures, Downloads, Music, etc.), making much of the file system (though of course not all) more central than windows (at least intuitively). For the rest of the file system outside of the home folder/directory, I'd suggest looking up a dedicated tutorial video since that part of the file system is very different compared to windows.

I recommended ZO to people around me. I used it for a while a few years ago. I felt ZO was very safe and fast. Now I have ZO installed on my laptop. I installed Ubuntu first, but it was cleared due to a lot of errors. I set up look like MacOS.

No that is Not possible, there are no Best Disto's. The Distro fits the User and visa versa. So the Only way You can find out the Best one is to try them out. You can do that very easily with a Live USB Not to mention the compatibility of the Distro's according to your machines hardware! How Good is the Best Distro when does not recognize your WiFi for example???

The major difference between GIMP and Photoshop is Curves. In Photoshop it's easy to find the Curves setting, then move the left slider to the very start of the curve on the left then the same for the right (but Right slider to the start of the curve on the Right side). GIMP is lacking this so it takes quite a bit more work to produce the exact same outcome from GIMP as it is in Photoshop. But, GIMP is my primary photo editor in Pinguy as well as Ubuntu Mate. I can't say I agree with the idea that the relatively old Zorin OS is as Windows like as simply using Ubuntu Mate and the Redmond (panel) layout. ubuntu-mate.community/t/choosing-and-changing-panel-layouts-ubuntu-mate-18-04/16502

This is sooo good like they are open sourced and still this good , imagine what if they had been another company like Microsoft and had been charging for the downloads how better they would have done and I noticed that the basic aesthetics of Zorin OS is like windows 10 and 11 mixed up especially the way how it looks resembles very much with windows 11 for this video obviously like ya we can get it to look like a Mac OS too but this is one year earlier from windows 11....

I am an experienced Linux user and I do most things in the terminal, but my two young sons have to learn Windows at school and so I think I will choose Zorin OS for my family computer... terminal for me, Windows-looking GUIs for my 7- and 8-year olds. WINE no longer comes preinstalled, but Zorin OS automatically installs it when you double-click on a .exe file.

It's not much, I've been using watching zorin for a couple of years and the only difference I can tell is an option that lets you make it look like mac. Everything else that comes in the ultimate version can be installed from the software center.

@@spooky3669 tbh when I first used it, was a few years ago, and I found the forums OK, I had a couple questions. And I used to get Linux user help from members of another general Linux board I frequented. But I've had no need to raise questions since. I still use Windows too and more often, and my Bodhi laptop is basic media use only, so luckily I don't need support with it. Shame to hear that though. Doesn't help with pulling new users if there's no decent support channels.

I had success running this on a single core AMD Athlon NEO processor with 4gb of RAM. I used the 'core' flavour, and the only thing that was sluggish was video conference. Zoom was the worst test, despite the Radeon 4000 series HD graphics card and HD webcam. Using a dual core Turion processor, I didn't have any of these issues.

@ETA Prime Check Zorin OS Ultimate this is the easiest way to run Windows Apps in Linux by rightclicking the exe ;) You can download Ultimate if you Google it. My second Fav Linux OS is MX Linux for me the most powerful Debian Linux OS and very lightweight perfect for old and pwerless computers

Sadly you haven't shown it, but Zorin OS has the appearance every modern OS should have, with a full-screen applications menu, a floating taskbar, and app shortcuts in the center. It's annoying how some distros launch their default interface based on early 2000's Windows, with the bad and unintuitive start menu.

I personally recommend MX Linux. I tried Zorin but I found that it stressed the system too much causing constant fan whirl. MX Linux on the other hand is very fast, snappy, and lower on system demand. Oh, and its very very stable.

Sounds very good (and bad!!). But how many seconds does it take to boot MX? After 30+ years with Windows, Mac, Unix, I still haven't got used to the extremely slow booting of modern OS:es. (My first computers did it in a second, literally, as they had ROM based OSes.)

@@herrbonk3635 I have SSD drive and a full boot takes about 8 seconds, but having said that I very rarely need to reboot, simply because I just hit the sleep button.

@@config2000 Yes, sleep or hibernate is what have saved me from insanity for the last two decades. No offense, but eight seconds from an SSD is still embarrasingly slow in my world, taking into acount that SSDs are closer to DRAM than to disks in access speed.

@@herrbonk3635 There is another thing to consider, and that is usage speed. MX is quick with file handling, opening/closing applications, and general OS speed. When I use Windows it feels dog slow and stalls quite a lot with the 'not responding' spinning circle and white-outs.

@@config2000 Sure, that's relevant as well. Thanks for the info! I will download and try it. However, it was the Windows and Unix ridiculous boot times (even on a fast 25 MHz 486 with an expensive HD) that shocked me thirty years ago. Both systems were snappy in other regards at the time. I was extremely puzzled during the 1990s as to why boot times didn't improve, rather getting even worse, despite computers now being thousands of times faster than my first computers (which started in a split second).

Thanks for the work, man. I do have a question, between zorin os and endless os which one you will recommend for a low end laptop (asus with intel atom and 2gb ram? It's just for a 9 years old kid who really is in to tech. Again, thanks for your awesome work.
