The Internet says that installing a cam in my 2016 ZX-10R will make HUUUUUUGE power gains!… It also said that using your see-through Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 is crazy and that buying a full exhaust system is a waste of money since the OEM Kawi head pipes are so good that I only need a slip-on… Is any of this true?
Great questions and luckily we have our friend Mike’s beautiful carbon-fibered-out 10R that just so happens to be our Sprint Filter long term test bike to figure them out with. Brock first explains what we are doing, why, and where he expects us to end up on a bike with 23,000 miles (37014 km) on the odometer that had a Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 installed at 16,000 miles (25749 km) replacing the P08 that had been in the bike almost since the day it was purchased.
So this is a content THREE for ONE as we:
1. Test to see if the Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 install resulted in a power loss from excess dust/debris entering the engine.
2. Test the difference in power/torque between a Brock’s Performance Penta-Carbon full exhaust system vs. Brock’s Predator (3/4 System) utilizing the stock OEM titanium head pipes.
3. Test the power/torque before and after tuning for the Kawasaki Intake Cam: www.kawasaki.com/accessories/...

A whole bunch more as today's bikes are just about perfect. But it's more than that. Today's materials allow for much higher rpm's without a loss of reliability. Since horsepower is a function of RPM, the engines of today are tough to beat.

The reason torque is lost at lower RPMs with larger cams is due to air being pushed out of the cylinder by the piston as the intake valve closes - that is because the air doesn’t have enough velocity to stay in the cylinders when the intake valve is closing later (longer duration for opening). But at higher RPMs, you have more velocity which builds slight pressure increases when the air coming out of the cylinder is pushed back in by the higher velocity incoming air.

Yes I’ve noticed this my 08 r1 flashed and dyno tuned had a lot more low rpm torque than my 2016 Zx10r I had a friend who had an issue with his 08 r1 he tried putting on a Manual timing chain adjuster and the bike would stall or he’d have to hold the throttle to keep it on when he came to me to check the engine because I had previously rebuilt two r1 engines to check his timing the intake came was a few teeth off I fixed it and the problem was gone. I’ve noticed a lot of people with 2016 complain their bikes stall.

DOHC are race tech already. It's the aftermarket that needs you to buy and swap stuff. But, first play with stock cam degree, independently of each other, for where and how YOU want power; irrespective of emissions mandates and rideability. Along with exhaust systems and ECU flash & ign.timing, before going engine hardware swapping. The 140hp Kawi cam is optimal for the displacement and street performance...Most guys don't understand what a different cam will do. You're doing good in explaining power principles... Investing in degreeing tools, for said int/exh cams is what everyone wants to do, if you're swapping cams. Seeing that power loss as well, you need to know if it's in spec; and tuning the cam install timing, as mentioned.

Displacement gives a much greater potential starting point. Not to mention, far higher torque than most 1L screamer engines. Fat torque at low and mid rpm is a satisfying engine. Just not many four cylinder engines actually tuned this way anymore, outside a Vmax, ZX14R, or Hayabusa. I remember running a demo day on the former 1250 Bandit. 1255cc long stroke i-4 and that thing felt like an electric motor even below 4,000 rpm. Just a solid shove in the pants.

Brock, my 2017 ZX-10RR with an intermediate pipe, stock exhaust muffler, and stock air filter, I put down 172.4 hp. Adding a Woolich Racing Kit (w/Tune) and a Sprint P08-F185 filter, same intermediate pipe and same stock exhaust muffler, I went from 172.4 to 196.8 hp (+24.4 hp). At this point, would I pick up any additional hp with a Penta-carbon Full System? Or do you suggest the Penta-carbon Slip-on as the stock 10RR headers are stout enough? Pending your advice.

Hey Brock, you keep mentioning the heat and the correction factor, affecting the peak numbers and causing the losses, but shouldn’t the SAE correction factor “correct” for the hot condition numbers? In that instance, his loss of power (before the remap) was real.... the 1.04 correction factor should make the numbers apples to apples in theory right? Also, on the final numbers where you gained 5 hp up top, looked like you leaned it WAY out to get those gains..13.87 AFR at WOT? I’m surprised you’d let it go out like that. Love the vid and the info in it...
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 3 года назад
In theory, yes SAE correction factor should compensate....in practice, it's inaccurate. Since we have the probe in the pipe through the pump, it reads about .5 higher for an actual of 13.37. Even so, 13.87 isn't terribly lean - remember, the bike will add additional fuel up top to compensate for ram air.

Do BST wheels allow faster acceleration? Sort of, less weight, less sprung weight = faster acceleration? And in turn, does this equal horsepower on a dyno or not really, only acceleration and speed?
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 3 года назад
Of course. The reduced MOI is the same as unlocking free horsepower via quicker acceleration. Yes, some bikes show a considerable power gain switching from heavy stock wheels to BST's. The ZX-14's show about 5 RWHP. But all bikes show a decrease in time from x rpm to the peak limiter. .5 seconds quicker in 5th gear is typical.

Brock, I been back and forth and I believe I've narrowed down my exhaust selection to your Penta-carbon for my 2017 ZX-10RR. So the decision is between your Penta-carbon slip-on verse your Penta-carbon full system (your headers verse my 10RR titanium headers). My understanding is, your headers are stainless steel, correct? So then they would be heavier than my stock titanium headers, correct? But, will the increased flow of your headers over stock Kawasaki ZX-10RR titanium headers be worth the swap? Or should I stick with the Penta-carbon slip-on? Last we spoke, you did state that your headers would yield a little more mid-range while remaining very close to titanium headers at the top end. My bike put down a best of 196.8 and I still have the restrictive stock Kawasaki exhaust muffler with an intermediate pipe. What is your advice/suggestions for my application? Will the full system only bump the mid-range or will it bump top end over the stock titanium headers as well? Thanks in advance!!

Hello GR8WHITEC5, the oem head pipes work well and are tough to beat up top...but we still can by a bit. Our ultra-light stainless headpipes weigh almost the same as the OEM ti head pipes and, of course, the complete full stainless system weighs considerably less than stock. Please check out this dyno chart between stock, slip-on and full. So in terms of reliability alone do you think the finger follower zx10s 19-22 Is significantly more so than the 11-18s? Will stiffer valve springs help make the 11-18s more reliable/safer at higher rpms? If not then what?
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 2 года назад
Hello, I can't speak to the reliability of either since zero our in-house or collaborative ZX-10R have ever failed since we started working seriously with them in 2016. I can tell you that, as a general rule and in my years of experience that aftermarket valve springs are sub-par quality to OEM and especially OEM RACE springs...in fact, most OEM springs begin their life as race springs and eventually become part of later OEM engines. At Brock's. if we were having a problem involving springs, we would first try to source OEM KIT valve springs (bit.ly/3zr7LoQ )...if unavailable, we would try to make other OEM KIT RACE springs work (the bike doesn't care about the name on the packages). if all else fails, we would source aftermarket springs (after much due diligence). We have had the best luck in the past using aftermarket springs from Carpenter Racing Engines.

@@BrockDavidson I was told the zx10s valves float at higher rpms so wasn't sure if there was a remedy to fix that i.e stiffer valve springs etc
@BrockDavidson

The real question is the definition of "higher" rpm's...as a general rule, we won't go above 400-500 RPM's higher on the peak of most bikes. Unfortunately, even a couple hundred more than stock can cause valve train chaos /valve float etc... We have see guys destroy an otherwise great engine in just a few miles by exceeding the valvetrains limits.

May be a little cam chain stretch. I'd try advancing the intake a couple degrees and set the lash at max. Otherwise I'd say fuck it and just ride it

Thank you so much for this video brock. Really applies to me as I bought a 06 engine for my 4rr that i will slowly build while i beat up on my current 30k mile engine. I have a question. I have a healtech qs and I'm wondering what my options would be to control ignition timing. I'm assuming I can't use a dyno jet ignition module since the qs already piggybacks off the coils.
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 4 года назад
You can still use the ignition module with the qs. That said, ignition timing changes on modern sportbikes turn out to be a waste of time/effort/cash 99% of the time. This covers it well: bit.ly/3hmfScy

Brock are you saying a bike with 23,000 miles is already down on power from after break in period? That 23,000 or even 30,000 miles is, “a lot of miles for a sport bike.”?
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 3 года назад
Most definitely, especially if the fuel system was not maintained. Most streetbikes that have just been ridden and had regular oil changes come in WAY down on power. We have a couple example videos at the bottom of the page here: bit.ly/2Sq1ntt

Have a car Dyno Cars show up all the time and lose with a cam swap. Degreeing the cam helps much of the time. Lot time and trial and error. Variable cam timing today sure makes tuning easier if the software has the cam tables.

Just to clarify- the 19 ZX10 Kit Cams are very different. The 19+ head is completely changed from 16-18, so the cams actually have a very long duration profile. I have done the install in the 19 ZX10 and had great results.

Hi brock I've got both Kawasakis race intake and exhaust cams i got a 2016 zx10r the race manual is saying intake 113 degrees and 108 for the exhaust I've read every seems to say 110 intake and 108 exhaust works best whatd your remondaton fot drag racing Also heard 110 for intake exhaust and 112 for peak power Thanks Jock

The intake cam he put in it doesnt have more duration just .2mm more lift over the stock cam they are both 301 duration. Its 10.3mm lift stock vs 10.5mm for krt cam.

@BrockDavidson After installing the drop-in cams. Does the timing from the ecu need to be adjusted or base zx10r timing will do?

I assume we are speaking of ignition timing. If so, it's already optimized in our flash. Adding the cams does nothing to require additional ignition timing adjustments.

Nope. Not on my car. Hellcats dont gain a lot of hp with a cam. But i must say that MOST Hellcat cams have way too wide of an LSA. NO need for anything over 112. Ideally 108-110. Less duration and a tighter LSA will be a better cam.for max TQ which HP is a result of. Oh well. Degree those cams properly and that ZX10R will be fine
