All the coders, graphics artists, musicians who gave us these gems deserve the highest consideration and ... love ! Happy new year to all of you, and big thanks.
OMG! The creativity ! How can they make the games look so different and so unique on such a limited platform ! Today's open world games look all the same, but here the variety is astonishing ! Monochrome, colored, multicolored, 128K music, 48K music, w/scrolling, single scrolling.... Amazing stuff 😲
Armand Q. Well we are talking apples and oranges, all the best open world games are completely unique, but I too am very impressed over the level of diversity and creativity on the minimalistic platform
"Omelettes for Breakfast" features the "Sonderzug nach Pankow" by Udo Lindenberg, a song which mocked the German Democratic Republic and its political leader Erich Honecker. The song became wildly popular once more here in Germany when the Wall came down back in 1989 and 1990. Surely used with kind permission by Panic Udo! ;-)
Really surprises me to see the amount of creativity in a lot of these games. Kind of reminds me of some of the games from the so called Golden Era of Arcade Games. Also some really, really good often a bit whacky music as well. Good to see that the ZX Spectrum "retro" scene is so vibrant.
Except for the community, who is more immature and negative than ever, i love the state of modern gaming! I have access to all the classic games i used to love in the 80s, 90s and 00s, indie devs are bringing tons of new ideas and new versions of classic genres, AAA games are huge and finally look like Pixar movies, VR is here and it's better than my most optimistic predictions, and finally, people still program for all classic systems like Spectrum, Amiga, etc, etc!
The deadline for the ZX-Dev Conversions 2017 contest is at the end of January, and some truely amazing titles is on the way: Mighty Final Fight, Bobby Carrot, Gandalf, Ninja Gaiden Shadow Warriors and Extruder :-) :-)
Incredible! I think it’s time I bought a Spectrum computer. My question is: can you buy these games on floppy/cartridge or can you buy a digital copy, and then download said game to a flash cart to play on real hardware?
There are interfaces like the Divide 2k14 built by lotharek from Poland. These interfaces allow you to use .tap or .tzx files in order to play any game on the original hardware. Storage media are Compact Flash or SD cards, depending on the interface. Another source would be divide.speccy.cz/ Another hardware would be "DivMMC Enjoy! Pro One Interface". This list is by no means complete...
I have a 128k toastrack and a DivMMC. This device can load Tap, Trd, Sna and Z80 files from SD card which is pretty much all formats you need. Almost all the games can be downloaded for free in one of those formats from this site: spectrumcomputing.co.uk/
If you have the digital download, then you don't need any additional hardware to play it on your Spectrum, just play the tape file as audio into the Spectrum's EAR port.
Actually development never stopped for the ZX Spectrum: 1982-2016: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jLN4WhGruUY.html 2018: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x6FckGQTRII.html
The Sword of Ianna looks like a work of art, pure genius. Left me rubbing my eyes, it just fascinates me people are still making great games for the Spectrum.
I have always wondered whether these modern ZX games really make use of the same machines we used to play with. The power of these look so far superior.
Honestly, I had no idea people still made games for this, never mind this many awesome ones.... it’s seems like a great platform for creators to test their metal, makes me want to find a Zx spectrum myself.
I also have one of these, it is Spectrum compatible, and it is a shame it is not more alive than it is. There is some videos with games and demos for it on this channel.
I think most of the games and demos are made in programs on a PC and tested in an emulator program, but it is getting quite popular to set up a ZX Spectrum, C64, Amiga, Amstrad CPC etc again. I test the stuff in emulators and if I find it any good I put it on my CF/SD card and run it on my real Spectrum :-)
The 128k have an AY sound chip, and you can also get this as a sound interface for the 48k. This works quite good because then there is 3 AY channels for music and 3 beeper channels for sound fx, so the music can play uninterupted.
Here you can see a 128k game with an intro with stunning music, and ingame AY music supported by beeper fx so the music plays uninterrupted: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-unC119j2tQs.html
The graphics in The Sword of Ianna make me think of what Final Fight and Pitfighter could've been back in the day. I know of the new Mighty Final Fight game, but The Sword of Ianna shows good size characters with good speed and good animation.
