Now that’s some deep blues from Billy Gibbons! This is a whole other side of ZZ Top that not everyone is aware of. They could play the blues with the best of them for sure.
Those of us who grew up in SE Texas did. I say that because for the first few albums they were more of a Texas regional band. The rest of the world did not yet know what they were missing.
Talk about a laid back song. A glass of sipping whiskey, in a dark room leaning back in a rocking chair, with nothing but the sound of a fire in the fireplace. Lights off. just fire light and shadows. Oh yeah.
48 years playing guitar here. I can't lay it on ZZ getting me going. That belongs to Dickey Betts of Alman Brothers, but ZZ was a good 3rd or 4th reason.

Have seen them live in 1986 when I was 11, my first ever live performance, I will never forget that one, on my dad shoulders watching ZZ top live!! Even then I liked their early stuff the most, I think my parents taught me to listen to real music, still grateful for that! Now at 45 I still let the neighbours listen to ZZ Top and let them enjoy that little old band from Texas. ZZ still rocks today!
this is without a doubt my favorite Billy Gibbons guitar playing and singing. There is no better guitar tone out there . his phrasing, his touch on the strings, the tone, everything is just perfect.

You need to get into the classic 12 bar blues artists: john lee hooker, muddy waters, bo diddley, and howlin wolf. These are THE blues giants that the rockers like zz top were emulating.
Gotta love ZZ Top. Billy Gibbons toured with Hendrix back in the day. If you want to hear an amazing blues track check out Peter Green - Fool no More. It's mind blowing.
Them early ZZ Top years is amazing! So basic, so raw and so real. The vibe is there! Play'em loud and in headphones and it's almost better than....well, perhaps not, but "Lawd how happy could one man be" :)

The first time I heard this song it was an 8 track, in 1975, out in the Mojave Desert at night. I was a 17 year old Marine. I had the same EXACT spiritual reaction that you did, my friend. I LOVE seeing you hear some of the music that changed my life. Keep the videos coming. Much love, brother!!!

I was born in the 70's started liking ZZ in the early 80's when I saw TV Dinner on MTV. Didn't get into their earlier stuff until the 90's a regret I still have in the 2000's, lol.
Im telling ya ZZtop- Rough Boy...is a classic rock/blues Ballard that you will love also. Underrated album that has that 80s sound that is well done. Also the video had mind blowing effects for that time.

I would give you a personal story of this song. I am far away from home, in the middle of the antlantic ocean at the bridge of cargo ship alone. It was night the sea was calm and the sky so clear that stars where so many and so low that touched the horizon and then this song plays in loop at backround. True story and one of my great nights ever. Simple but so magestic like the actual song itself

In the lovely key of B minor pentatonic. 1st heard this somewheres around '85 and have had calluses on my fingers since, knowing I had to know how to play this blues classic.
Blues is such a uniquely american style of music, its a shame its children in rock and rap have forgotten these roots. We need Blues back into Blues based music!

As a drummer this is one of the hardest songs to play and sing. Because you FEEL this shit!! I first played it right after my divorce, cried everytime I played it.
Saw these guy's way back in 77, believe Elvin Bishop opened for them, this was pre beard ZZ Top, even then these guy's were in another world, then seen them 20 years later, these guy's evolved into a great power trio, love the Top, RIP Dusty.
A friend I used to work with used to tell me that the kind of blues I liked was "that over the bridge Blues." He was a big fan of blues too, but he preferred the faster blues. I preferred that guitar crying.

Saw these guys back in 81. It took me days to wind down after the concert. And a few more days to get my hearing back. There is no other band like them.
