I've only got one. The 50th Anniversary one. I had to have that. Was thinking of getting the 60th Anniversary one but it seemed too bare bones on special features, compared with the 50th.

I’m glad we don’t get answers for everything. I don’t feel cheated because I always assumed Mrs Flood was going to be a longer term mystery. Along with “The Boss” I like it when arcs go over multiple seasons. Was one of the things I really liked about Moffat’s era.

I didn’t think we would have everything revealed. I was upset that the interviews painted this to be the end of arc. The danger with dragging the plots on for too long is they loose that excitement and start to feel like it was never thought through in the first place. Hopefully miss flood will be a focus next year.

The legend of Ruby Sunday - It was a good introductory episode for the last episode of the season, where the end of the episode did its job of creating excitement and tension to look forward to the next episode and gave high expectations. As someone who hasn't fully watched the classic era and not knowing about Sutekh before, I still thought his introduction was excellent and it was exciting. The empire of death - Overall not a bad episode although I do feel there were questions and inconsistencies throughout the episode. I feel that Sutekh was not used correctly and did not show his true potential. (I don't know how he was in the past) About the mom's revelation. I understand what the message they wanted to give, but I don't buy it ..... 😆 If RTD thinks that the mom was very important just because we fans gave her that importance, he is very wrong. They were the ones who gave it that importance as it was one of the important (if not the most important) point around that season and it wasn't just the question "Who is Ruby's mom?" but it was snowing around Ruby, the music, Maestro mentioned that there was something wrong with Ruby, Suketh came out of hiding just because there was something wrong with Ruby's mom. So they just gave us an ending with no explanations (again). Extra comments: - In my opinion 73 yards episode and the mom's revelation felt with the same sentiment: good development with a confusing ending with no unanswered questions. - I am impressed that they have released the season finale at the cinema in England (I would have liked to see it in the cinema :c) but I am more impressed by the message they gave, I am given to understand that this may not be the end of the mystery about Ruby. If that's the case, I do find it a bit disappointing as this finale left a bad taste. I would even go so far as to say that they seem to be using it as a hook to keep the audience watching the next season (I hope they're not doing that). It seems that "The One Who Waits" is the audience :/ I have several comments on that season that can create discussions (which can be positive as well as negative), but overall it was a decent season... What we gain from this ending are memes of people pointing out address names and random ads as options for naming the babies. .... The Legend of No Smoking.... my favorite 🤣 At the end of the day I love Doctor Who so my excitement for the special and the second season starts from the end of the last episode...

The finale had lots of potential, but very rushed (that goes for the whole series, really). I think they absolutely cheated the audience, with the build-up of the "mystery" of Ruby and her origins... and no, it wasn't "the audience" that bigged-it-up - that was absolutely RTD et al. I do think they wanted to have some big thing, but then didn't know what, or how to do it... so they bottled it. They built it up to be bigger than they could deliver, and then blamed the audience when they couldn't deliver what they made us expect to have... and that was a very poor thing to do... and did very poor service to Ncuti and Millie... because they are going to bear the brunt of the audience dissatisfaction. It has echoes of Jodie... could have been a great Doctor, but was very let down by the programme makers. We don't need that scenario again, thank you! Deliver what you say you are going to deliver, or don't make promises that you can't keep. In the finale, there were holes everywhere, and things that just made no sense... for example, why would Ruby's Mum point to a road sign, indicating that that was the name she wanted the baby to have, when there was only the Doctor there... and she barely even seemed to notice him - it wasn't the Doctor she was pointing at, it was the sign - so just who was she "telling"?. If you think about it, the Doctor didn't tell anyone that the mother pointed at the road sign (and indeed, he hadn't remembered that himself)... so, no... it wasn't the mother who gave Ruby her name - it *was* the Social Workers (or whoever) as Ruby had originally assumed... so as a "sweet little story point", which I'm sure it was supposed to be, it just doesn't work. Wouldn't it have made more sense to leave a note with the baby? The idea of taking the dog for a walk (putting Sutekh on a lead and dragging him through the time vortex) was fun... but he has been attached to the Tardis for years (apparently), travelling through the vortex all that time, which served to help him evolve and grow his powers... so how that was supposed to kill him, wasn't really that well thought out Although, thinking about it, Sutekh only died when we was "cut off" from the Tardis, and the Tardis does have a "force field" around it, which protected Capt Jack, when he clung on to it... so maybe that did make some sense, after all!? The second Tardis turning-up in the "Time Window" which was made real *somehow* (instead of just being an image/hologram), and that became the Memory Tardis (or Memory of the Tardis), was somewhat contrived... probably just as bad an hitting the original Tardis with a hammer, causing it to create a duplicate of itself, in one of the specials. I struggled with understanding how killing Sutekh like that, would "reset" everything that he had done... but then I thought about the "Time Vortex" part of it... so maybe, by killing Sutekh that way, it meant that all the killing, just kind of didn't happen (it rippled back through time, erasing events from the timeline, maybe)... but if that was the case, surely the "seeding" of the Susan Twist characters everywhere that the Doctor either... and yet, Susan Triad was still there, at the end!? Also, if all that he had done was just "erased" from the timeline, then no-one would remember it... but it was indicated that they all remembered dying. I was fine with the idea that Ruby was just an ordinary person, after all. Maybe I'm a little disappointed that there wasn't more to it, given how the "mystery" was hyped-up - but thinking ahead, I'm kind of glad that she is just an ordinary human being (as anything else might be a bit of a complication for the future). Except... the Doctor "explained" that the reason why Ruby's Mum was a mystery and seemed "important" or "special" was because they (and we, as an audience) made her seem that way. Really? Well, no!!! It's clearly not true. So a god-like being (such as Sutekh was supposed to be) would not only be sucked into that way of thinking, but also not be able to see through the guff and realise that Ruby's Mum was just an ordinary person... and would be so invested in the mystery that he "waited" for the mystery to be resolved by the Doctor!?!? Maestro commented that Ruby was special because of the magical "song" that was within her... then she was able to project her older self (ghost) back in time, to undo a whole timeline (although there was an attempt of an explanation, about the 73 yards business, being something to do with the Tardis' perception filter)... then there was the snow, and a few other things, that were all put in the stories to *suggest* that Ruby was something special, and had some kind of "power". And... did anyone ever tell Davina McColl that they discovered who Ruby's parents were!? LOL But... it was just a TV programme, so I enjoyed it for what it was, and probably won't worry about it too much.

What an interesting and devise finale. As a Sutekh mega fan (i let out a gigantic scream when he was revealed), i thought LORS was one of the best part 1 finale episodes, and it got me so incredibly hyped for Empire of Death (because it was going to be everything I want from a finale), I gave it a 9/10 on my personal rankings. Just a shame that it was a let down for me. I enjoyed everything up to the Doctor getting the spoon. Everything after his breakdown in the tardis was really bad. The way they beat Sutekh was a major let down, and the mystery of Ruby's mum has annoyed me beyond belief because why hype her up....to be a regular woman. I get the symbolism behind it, but it just doesn't work for me. I feel like this would have benefited majorly from a 3 parter, because then Sutekh could have been built up as this major threat for more than a combined 5 minutes. I just feel like Russell had great ideas but didn't know how to put them all together. However, this ep did make me so much more intrigued into the Mrs Flood mystery, i personally think she's going to be the God of Stories, overall I gave EoD a 5/10, which really disappoints me because i really wanted it to be great

I have some thoughts about the episode: - It seemed like the episode was more about the love story than the plot with the villains. - The love story developed too quickly in one episode (they almost wanted to get married and have kids in that same episode). - I feel like the shapeshifting enemies could have had more potential. Although in my opinion wanting to be the most interesting person in the room and their plan for world domination didn't have much of a connection. - I did expect a little more from the episode as mentioned this episode and the Devil's chord episode were the ones that were promoted the most. - Tell me I wasn't the only one who thought they introduced Rogue to be the new “Jack Harkness”. A recurring character in the series. I don't know why when I was watching the episode that idea came to mind (for me they would have done that). - I feel like Rogue was a one episode person, since he was sent to another unknown dimension and if it seems impossible for him to come back (in a logical way because they can bring him back anyway). - In my opinion the ending was somewhat predictable and was confirmed when they set up the trap for 6. Scene to highlight: Ruby fighting to Lady gaga music (it was radom).

I may be in the minority for this episode, but I think is one of the weakest episodes of the season. I wasn't a fan of Rogue, and the love story because it just happened out of nowhere, this maybe would have maybe benefited from being a two parter or just having that 1 hour runtime. I also really wasn't a fan of the villains, thought their plan was a bit weak. I don't think this is worse than space babies, but it's not in the top 3 for me, but i may change my views after a rewatch

I think what resonates the most to me about this scene is that, as someone who has fought depression their whole life is that the doctor gave Vincent the one thing he wanted more than anything, that i and I'm sure many when crippling depression. He showed him that he was worth a damn. That his life had purpose and the darkness and the self hated wasn't all he was. That the night will eventual give way to dawn

You say that the twist isn't explored, but I think you're wrong. The whole episode is the exploration, once it's been recontextualised by the twist. It's about parasocial relationships, and how the version of influencers we see is carefully curated, not actually representative of who they really are As for whether the Doctor's "hero complex" would result in him "saving them whether they like it or not".... we already have that answer, too. He didn't. Regardless of their reasoning, he accepted their choice and let them go to their deaths You also missed the first big twist of the episode. That it WASN'T just the kids. That everyone on the homeworld was already dead, everyone of every generation falling victim to the same enemy
@CulturePhilter
@CulturePhilter 2 месяца назад
I don’t think the fact that homeworld suffered the same fate takes away from the fact that the particular behaviors and reliance on the Dot and Bubble were only shown as being a young persons thing. Maybe they were the same on homeworld but maybe the dots were used in a less reliant way there. It’s by no means an episode ruining issue - the other stuff is still really strong, but I can’t help but feel it would have been better if the society on FineTime specifically had been more mixed in generational representation.

"id love to see him running down some corridors", well said Dan. Who would've guessed the one thing doctor who would be missing was that 😂. I actually really liked this one, I just feel that this season hasn't really FELT like doctor who. And I don't really like all the supernatural stuff that this season has done. Like 73 yards and The Devils Chord. But, there have been stand out episodes for me, primarily Boom and Dot and Bubble. But this episode definitely reminded me of the black mirror episode "Nosedive". Despite this, I still surprisingly enjoyed this episode and I can't wait to see what the rest of the season has to offer.

Its depressing that, as soon as I noticed there were mostly white people in the episode, I knew it would be for a negative reason. RTD would never allow that many whiteys in his episode, without it having negative connotations.

I'm afraid that I think that you have misunderstood large parts of this story - and I think that is because you were so fixed on being offended because it seemed to be criticising "younger people" (and particularly those who are in a certain "social strata") - people closer to your own age group and background, so you decided to feel a little "attacked", personally.... and that then skewed your view of the whole story. Yes, stereotypes are "bad" - but they exist for a reason. Like some myths, there is an element of truth within... and they can be a quick way to get a point across, which can be important if you only have a limited amount of time in an episode. The idea of not even being able to walk, if you weren't in the "Bubble" was a bit silly, and at first I thought that it was ridiculous - but I think it was just an exaggerated way to express, in a short time, how much their society had become actually dependant on the technology. "You can't even walk, if the Bubble doesn't tell you how to"... kind of thing. I could hear parents saying that to their kids, today... not because they actually believed it would be true - a bit like "If the wind changes, your face will stay like that". It's not meant to be taken literally! But it is exaggerated in the story, to make a point, and to provide an obstacle to the characters, slowing down their escape, to provide some light tension in the plot. A few points... I think that it was fairly clear that Lindy wasn't a "nice" person, from the start (and it wasn't to do with her age) - the sense of entitlement, and the level of self absorption, was there from the beginning... not just with Lindy, but most of her friends, too. RTD has said that this is an idea that he had over 15 years ago, but wasn't able to make it back then (or something like that), so the basis of it might feel a little dated - but the cautionary tale of the over reliance on being in your own "tech bubble" and more concerned with how many "likes" you get on social media, over being aware of what is happening in "the real world", which might be more important than watching your umpteenth "Make-up tutorial", is still very much a thing! If this had been made 15 years ago, then Lindy and her peers would be 15 years older now - and *still* be in their bubble, if you see what I mean. So, yes, it may be the "older-than-teenagers" that, today, are the ones in our "real world" who are addicted to the social media bubble - but that is part of the point that is being made. They were addicted 15 years ago, and they still are now - and so their offspring are learning from that example - and YES, the "younger people" who are coming-up behind them, are still doing it too! Additionally, it was made fairly clear in the story that it wasn't only the "young people" who were obsessed with being in their bubbles. Lindy's mother was too, and when we see that the entire "home world" had also been wiped out by the slug-things, that's an indication that the same "invasion" had happened there, for the same reason. The other moral lesson - their objection to the Doctor's "difference"... it is very heavily implied that it is because of the colour of his skin - but it isn't explicitly said, and I think that was quite clever. The Doctor had already indicated that he was "interested" in Ricky September (and he might have said other things whilst around the others that made it to that "safe area") - so the "difference" that they were objecting to, might have been his sexuality. It could have been just that the Doctor (and Ruby) seemed to be from a "lower" social strata.... or just the fact that he wasn't on their "friends list", and so was judged as not being worthy - like the poor "P-surnamed girl" who was on the list immediately in front of Lindy, who Lindy had never encountered before, and probably would never have spoken to, if it hadn't have been for the fact that she was the next victim, prior to Lindy herself. It could just have been that both the Doctor and Ruby didn't fit the narrow confines of what their society regards as aesthetically attractive, or specifically with regard to the Doctor, it could have been that he was simply "older" than them - I don't think that the Doctor's moustache was an accidental choice... it was there to make him look older, for a reason. In fact, the point was mostly about his skin colour, I'm sure, but it could easily have been anything that was different to them. In our "Real World", there are many people around who seem to have the opinion that anyone who is different, for a variety of reasons - race, religion, educational achievement, disability, social background, age, attractiveness, health/fitness level, whatever - is somehow considered to be a "lower life-form" just because they *are* different (and unfortunately, in some circles, that kind of way of thinking seems to be growing. *That's* why this story is *still* relevant, and maybe even more so. In any event, if Chinball had written this story, the Doctor would have been carrying 2 wet kippers around with him in his pockets (because it was often something that Jodie had in her pocket, from the start, that solved the problem). One would have "Racism" clearly written on it, and the other would have "Social media self-absorption" written on it, and the Doctor would have saved the day by slapping everyone around the face with both wet-kippers, and they would have seen the light, and their society would have been changed, and the people saved from themselves (and the slug-things would die, because they are allergic to kippers). It wasn't a perfect story, perfectly written - but it was a much better way of getting the "social commentary" in. So much was said (especially by the Doctor and Ruby... but also by the other characters) by not saying the quiet bit out loud. And so, I think a second viewing, for those who need it, might help to make the episode make more sense, overall.

Oh, I think you might have missed the point of the episode. Respectfully, this episode's about racism. Consider rewatching it thinking about it from that perspective. Notice how everyone in the episode looks and how all the characters respond to the doctor. And also consider what the doctor must be thinking at the end as his first incarnation as a black man. The whole thing about living in a bubble is a side plot or a red herring. This was a very clever episode.

@@AlexAndersAuthor RTD said about the episode that it was 100% about race which is why he purposefully cast only white actors. He said he did that to see if the audience would notice that there were ONLY white characters in the episode. He said how long will it take the auidiecne to realise that it is ONLY white people? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? If you didn't notice at all - then why not? He has put out a 'metric' by this episode for peolpe to be judge by. If you are saying you did not notice the episode was specifically about race then you have failed RTD's test and you need to ask yourself why you did not notice it was about race. He is straight up baiting the audience now. I truly think he has lost the plot and is engaging in some wierd powertrip fantasy.
@AlexAndersAuthor
@AlexAndersAuthor 2 месяца назад
@@count69 That's very interesting! Thank you for sharing that. But, here's the thing. There have been many past episodes where the cast of Doctor Who was all white. For a long time, that was just a TV norm. And every so often, an episode of television reverts back to that. So, I registered that the cast was feeling very white and that the doctor, as a black man, was standing out. But I didn't, in any way, register that it was the point of the episode. I also felt all the microaggressions. But, again, that's often the norm and can be interpreted in a number of ways. Even at the end I questioned whether or not they were talking about race because so many other stories explain behavior like that away as other things. So, if the episode could be so subtle as to not register in my brain, a person who notices the lack of diversity and the way black characters are portrayed, I would call the episode clever.

I agree with you that the episode was too stereotypical, that it became ridiculous in my opinion. One of the things that was ridiculous to me was the fact that she couldn't walk without the arrows because at the end of the day she was still walking on her own not that there was anything that would walk for her and I feel like this is where they wanted to give a message that technology was bad but to me it was a ridiculous way, plus she hit a pole twice. I think at the beginning we all expected that Lindy and the survivors would realise at the end of the episode that the way they were using the technology was wrong and that we were going to have a happy ending, but I liked that plot twist and that at the end of the day there are bad people or that some people are foolish and don't want to listen. That kind of writing is very much appreciated. I have to mention that my favourite scene was when Lindy mentions Ricky's real surname to me it was an excellent scene (even the Daleks didn't dare to do that XD). About the ending, I also think there could have been more information about the Doctor and the survivors, but I feel it was well handled, I think at the end they implied the Doctor felt no remorse as he did try to convince them. In conclusion, for me it was a normal episode with ups and downs. And it could easily have been an episode of Black Mirror regardless of the Doctor and Ruby. I also feel the same way about the episode ‘43 Yards’, it could have been part of another series. (Did anyone notice that Lindy was suddenly able to walk, run, and go down stairs without any problem?)

Let's face it the whole script was written for 5 year olds. I agree that the whole racism issue was tackled badly. So a bunch of really horrible people are also racist why would any of us care or be surprised. I don't see what the point is other than the doctor will save them anyway but he doesn't. So let them die in their own ignorance who cares. It was their choice surely the doctor believes in free will?? Everybody knows racism is bad so really what is the point of this scene. The doctor will save you even if you are a twat? And of course it had to be a white person who was racist. Wouldn't it have been more interesting to have a whole black or Asian community in the bubble that turned out to be racist towards Millie because she was white? It would certainly make people realise that racism works the other way too. The messaging in Doctor Who these days is pretty pathetic and one way. There is no subtlety and it's immature.

Political messaging is evident, but character driven plots, character development and actual Scifi not so much. I'm hoping things improve and the actors are given scripts to show off their talents. Hi Dan! Not come across your videos before... first time viewer here :-) I know what you mean... I wish that they had more confidence in this series of Doctor who, and had commissioned more episodes, which would have allowed more of the stories to be told as two-parters. I think that this story is a perfect example of that. I think we could have enjoyed more of an "explanation", by having this story split over two episodes, and really seeing some more detail about why that "Prime Minister" had to be stopped - that would definitely have given it more impact, and a good payoff for the viewer investment into the story. I think part of the "open to interpretation" excuse is actually down to the fact that they started with a great idea, but weren't sure how to detail some of the plot points... so they just didn't bother... leaving the viewer to wonder about it, and make-up their own filler-bits. That way, they make it seem a more "clever" story, than it really is.... and if the viewer doesn't get it, then that's the viewers fault, not the production team's. Thanks for a balanced review... and you are very easy on the eye ;-), so no doubt I will be back :-)

I totally agree with this comment. It was a very good episode. But as the episode went on, I was expecting to see a big finale that explained everything that happened, but we got that plot twist (it's still shocking). However, there were many unanswered questions that seem to be left for us fans to answer, such as: How did Ruby become the old woman and travel back in time, or why did the Doctor disappear? Many fans say that we have to be open-minded and draw our conclusions otherwise you didn't understand the episode, but for me an episode should have been like that and they should have given an official explanation, because leaving that to the fans doesn't make sense to me. In my opinion everything that happened was part of Ruby's powers. And I hope everything will make more sense when Ruby's secrets are discovered.

I'll give you why it took so long to develop. The idea was solid enough but the time to explore it was too short for the run time. So they had to pad it out. The only scene I have seen was about 20 seconds too long on the pitch. They tried to do suspense but kept breaking it with all the cutaways.

This episode was good. I agree that the 3 previous episodes felt different from this one, this one felt more tense and serious (I thought we weren't going to have that). It's funny that it didn't need several scenarios to have a good story. I liked that we could feel the doctor's stress, since he had no control over what was going on. I don't know why, but I liked Ncuti's face in his “Life is cheap” speech. And when Ruby gets shot, at that moment you felt the Doctor's stress 100% and he couldn't do anything.

This episode was brilliant. Ncuti put in a great performance, and it felt like his arrival as the doctor. I genuinely didn't think they'd be able to get so much tension out of the premise but they did it masterfully. Definitely one of the best episodes since Heaven Sent, Moffat proving once again that when he's not showrunner, he can write masterpieces. Best episode of Ncuti"s run so far, and it may stay that way for a while

My opinion on the episodes: 1. Space babies. I thought it was a normal episode with a regular story, not so special. The truth is that the idea of having babies that talk was a bad idea for me from the first moment the first baby appeared. I liked the design of the monster. But overall it was a good episode. 2. The devil's chord. I liked this episode, entertaining from start to end. The Beatles showed up! although they didn't have as much presence as other historical characters in other episodes. The Maestro was fantastic throughout the episode and she had proved that she was powerful and could be scary (something the toymaker for me didn't show, he was more of a spectacle). One of my favorite scenes was when the Doctor and Ruby changed clothes. But I wasn't too convinced by the musical at the end. I like that every episode they keep throwing in unanswered questions and mystery (Who is the one wait? Amy , is that you?!). Fun fact: My first language is Spanish and when she said her name was ‘Maestro’, I thought the Maestro was ‘The Master’ as that means "Master" in Spanish, so until the Doctor said she was staying with the legion of the Toymaker I thought the Maestro was the Master haha.

They should have committed to the idea a little more. I agree. Originally I was going to show my friends those first two, but I’m not sure what they’ll think of me if they sing a really grating song

I agree with you fully, Maestros articulation and play with tone was awesome and menacing, and I hated the musical number, it was unbelievable, no reason, it wasnt magic, id have saved that for dvd or behind the scenes maybe, didnt need a heavy ending but youre right I wanted more contemplation on the legions, the doctor has just realized he is up against 'gods', maybe we will see more of that soon, the time jump to july was a bit weird too but we will see, im so happy its back and that youre covering it again with such honesty and personal reflection unlike many other reviewers. I like the new magicness, I didnt think I would but its interesting. Thanks again for your thoughts, keep up the good work.

So glad it's finally back! Gotta say, Space Babies was a decent opener, I'm glad it wasn't a 50 minute intense world ending episode and just a bit of comedic fun. Devil's Chord however was bloody great, Jinx was fantastic as Maestro, and I loved the link back to the Toymaker and episode by episode I'm getting more hyped about the One Who Waits. I thought Ncuti was incredible and can't wait for more
