I think you should react to the original version of "true blue." If you search for it here on youtube, there's a version of billie performing the song live somewhere. She looks like she's like 14 years old'ish in the video. But it's so good.
I've read that "l'amour De Ma Vie" is about 2 different people. But I could be wrong. I don't remember Jesse immediately moving on, but I remember seeing that when Billie and Matthew broke up, he seemed to have had a new girl almost immediately. I could be totally wrong. But the song could be about both of them.
"the greatest" - one of billie's and finneas's best songs. Billie has said that this song is the heart of the album. It's the ultimate people pleaser's anthem.
Also. I realised I commented on every single song except lunch. That cannot stand. 😂 I love lunch as a song so much, but I do think it stands out a bit from the storyline of the album, both lunch and the diner. They feel like subplots, like they do make sense within the emotional arc, like little side quests that eventually do have an impact on the main quest. I mean, I think of it this way: both the diner and lunch present a kind of external force impacting the main theme. Realising one wants to “have my face in a vagina” as Billie has phrased it in an interview about lunch, definitely did motivate me to break up with my then boyfriend a decade ago (and I’m married to another woman now so ya know, I get it). But I would imagine that having a delusional stalker who writes in letters that if something happens to her partner it would be because of this stalker, can’t be easy on a relationship either. So as much as I’m like yes girl come over to the gay side we have cookies (and coochies lol), and bop and dance to the song that is obviously perfect, I can still acknowledge that in the context of the story set up by the album through an emotional and thematic arc, these two songs can be considered incisions into the main idea. Which makes it so much more dynamic and real and they are juxtaposed within the album structure as well. But to go back to the song itself. That car zooming past during the headlights line?! So good. Like the crowd when stepping off the stage in skinny. And the fact that “lunch” as a title follows “skinny” isn’t lost on me either. 😏 “Been trying hard not to over eat” (throwback to the theme) “but you’re so sweet” (double entendre). Listen, I could rant about Billie’s music until I go blue in the face (ha. Blue.) but I’m going to stop now before I turn this comment section into a rant session more than I already have done 😅
Oh my god wait both lunch and the diner are also the meal related songs! Skinny thematically is related food wise but they’re not meals. So in that context, meals can feel intrusive when trying not to over eat. Please I can’t take any more of these perfecy fitting conceptual layers Billie 😅
I agree with your assessment at the end, their quality is just on another level. Something structurally that I also noticed is how there’s a sense of an increase in dynamics. I mean, I kind of get a sense of the Fibonacci sequence in not only this album but actually even across her entire discography, in terms of the song structure in particular. Do you see it? The fractions, the embedded soundscapes, they increase. And it feels fractually balanced in the same way it is in nature. Anyway, I also like that if one pays attention there are similarities between the album structures. Like, the diner recalls NDA, but so does Bittersuite (setting up the recall of certain previous lyrics of the album but sporadically rather than in a cluster), then blue recalls male fantasy with the concept of an end, the end of the album, the end of a relationship, and not wanting it to end, the concept of not being over someone (or something, like the album) yet even though one might have deluded oneself that one was. Having been through the anger (happier than ever) or depression (listen before I go) or bitterness (L’amour de ma vie and even Bittersuite in name) post breakup, which sets up the end of the album also. And obviously in the first album we get the set up in the song title sequence (listen before I go, I love you, goodbye), and the concept of the final song in that album is the full song rather than it being integrated into a song the way they’ve done for the other albums (which I think is better). The album structures follow a certain bell curve that is intensely satisfying. Like skinny sets up the album the way getting older does for the happier than ever album. And then you get the bad guy and lunch part, even happier than ever with the dogs growling in I didn’t change my number the fun after the contemplative (that comes with age, because in the first one it’s the most teenage adorable iconic laughter opener with a bang). I just really love how sophisticated yet genuine their creations are, while also being self aware. Like you said, they’re on their own level and they wouldn’t even need to go THIS hard to be successful but they do for their own sake. Now we just have to hope that the powers of the industry that be/ the public can keep up with their sophistication beyond pop. I’m hoping yes because Billie is both surprisingly popular for the level of quality, and yet somehow still underrated. You know what I mean?
I’m so obsessed with that transition in Bittersuite. I actually listen to that snippet of the transition on repeat for weeks. That beat in the second part has that Bossa nova feel and it’s such a clever detail because think about the concept of Billie Bossa Nova. It’s basically the concept of having an affair in hotel suits.
The Diner is so good I feel bad for liking it but it just slaaaaapssss and it’s so conceptually clever and it’s so creepy but it SOUNDS so good. Urgh damn her for making such a creepy concept so good.
There’s this detail in the way she chose to say the phrase in L’amour that I feel like so many people overlook and that is so specific, and best explained with referring to the greatest. When she sing “because FOR YOU I was the love of your life, rather than for example “because I was the love of your life” she’s very specifically phrasing it like “I chose to act in a way that made it so you were even able to view me as the love of your life but you never put that effort in to be what I want and need so the fact that you’re not the love of my life is on you really”. It’s like, “I did everything for you, you did nothing for me. I embodied what you needed, consciously, actively, I BECAME the love of your life FOR you. So obviously I am/ was the love of your life. You did nothing of the sort, no effort, you just took, so obviously you ARE not the embodiment of that role FOR me, which was your choice.” I think because to be is such a common and hidden verb, it gets overlooked in this context, but it’s so clever. She’s not just using it in a passive inherent emotion but in the context of a chosen, a deliberate act of being a role, and actively acting as such. Sorry this sounds so convoluted I’m making it so unnecessarily complicated I’m sorry but I’m trying to express why this specific line is so clever to me in a lyricist/ writer way. And it’s so hard to do because the verb being is so common! So I have to figure out ways to express what I’m trying to say without just repeating the danger of the word being taken in its common application. Maybe if I say, capital B being rather than just being. Anyway I’ll stop now. I hope you know what I mean.
The greatest is a little too relatable for me. How dare she. It’s my favourite song together with skinny and Chihiro. Like, they’re in the top spot scooching together on that podium. Urghhhh she’s so gooooooood
Wildflower used to be at kind of the bottom of my favourites from this album but since listening to her live version I’m obsessed with that song. I really recommend watching that (even if in your own time). I also thought that you totally fit the image of the girl she talks about in the song (happy and free in leather) 😊
Birds of a feather is nooooot wholesome 😅 it’s subliminally toxic af but one always forgets because it SOUNDS so frolicky and elated. But it has that contrast just how it is in reality. It feels like it sounds but it’s also so intensively possessive if one thinks about it, and the imagery is quite macabre, really, when one thinks about what is being said.
Your reaction to skinny has me snapping my fingers that song is soooo underrated and yes I get it, by the time one has listened to the entire album so much has happened but oh my god this song deserves so much more attention. It’s so beautiful
I’ve watched a lot of reactions to this album and you’ve gave me perspectives that are really fresh and that I wouldn’t have came up with myself. You also pick up on a lot of things almost nobody else seems to this first go around (Like you picked up the strings at the end of blue are also the same ones in skinny, they’re also the same strings in the greatest as well) if you wanna check out something live from her off this album please check out “The greatest” live on Stephen Colbert and or “Wildflower” live with Amazon song line, it is the first time she really utilized back up singers. She’s also put out three music videos for this album so far. I subscribed and will be tuning in girlie :)
Really enjoyed ur reaction! Big BiFi fan here. For me, this is Album of Year contender for sure, but awards can be fickle. 'Happier Than Ever' greatly deserved song of the year, imo. I kinda think this project may be a little too sophisticated for pop awards but definitely stands out as a masterclass of writing, production, and singing - and created by just 2 performers; not a room full of writers and producers that we see all over. Thanks again!!
I've watched a lot of these reactions, and I think you're the only one to realize that was Frank's gun she found. Also Nick Offerman won an emmy for that episode.
Personally, I prefer the theatrical cut. Yes, the special edition explains some things, but I generally a like a bit of mystery in my movies. However, I think I'm in the minority. 🙂
@@WallyHartshorn That’s fair enough, each to their own. I think the scene explaining that Ripley had a daughter should have been left in as it fleshes out her attachment to Newt (although the age of death has to be about 4 decades below average for the time). I also love the fact they actually used the back projection technique used for other action scenes like the drop ship crash as a way of making it look like the future had wall screens that could simulate gardens! A CGI concept done with physical techniques. You don’t need the auto cannon scenes but they’re in so many games people going back to the film might wonder what that was about but I can live with dropping them. Especially as we don’t really see anything and if they can’t get past the pressure door anyway. Why did you put them there? 😜 I mean - it thins out the heard but they have problems especially if you test them by throwing something in front of them that will just keep bouncing around waisting ammo! It’s Alien 3 that’s just a completely different Movie and actually very good if you watch the directors cut which I didn’t until fairly recently and it’s like watching a different film! Excellent pacing, and proper explanation where appropriate.
About the "Rain+Chains" scene, you saw how massive that ship was. Indoor stadiums and megachurches have their own weather systems. The loading docks of a ship that size would be the same. I have heard that managing this is a lucrative niche, something Weyland-Yutani would consider an unnessecary waste. They are always hiring...
Please watch the whole original tetralogy :) Everybody watches this one and Aliens (1986). Please, don't ignore last 2 movies (Alien 3, and Alien Ressurection). They're not bad movies, they just had a misfortune of being a follow-ups to some of the greatest SF/horror movies in the industry. Give 'em a chance :) 20:48 yep, you saw that right... Alien's tail went between her legs... There are numerous theories about Lambert's death. The most popular says that Alien didn't see her so much as a threath/prey, but more of a reproduction material. However, that theory is dismissed by the Aliens movie (won't spoil it)...
Absolutely correct. Alien 3 is actually a superb film if you watch the directors cut. It’s much better paced and everything is explained properly. And 4 isn’t bad too. It’s a bit “different”. But they were forced into a corner by the end of 3.
@@Beco96 little trivia for you which I think is true having seen it from a reliable source: Apparently the over the head shot Ripley makes in 4 was successful first take (she’d been practicing a lot) so everyone’s reactions were real! (Exactly what a director wants) and the sort of thing that separates the good actors from the great actors!
Two minutes in and Tim Minchin shows up (His song "Prejudice" asserts that only a Ginger can call another Ginger...Just check it out, it is great musicianship and wordplay). Not apologizing for that.
HAAAA!! 😅 Is smoking 🚬 on a spaceship still allowed anymore??!! We haven't accomplished YET yet!! Normally I don't watch reactions under 40 minutes because it usually means all the good quotes are cut out but this movie is mainly suspense. For ALIENS I beg your edit person Please keep in all the awesome quotes and cool dialogue. Like your style lady! I'll be watching for the next!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Assuming you have seen some star wars before, I think you would now enjoy Spaceballs. Mel Brooks does some amazing work, and Spaceballs is a great introduction to him.
Just found your channel. You are a lot of fun to watch with. I love your humor and the sounds/clips you add. It gives us a glimpse into your fun personality. I will be watching more with you. You have a new fan! Stay awesome.
You're right. Dallas was still alive. Not good. Read the novel, if you dare to find out what happened to him. There's a deleted scene, but it doesn't fully explain things. Ripley was trying to reverse the self-destruct because the Alien was blocking the entrance to the escape shuttle. The first three films are worth watching. After that it makes zero sense.
"Older movies"? Well, I suppose from your young eyes sure. BUT you should defiantly sink your teeth into the past more. We have had about 150 years of movies, not all the good ones have been in just last 20 years. For instance, watch "12 angry men" from 1957 and see how such a simple movie can grab you with its acting and writing.
I really hope you continue the franchise. Both the theatrical and special editions of Aliens are great in their own ways. I prefer the special edition. Definitely adds crucial information regarding certain characters and corporations. The lore expansion is exceptional. I think some of the early additional scenes really add to the suspense of the story. It's that contrast, you know? As for the rest, The Assembly Cut of ALIEN³ is absolutely the way to go. Studio interference led to huge creative differences between director David Fincher and 20th Century Fox. Sigourney herself backed Fincher and is credited as being a co-producer for the film. The Assembly Cut is not a directors' cut unfortunately but IMHO, a much more stylish and flowing film. The score is phenomenal as is the color palate creating an atmosphere as bleak and hopeless as ever. It is my 3rd favorite of the series, surprisingly. I also recommend watching the theatrical version of Alien: Resurrection. Ironically, this was my introduction to the series when I was 7 years old. Rented it on tape and was intrigued with questions of backstory. I also REALLY love Prometheus. Could just be due to my age, but it was the first Alien franchise film I saw in the Theater. I enjoy Covenant as well. As for the AVP films, I enjoyed the first but the 2nd is literally way too dark with the film grading and you can not see anything. Even in the theater with the lights dimmed it was like looking at a black screen with a tiny bit of blood here and there. Which is unfortunate because it could have been a fun time. Overall I recommend checking out all the films in the franchise so you can form your own opinion. AVP 1&2 optional. Look forward to more reactions!
How can you say its more popular then the first one. It surely is one of the best sequals to any movie, but its two totally different movies where both is critical aclaimed. The first one is more of a space horror, and the second one is more of a space action. Fans tend to say the first one is the better movie and the second one might be one of the best sequals in movie history. But no, i have never seen anywhere that people in general say the second one is more popular than the first one.
ALIEN is my all time favorite horror film. It scared the crap outta me in 1979. By all means watch ALIENS 1986 but…ignore the people trying to get you to watch the “special edition.” It is a far better film in the theatrical version. The added scenes add nothing to the film and actually slow it down considerably. It’s just a bunch of exhibition that was TOTALLY unnecessary and was cut from the original version for good reasons.
The reason they couldn't just ignore the signal or leave before they truly explored was because of the clause in the contract. If they didn't investigate the signal, they weren't going to get paid for the shipping mission they were doing, since they are glorified space truckers. That's also why Kane kept investigating the egg despite the warning signs. He saw signs of organic life, which was one of the things they were sent to investigate. So when the egg opened, he moved his only light source, attached to his helmet, closer to the egg.
One of the only qualms I have with this movie is how they don’t make the parasite connection to the facehugger. The only reference is when Ash says it may be keeping Kane alive by feeding him oxygen. While it is an alien, and they know nothing about it (except for Ash), it presents itself in a classic parasite form by using Kane as a host. Yet when the facehugger sloughs off Kane and they find it dead, they’re fine with Kane just walking around like it’s all copacetic. The thought of a parasite having implanted something in Kane doesn’t even enter their minds, regardless of Ash. On another note, you’re half right about Dallas and not seeing his body. But you’ll have to watch the Sp. Ed. of Alien. It doesn’t impact the movie, it’s only about your ‘Dallas’ puzzlement.
The reason you don't see a full body shot of the Xenomorph until the end (it has about 4 total minutes of screentime) is because they couldn't figure out how to not make it look like a man in a suit.
