even though you published this 4 years ago, this video was very helpful in actually *reinforcing* why i want to become a librarian. i have a master of public health, so i'm coming directly from the systems thinking, public service approach. i love books but honestly reading is like, my 3rd favorite hobby. i'm transitioning from public health research to librarianship precisely *because* i want to be more of a direct public servant to my community, and librarianship seems like a great way to do that. thanks for this video!

Thank you for this video. I actually clicked on this knowing I want to work in archives and be an archivist, but I was curious about this because I do love libraries and care deeply for them. After watching this I am still sure that archives are the place for me- but I appreciate and am thankful for libraries to the deepest extent.

Oh gosh! I really appreciate your time for making this video cause I am much relate to you based on your experiences. I am poor too which is sad to say. The time I realized that this job suits me the best, I said to myself "I will take this! This job is for me! No backing off" .

I have been working as a library tech for 25 years now. I LOVE my job. I find the new comers having problems because the JOB is not fully explained to them. I suggest if you are going to apply for a elementary library job PLEASE visit a school and see what the person does BEFORE you take a job and regret it. Also I tried going to get a bachelor's degree in library science but was turned down because I DON'T have a teaching credential which I don't think is fair because I've been doing the job for 25 years.

I am currently thinking about changing profession. I dont really like reading books but I DO love information and giving people the right information og the most trustworthy and usefull information. Also communicating science etc. Could it be for me ? Or is it a must that I at least like to read?

The first point actually made me realize I want to be a librarian even more. I have some stubborn social anxiety and am an introvert, but democratizing information is something I’ve always felt very strongly about and even currently do everything I can to make information accessible to people who are in close proximity to me. I got nervous when I went online and saw that “strong customer service skills,” were a must to be a librarian cause I immediately got flashbacks to my retail jobs, but I think enduring that for something I’m so passionate about will make it worth it. I’m happy I watched this video. :)

I had to keep backtracking and re-listening to stuff you said because your doggo is adorable. Their face at 4:19 and their H E A V Y sigh at 6:07 is a mood that I can relate to. Now that I've gotten all my praise for your dog out of the way, I'm currently studying to be a Library Information Technician and this video is super-helpful! Mayhaps I shall subscribe and see what else you have to share! Thank you!

Hello, I am a Chinese who is preparing to resign and take the postgraduate entrance examination to major in library and information science, and I want to learn English. Can you recommend some English learning channels? The English learning channels I have found so far belong to exam-oriented education and cannot help. I understand English better, if you can provide it thank you very much!

I don't have an MLIS (or any college degree) and I am a Technical Services/Collection Management and Circulation Librarian. It is entirely dependent on the Library itself. I really suggest looking into the Library you're planning on working at since most public non-academic libraries, in my experience, are looking for experience in the field rather than degrees. A lot of positions have classes online through various means that the library themselves will pay for. The only issue you're going to run into is the pay isn't going to be the greatest. I'm paid around 18.50, which is well below what other TS Librarians in my state get paid (average around $26).

I really liked this video and the points that it touched on. I have been a professional librarian for 18 years now.I was lucky and got full time librarian job almost as soon as I graduated. One of the most frustrating aspects was that the pay was so low that for the first five years I almost always had a second job so I could pay my loans back and pay my rent. Sometimes supervisors would say things to the staff about how the professional staff had to handle the customer problems because they were making more money. It was annoying because if I subtracted the amount I was paying in student loans I was making about the same or less than the library assistants. I feel like I found my monjo or path in libraries by stepping back and having my children and working part time instead of fulltime. It allowed me to figure out what aspects I was truly interested in. I love creating programs and creative learning projects for the customers. Next year when my children are in school fulltime I would like to work on libraries part-time and blog or work in web design part time.

Your story speaks volumes to me, and you really inspire me, even though I realize this video is 4 years old. I was poor when I was growing up as well; but I didn't understand that until one Christmas when I was 13-14 someone from a church dropped off a box of shoes at my house. That simply act created a huge trauma for me. Well, as time went on, things changed. I actually got to go to college, got reasonably good grades, got to work in a library, even took a few library courses. Now, I'm retired, but am seriously considering going back to college for an MLIS degree.

I'm in high school and am still looking at colleges and career paths, I love research and I love helping people, I love every aspect of libraries from providing technology access to underprivileged peoples to helping college kids do research papers to being a spot for a kid to just sit and read. I really think that looking into librarianship could be a good fit for me but there aren't really any offerings for MLIS programs in my area let alone at the schools that excite me for non library reasons. So I'm kind of at a impasse, but I have all kinds of options for my future so who knows. We will see.

I had to laugh about some of the material being too available. I came across an original copy of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs' 6th book, Gladius furens (Raging Sword) in the regular stacks at the University Research Library at the University of California, Los Angeles. I checked out the book, took it home, and translated it in 1977.
