It's a rip off. Individual plugins may be ok, but it's a massive rip off. There are plenty of mastering chains that are better, just as good. I asked them how long of paying $14.99 a month and eventually, because it's completely hidden, they said 11 years. Fuck you Softube.
I can't imagine paying £60 for a compressor plugin these days. That just seems crazy, it's not like there's a deficit of LA2A or derivative type plugins for free or so, or that come with decent everyday DAW's. Softube are insanely overpriced as well. They're not shit and not revelatory, they're just way overpriced and for me, those days are long, long gone. No clients are coming to me asking for a Kiive or Softube plugin, absolutely none. I get clients asking for actual U87's, U67's, UAD 6176, Neve 1073's, LA2A's, CL1B'S but even then, that's fairly rare these days too, but I still get that often enough. I, nor any artist I've worked with, have ever heard the general paying public who buys and consumes music, ever mention or care about what gear is used, which is interesting when I hear not so great mixes, they just don't care and they sell quite a bit and do well. A good song with a bad mix will sell, so, who in their right mind is going to pay £60 for a cl1b knock off plugin? Yeah, I know who 🙂
So we need to pay incrementally more for Plugins that are demonstrably better. That seems reasonable eh. A developer makes a new plug, buyers pay for how much better it is than the last one they bought.
Kiive products are very nice and no nonsense. The compressor market is tough though so definitely demo it. Learn from my mistakes as I ended up with duplicates without really giving them a test. Decent price when on sale. Their Complexx 760 is a beast so if you're new to market, check out their stuff.
It's ironic that a show called "Is It Shit" is a breath of fresh air. I never get the feeling that you guys are eager (or even willing) to blow hot air up our asses. You are a witty, charming, and remarkably handsome lot. Thank you for being the better alternative to Mr. Snooty Pants (need I say more?).
Pretty pricey but still cheaper than the Softube, whether on sale or not. Gonna add this one to my black friday list. I love what this does on bass. Still waiting on Korneff's WoW!
Cranesong Phoenix recently got released for use on all DAWs. I know a lot of top producers (some I know well) swear by it. I’m price alone I can image your review but would love to hear your views on it. They offer a demo of 30 days to try it out.
"Have a little think, what do you really need?" That line should be posted on the webpage of every plugin developer. Like the guys said, it's a fine piece of software, but do I NEED it".
Yep, I thought this was meh when I first got the email... Not that I'm a mastering engineer but as I already own a host of softube plugins so I'd rather just do it myself. Or pay a good mastering engineer to do it for me.
Streaky said in a video once that you should never record or mix at 48khz. You should always do 44.1 or 96, because 48 “sounds bad”. That’s when I stopped listening to Streaky.
I reckon one of the advantages that plugins give us over analog gear is it's easy to visually represent what the heck is going on. To obfuscate it and then claim that it's just magic dust is properly lame as far as I can see. It's sort of lazy really - to withhold salient information from the user and go with 'ooh, it's a one-knob miracle' is just bollox frankly. So it's a low end pultec thing with some compression - how on earth would I use that if I cannot specifically dial in what i'm gong for? You know, if you're a novice then you're going to need MORE info, not less. Also you've got Rio Ferdinand's mouth.
Well done! I find you guys fun to watch the plugin review are a bonus you bunch of tight arses However seriously on one hand Streak teachers mastering then develops a bunch of plugins that hide the method? Quite confusing.
LULLZ! How many arse jokes can we fit into 5 minutes? I’m gonna be a tight arse and not buy any more plugins. But seriously, there’s a few in my toolbox that ‘do’ the bottom end: DeBoom by Eventide and the Smooth Operator. Slap my ass and call me a professional. 😅 Most entertaining music tech show on RU-vid.
It's a low frequency compressor. Bet all of your arses that it does this: Waves C4 -> disable all bands except the lowest -> tigh/loose: threshold -> crossover: obv -> release: obv -> big orange **knob** on the right: band gain. All of the above is a guess, but it's an educated guess out of my educated ass. I'd test it, but after Colourbox I can't be arsed.
Streakys plugins have always been these like mystery in a box plugins that essentially makes a preset of how he masters. I don’t like that they don’t explain what’s going on with the plugin, but I guess if you wanna quickly get a similar sound to streakys sound then they’re good. Otherwise meh
Demo'd the plugin and couldn't figure out how useful it would really be. I mean one could just listen with their ears and clean up the bottom end with an eq? Lol.
@@marksaxon Yep...if you know how to do the pultec trick and understand compression for low end...you don't need this. Useful if you're new to mixing though...or lazy.👍 😂
@@StudioLife101 I do love me some lazy plugins but this one is a solution in search of a problem. WA Production's Kickshaper is one of my favorite of the specialized low end "lazy" plugins.
@@StudioLife101 no effing and jeffing first seven seconds (swearing afterwards ok) suitable for all advertisers, youtube recommends it because they get my ad revenue, you get more subs, etc etc... might be wrong tho!
@@wouterdesmedt1736 The whole building was custom built from scratch last year. Tuned with corner bass traps and 100% rockwool wall baffles with gik acoustics cloud and low mid traps too. No standing waves and no nasty nodes... Was a bit pricey but easier when you design the walls from scratch.... Keeps the neighbours happy too! 👍 It's air-tight too...so aircon keeps me alive...😂
I really like what’s Softube doing, I got the older console 1 for years ago man sounds great especially SSL 9k and API Now it works with UAD and fab filter can stay away from the touchpad. I hear what your saying about the long payoff to own but a year of mastering with an arsenal plug-ins on this would be same price of 1 good plugin if you bought it.
I think this script and setup is dope. Ppl that are broke can spend 15 bucks a month and get some of the best software mastering chains in the game. And I like how easy it is to use universal controls for ballpark and then lock in with each plugin. Only request I had would to be able to sub in some different combinations on the order with the flow. I own all the softube stuff so not paying 15 but I appreciate how ppl can get quality for that.
I have a question: I reset my computer and re-installed just the plugin suites I really couldn't live without and, to be honest, include everything I could ever ask for to make a mix (and even master) To drop a name here: It is Meldaproduction's everything Bundle. Believe it or not, one of the most impressive plugins of the huge arsenal is the MWaveshaperMB (Multiband) as it is so insanely versatile. When I see you raving about FrontDaw (which tempts me to re-download it - I bought it years ago) I wonder if it really adds something I can't get from MwaveshaperMB. So my question is... Could you give MWaveshaperMB a thorough test run? (Beware though, there is a lot to look at.)🙏
The thing that makes this channel strip somehow unique is that bandwidth/Q changes dynamicly with the amount of boost or cut - like you mentioned around 5:00. So I think it is a good choice for some different "flavour". ;-)
Excellent demo of this unit and great explaining. Nice to hear a track that you've worked on (I assume). Can see why you love this unit, lots of dynamic control but still sounding slick. The expansion sounds like a trick I do with Fabfiler MB even if its not as goood 🙂
@@richertz The track is what I mix as part of my upcoming mixing course...😉 5 videos totalling over 3 hours of mixing with me...audio stems for this track included...coming soon..👍
Have this one, and picked up the Kiive Quick strip for drums on your recommendation, but have been using the Lindell API strip on drums usually. What would influence your decision to choose one over the other on drums in different contexts -- I know, the one that sounds best, but what would you be particularly listening for? Binge watching your content and have been well informed and entertained -- you've saved me some money, but made me spend some too -- but perhaps more wisely! Cheers!
@@markdineen3430 Glad you're enjoying the channel. 👍 It's different flavours really...I know SSL will get the the fastest and tightest result...API will have more warmth and work on more live sounding drums really well. Neve will really work when the recordings are very close already...wide Q settings and subtle saturation really add to the sound when it doesn't need much sculpting....you learn what works as you do more and more. 👍
@@StudioLife101 The producer I worked with most often would bring in racked API strips for drums and Neve for my bass when tracking into, most usually, an SSL or a Soundcraft, so I just always associated API with drums. True, lots of different sounds all sound good!
@@markdineen3430 Back in the analogue only days, I'd prefer to track on API or Neve and mix on SSL. Warm on the way in...precise in the mix...but usually those choices were made by default...bands/artists like certain studios and you use whatever is there. We're spoilt now with mixing rooms of our own for the most part.👍
@@StudioLife101 Indeed, in the old days we'd have to get up half an hour before we went to bed to go record in a cardboard box in the middle of the road, and the engineer would beat us with broken bottles to get us to play in tune, and we were happy to do it! -- kids these days don't know how lucky they've got it! 😋
I don't know if anyone mentioned it but Qx-Comp by PsychoCircuitry is based on this unit but with extended features...and it's free too. I had posted in a forum a year ago asking about if there was anything that could do the same and the guy sent me a message regarding a prototype he was working on at the time which eventually became this. It is currently being updated to a new code base so not on the main page, but there is still a link to the archived older version on Google (or I am sure he would send the link over if you were interested)
