I hate to say it, but with the advent of 3D printing and other technologies, it'd very conceivable that swarms like this could one day be real, just imagine scaling up say bacteriophage biochemistry as a single drone, an intelligent macroscopic bacteriophage like swarm akin to a genetically organised robotic technology
While visually stunning it was a complete waste of drones and power that would have been useful for Earth's defense in later seasons, which is probably the reason the writers blew their ammo in one shot
This was incredibly wasteful when you consider the effectiveness and scarcity of Ancient drones. We saw a Hatak go down to as little as 2, surely Anubis's ship could have fallen to a few dozen. Instead he goes for full overkill and depletes the supply so harshly that they have to take most of Atlantis's drones.
I like how losing two ships in season 2 was something that made him vulnerable but sacrificing whole fleet to shield himself is apparently fine. Yeah, I know he would take over Heru'ur's forces but how and why?
So nice when an episode introduces an ability for the bad guys that is mysteriously dropped without explanation despite it being a game changer. Cloaking a big ship never happens again until Atlantis or S10 even though S4 established Apophis / Sokar pulling it off right here in S4.
The Goa'uld don't share technology with each other so the technology and/or techniques required to construct a cloaking device capable of hiding a Ha'tak was lost after the death of Apophis in 2001, as no further Ha'taks were ever equipped with a cloak.
That jaffa of Apophis messed things up for Heru ur. He could have said an explosion happened but he screamed Heru ur attacks sort of sealed the deal while everyone else was confused
Jakob: "The Goa'uld have never been able to cloak an entire Mothership before. And now Apophis will easily be able to take over the galaxy." And then we never saw a single cloaked mothership EVER again! Hell, even Anubis didn't give them cloaking abilities!
I'm pretty sure Apophis lost this entire fleet to those mines. Which is a really big waste; the ships he gets from Heru'ur are about the same number he lost here, but they can't cloak. An invisible fleet is a lot more valuable. He should have just gone to war, he would have been better off.
Neither Apophis nor Her'ur were expecting to get f*cked over by SG-1. They planned to settle this peacefully. And while you're right, that Apophis lost a fleet of Ha'taks with cloaking abilities, it sort of compensates by the dozens of ships he'll get from Her'ur. And theoretically, Aphopis could have just retrofitted or built more cloaking Ha'taks.

Why heru ur don't activate the shield force of this hatak ship maybe he can escape with a stargate before the entire system was destroyed by a supernova
If SG1 didn't interfere and/or Teal'c had found a way to secretly escape, HERU'RU would be considered a more honorable system lord than Apophis in this particular scenario.
O’Neill: “And this is for Abydos, bitch!” Anubis: NOOOOOOOOOooooooo!!!!! (explosion) Jim: (smiling) Oh, I feel so happy! This is joyful! Now you can call me Jim the Fat Patron! Thank you, O’Neill, you changed my life forever.
Because they hadn't really thought out the drone idea in this intro to the drones had them using 1,000 times more drones here than say in fighting the Wraith or Replicator ships where only a couple drones were needed to destroy an Ancient design replicator ship
Not only that but they seem to have the ability to pick up and completely erase the supersoldier whilst in later seasons or on SGA they were simply explosive devices
The only problem I have is the power of drones. They obviously hadn't settled on how powerful they were yet. While it looks very cool and impressive to have what appears to be thousands if not tens of thousands of drones, Atlantis and later SG-1 show this was massive overkill. Guess it raises even more questions about drones. As you see them swarming the ships and punching right through multiple times. What does it take to use up a drone? If they are physically intact, can they be recovered and recharged? Did O'Neill just waste a shit ton of drones to really stick it to Anubis? Or Maybe these drones were not as powerful as the Pegasus counterparts? I guess over millions of years the drones could have been upgraded. But you see in Antartica when Atlantis leaves, they have Puddle Jumpers and such. Why did the Ancients stagnate so much?
I don’t think they stagnated to much it was like why make something better if what you have works. Most if not all have ancients most powerful weapons came during the war against the wraith. It does seem even with us it takes a war or a life and death situation to advance our tech as well. I just don’t think they had no need to to keep advancing there tech.
The Atlantis 'The Tower' (season 2, episode 15) had the drones being externally powered, so when they activated the main engines to drain the last drop of power from the 'king's castle, the drones lost power and fell out of the sky instead of killing the village.
