Hi Luke, First of all, I have to give you some praise. I'm a big fan of The eDrum Workshop and the videos you make! Maybe you could help me with the following question: In combination with a "drum-tec groovedot" trigger, which bass drum mesh head (20") would you recommend? The drum-tec "real feel" or "designer" mesh head? Thanks a lot, and keep up the great work! 😉 Frankie @TheeDrumWorkshop

Brilliant, I do watch your clips but, they have a lot packed into them and sometimes it’s overload. Anyway, today I finally went into the trigger settings to check where my action pushed the parameter to and I found they were very low. Once I changed them to just peak for a reasonably hard hit at 127 for analog and 127+32 for the digital pads - hi hat, snare and ride, the sounds popped out. It sounds incredible. As you say, by reaching the max trigger setting it brings the ‘sub’ instrument into play. As I can see there are so many parameters that my default is to leave well alone but with your videos I’m slowly venturing into some of the straight forward parameter changes without getting overload with the technical. Thanks again, cheers.

@@TheeDrumWorkshop Thanks Luke, the smaller pieces of info help me, I can just focus on one setting, trial it then move onto the next. And I know when editing your videos (post production) you can cut your pauses between sentences but, I find keeping the pauses in helps when listening. I find when pauses between information are taken out it creates an overload of information for me. That said, this is my personal opinion, sometimes a pause helps me to understand the info I’m hearing. Just feedback on delivery, when you said you were looking to “slow things down a little”. Please let me know what the general consensus is? As always, thanks for your invaluable videos to support the edrum community. You are always my first go to for online support, cheers DB.

Hey, love you videos! They've been a huge help as the dive into edrums has been overwhelming. Recently saw your videos about using the roland digital snare in various TD models that do not support it. Currently, I am thinking about using triggers on the tom and kick, then my roland pd 128 as my snare (Solely as trigger sounds not layered over acoustic sounds). I know this is probably not ideal, but I'm curious as to your thoughts. My other idea is to use a 27 so i can get a digital snare.. but i dont know if that huge cost is worth it, as I don't use ecymbals. Or if getting the digital snare makes since as im not sure the spdsx pro can use all the benefits the digital snare offers. Sorry this is so long. Thanks!
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop День назад
Hey. Thank you! There would be no benefit to doing the digital snare "hack"/"workaround" for the SPD-SX PRO really, no. You can only really trigger head/rim zones at different velocities with external pads on the SX PRO (there's no rimshot/rim click distinction etc), and you'd be just as well served by any other decent 2 zone pad! Even the PD-128 is a little "overkill" for the unit - the pad's positional sensing abilities aren't useable, for example. But if you already have it and you like using i then that's the best one to go with! It should perform as well as you'd hope. The TD-27 is worth it if you'll use its features - a decent amount of pad inputs, tweakable onboard sounds, the extra articulations afforded by positional sensing, rimshot detection etc. But if you're mainly just firing off samples like you would on the SPD-SX then I don't think it's going to offer you a lot for the extra money. It all comes down to what you actually need the unit to do, they're very different products for different scenarios.
@nayrdrumr
@nayrdrumr День назад
@TheeDrumWorkshop thanks for the thoughtful response! It's much appreciated. Good to know that the 128 is a bit overkill. I've been wanting edrums and acoustic cymbals but what's holding me back is sharing a kit with one to three other bands where they don't use edrums. The spd has been great to provide my band with some lofi beats and unique sounds. Again, much leaned how to make those sample sound the best from your channel. Cheers

Question for ya Luke ! And.... I'll happily pay more for any information on how to achieve what I wrote below. Rim shot video, HARMONIC RIM SHOT at 6:00 min in is what I'm talking about. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sO1caTPEfug.htmlsi=3jY29aXZ2-abttbE I'm trying to get this kind of reggae snare sound in this video I'm posting, at around 6 minutes in. That high pitched crack when you hit the head as close to rim on an acoustic drum. I tighten the head more around the crotch area, and when I play reggae music, then, when I angle my stick and hit the head close to the rim, it's like a high pitched screaming kind of thing. Like a high ting !!! 😁👍 I can't get it to do this on my digital snare on the TD27. I'm not sure if it's possible on edrums yet. Have you tried this by chance or know how to achieve this ? Honestly, I'm not sure if there even is a rim shot like you can do on acoustic drums, aside from just hitting one or the other - rim or head... I dont see how you can control the positional settings inside the snare, so the sensors closer to the rim can sound different. I do get lost in the settings though, and I'm pretty dumb, so I might just be way off and the answer is staring me in the face...lol I already destroyed several user settings and don't know how to get back to where it was originally at...so I figured, I'd ask you to see if it's even possible....lol If this is possible, and if you have a few minutes to tell me the setting to look for ? Just name the price and I'll totally pay for for the info. You deserve it !!! Thanks dude ! Have a great day !!! :-) Ps. I love opening RU-vid and you have a new video !!!!! Thanks for all that you do !!!!!! Everyone absolutely appreciates it !!!!!
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop День назад
Hey. Thanks for the Super Thanks 🙏 It's possible to do this kind of thing on the TD-27, but it depends on a few things and it might not sound the same as that video. The module and any positional sensing-enabled pad like the digital snare can differentiate between hitting the rim alone (a rim click, essentially), "deep" rimshots where you hit the rimshot towards the centre of the drum and "shallow" rimshots where you hit towards the edge like in this video. If you can't achieve these, you might need to look at your trigger settings. How much difference this makes though really depends on the sound that you've chosen as your snare. I've noticed that the Jarrah Ply snare is one of the better ones for this, especially if you set the Overtone to higher values. But I do think that many of the snares in the module sound a bit thinner than those in the video and the "shallow" rimshots often lean halfway between a harmonic rimshot and a more clicky tone. The video you've linked to is also demonstrating with the snare wires off which the TD-27 doesn't have a setting for - you can reduce the wire level but not fully remove it so there'll always be some wire response in there. The way I've made "wires off" sounds tends to use samples, sometimes layered with toms rather than snares, so you lose the ability to do the ringy rimshots with those.

I carry so much gear already for live gigs ..any idea how I could make this work an external Midi Box ???? Great video Luke. Outlining how different playback devices (ie headphones, studio monitors or PA speakers) can greatly affected ones perception of how something sounds is something that doest seem to register for a vast majority of people. I've been trying to tell people this for years, but no one believes me, regardless of the fact that I'm a studio guy, FOH tech and an Edrum evangelist! Velocity is a really big point too. I use SD3 with an EDrumin 10, and many times between libraries I have to adjust velocity, particularly on snare, but sometimes on kick and toms. People using just modules may not be looking into what that does. I have 2 presets for each kit I use. One for headphones, and one for my PA speakers I use to play live. Both are very different. Like most people, I use Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphone, which sound fantastic. That's because they are "voiced" to have accentuated lows, scooped in the upper mid bass and some midrange and top end boosts. Because of this, I rarely eq anything because they make all the drums sound great. I generally just move faders for how I want the kit to sound However on my studio monitors, and PA speakers, the kit balance is off, somethings being too loud or too quiet, and alot more equing how I would handle a live acoustic kit. I also know lots of really great musicians who know absolutely nothing about the tech side of these things. Because I love it and it comes easy to me, I forget how easy it could be to find it so daunting that they try something once or twice without spending any time tweaking, and render it (Edrums) a useless experience. You are really good at clearly and concisely explaining these things in your videos, so hopefully more people can have better experiences with Edrums after learning how to do some common beneficial tweaks.

What do you mean will they change? If you want to avoid note clashes between the modules then you'll need to change them manually because they'll probably have the same notes for many instruments if the modules are the same brand. You'll also need to make sure that MIDI Thru is enabled on the "master" module. I'm not sure if I'm understanding the question properly though.

Hey Luke, thanx a million for all your great work!!! This really inspires me!!! Do you think the host port of an eDrumIn 10 would be able to give you access to the missing parameters (at least some like basic trigger settings or maybe even ps)? As you know, the eDrumIn can be adjusted to send out a midi note instead of CC for ps, so - in theory - if the PD 140 sends out standard midi notes for head, rim and cross stick, the eDrumIn could generate another note e.g. for the ps signal for snare edge. Maybe for a ride cymbal as well. I ordered an eDrumIn two weeks ago and I don’t own a PD 140, so it‘s all a guess… ;-) All the best! Tom
