I noticed the Class A vacuum tube amplifier in the recording area on the shelf, they are suppose to have a warmer sound then using a transistor Class A/B or Class D amplifier.
What’s that? You can’t hear back there? See you should’ve bought the 550 ($5.50) tickets in the front. Three Dog Night - Captured Live at the Forum (1969)
This was a great video, I suppose real cuts from their various hits would have been more expensive than generic guitar riffs; I think it would have enhanced a great and informative video. I've been a Neil Young fan since the end of the 60's.
Unfortunately I am not allowed to use copyrighted music without a license. I hear it in other videos but I don't for the life of me know how they get away with it. I tried singing a Neil line acappella in another video and they took me down for that!
How amazing Tim about your pad only being a few blocks away from those recording studios eh ? Sad to think. Those studios are all a thing of the past now and the music industry is so dead compared to when we were young. Watching your video was such a shot in the arm for me. I really do miss that era man. Deep. …. I’m 68. Thanks once again for your spot of happiness for me and others like us. 🤘 Rock on brother 😎.
As a kid growing up listening to Three Dog Night ❤❤❤ the music ABC Dunhill many great musicians played on the label my favorite songs out to the country The Show Must Go On Nice to hear great stories like this
I can't remember it was the late 80 s or 90s and we were trying to help get the monkeys back on the stage again and we were told , they would be opening for us ? And i said like hell they will ? These guys are like royalty and these guys always will be,,, change the billing it is us that will be opening for them and there you have it and it was a blast they were like 18 years old and one of us joke a round it was really Kool we even worked on some new stuff for them and we learned a lot from them they stayed with us for over a dozen concerts and the people loved them they couldn't believe how well it went and how much they were still loved especially mike. And we hong out on and off stage ,, mickey stay kool long live the monkeys you will always be in our hearts ??? Cowboy rob from the cocaine cowboys 7/7/24
I saw Chuck at rehab center in Washington state,Chuck and Paul Williams both performed and each told there life story /the what it was like, what happened and what its like after getting clean/sober. Sundown M Ranch is Selah Wa. I was an alumni there, they set up a stage on the front lawn and rocked out! Read Chucks book for history and what addiction can do,as well as what recovery can do.
Made such a big deal about Owl’s voice on On the Road Again but didn’t play it and over half way through still no voice and no play their songs! Pretty frustrating. Especially for me since I used to play those songs nightly.
Stood next to Alan when he was in the audience listening to Little Richard who was the opening act for them at the L.A.Forum. He past not long after that. Wish I would have told him how much I liked his music. This was about 72.
TDN were a great rocking band. No doubt about it ! They were huge in Australia let me tell ya. I particularly love the album, around the world with three dog night. Now on CD, also in my collection. Thanks so very much for this review of the band and a walk around. I really enjoyed it. Am going to share this with another music aficionado of mine 😁. Great presentation once again. Cheers.
Thanks much. Interestingly, one of the stops on the vid, American Recording Studios is prolly 2 blocks from my house and I had no idea it was there until I researched for the vid.
I was lucky enough to meet Corey Wells a few years before he passed on. I asked him if there was a song that they recorded that they thought was going to be a hit but it never charted. He laughed and said, 'Oh yeah. the Randy Newman song 'You Can Leave Your Hat On." Well, I hope Randy made some money on the song when it was played in the last scene of the movie "Full Monty:. Not a bad cover by Tom Jones, actually. I'm still a big TDN fan.
Hope you love getting messages from Canned Heat fans outside the USA. I'm a swiss fan, of swiss and german heritage. But a french talking one. Excuse me for my poor english. If you want to listen to a Canned Heat " hommage, in french", just listen " the Bear", on" John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers " album"Blues from Laurel Canyon" ( 1969). Side A,track one.... Best regards from Switzerland, Europe, " the old world".
Great job, very informative. I recently started listening to these guys and discovering how talented they were. Alan was a genius , I have listened to some interviews and he was brilliant. Thank you for posting this.
This is bullshit. Nothing happened. The Band was talented and very lucky and they had a string of hits. That is rare. It's not going to last forever but then again the music still stands strong. They are still popular and there is no fall. This video is bullshit. I attended a Three Dog Night concert in 71 or 72. They were sponsored by Schlitz Beer. I sing and play covers of their hits at open mics and community soup kitchens.
Great video. How different the last 50 years in music would have been if Gram had not succumbed to drugs. Emmylou has been working tirelessly to keep his legacy alive.
One thing you forgot to mention regarding Mike's childhood home is at 5:08 is the corner of Mount Vernon and Fairway. This would eventually lend its name to a bonus fairy tale influenced EP that was released along with the Holland album in 1973.
My late wife, Tracey, was Alan’s first cousin. I was always a big Canned Heat fan from the late 1960’s. I found out about this, however, when Tracey and I were dating while living in Stockton CA in the late 1970’s. “On the Road Again” came on the car radio and Tracey blurted out, “Hey! That’s my cousin” when Alan started singing. It was all I could do to avoid running my car off of the road out of distracted disbelief when she said that. I only met Alan’s Mom (Shirley) once along with his youngest sister Heidi while we were living in Baltimore and they came down from Boston to visit. We did correspond with Alan’s oldest sister, Darrell, occasionally over the years prior to her death around 2011. Darrell once told me that she never quite came to terms with Alan’s death and she sometimes felt he was just out on the road touring.
Totally interesting stuff. I don't know much about his immediate family other than he had a couple sisters and that his father had to fly to LA to identify the body. I would have loved to ask them if in the light of today's medical vernacular they thought he might be Autistic? Or if they ever suspected he was a genius? Thanks for the great comment!
I read Chuck's book. They pretty much kicked him out of the band because he was always so high. They would wheel him to the gigs he was so wasted. He finally got clean after many times at rehab. The place that worked was in El Monte, CA. Cory died, but too bad the other two couldn't get back to together. I saw Cory and Danny and the band at the LA County fair in Pomona, CA. It was in the middle of the park and we sat on these logs. They were the best and it was FREE...
Listening to Muddy changed Blind Owl's life. Listening to Hooker 'n Heat changed mine. I saw Canned Heat open for the Byrds in Upsala College in NJ in, I think, 1969 and bought a few of their records in the next couple of years because I liked what they called "Boogie Music." Then I heard the real thing and had a revelation.
In my humble opinion his subtlety was what defined him and I mean not just on the blues harp but on guitar and especially his singing. Not too many people know how to be explosive and not bombastic.
As a LA native, I visited a fortnight ago and did my rendition of memory lane driving past clubs I frequented. Many you mention I didn't know about despite being under my nose. . Great stuff.
I can’t believe you never mentioned one of the major hits? Eli’s Coming by Laurie Nyro, I sang Doo Wops with both them in Taft H School in the Bronx !!!🤙 I actually knew Eli !
