Not sure what happened since it's been a couple of years but here's my opinion. First, I would have had the parents shop for a different homeowners insurance company and drop the original. If that didn't work, I would have rented a "office" essentially just renting an address, which is cheap, to list as your place of business so you could tell the tiny house insurance company you don't operate a business from home. Lastly, dude you're in Canada, it's practically communist anymore. Not that the U.S. isn't that far behind. I hope you figured it out and make more videos. I just found you and was enjoying the content.

We feel your pain! We were paying $100 per month to ensure our 200 square foot tiny house with MCT / First Insurance Funding of Canada in Nova Scotia. Then when we installed our non-CSA-approved boat wood stove they refused to ensure us so we cancelled. We've been happily living under the radar without insurance for 4 years. It's a risk that we are comfortable with. We know some people who live in brick and mortar houses (fully paid for - no mortgage) who choose to opt out of insurance too. Many THOW owners find the greatest peace of mind by renting a piece of land and living off-grid. How are you guys holding up?

Hey, would you be able to get me the thickness of the tubing they use, 1/8", 3/16" or 1/4"? I'm trying to get specifications to mimic their design since I live on the opposite side of the country and don't have the budget to spend double for transport unfortunately!

Welcome to owning a home. If you operate a business from inside your home, guess what! Insurance goes up! Later if it burns, you could claim financial business related losses... Venting because you thought living in a shed, making cash from youtube was going to be living the dream.... Welcome to Reality..

If you're gonna make youtube work you gotta learn what works. How you present it is often even more important than what you are presenting. There is an abundance of knowledge out there. Just gotta integrate enough of it.

A small shed on the property with an internet connection could be used for your "RU-vid" business. This would allow you to answer honestly that, you do not conduct business from your tiny home, negating the need for the additional cost.

since the tiny house is on a property with a house i would have tried to insure it as a rv and just say your living in the home. And as per the business i wouldn't have said anything since the "business" is online not physically in the tiny home. id just have a copy of all content on the cloud or another physical source like separate hard drive stored somewhere outside the tiny home. my father always said "you have to be a crook to get ahead" and some small white lies just help to get stuff done easier and doesn't hurt anyone.

Hi Jake & Kiva, I found your channel last summer (2022) while I was in the design stage of my tiny home. There are plenty of tiny house construction channels, but I continually come back to yours because it has the best footage and explanations of WHY you are doing things. I commend your transparency and attention to detail in all the videos you produce! My partner and I are in the middle of our build now and I can't overstate the value of your videos. By the way, I am not that far away from where you live, & I would love to buy you both a beer if our paths ever cross. Feel free to get in contact with me.

You need legal representation - I know of the best option (reach out) to hold insurance company responsible. Also just liability insurance for your business as influencers. A multinational company would be best.

@@tinynestproject hey my friends! I sent you an email. I signed up for tiny house bundle a while back and emailed you before btw… Working on me tiny casita and also post RU-vid videos as a vocal artist. Please don’t hesitate to reach out - the only way these guys are going to take the small business people - influencers seriously is if you point out your rights under the law and show them you’re a force to be reckoned with. So just let the lawyers do the talking and watch how things change for the better. Aloha, Micah

Hey, I only just found you, don't feel guilty about selling bundles, totally monetize all of your time and effort, nothing wrong with that! People who want it can buy it and that's it. Some people only sell courses and don't offer any free content. You could totally turn your content into many courses, maybe with some bonus material if you want to keep the stuff that's currently public for free. People usually appreciate what they pay for a lot more. You will never get your time back. All the power!

Just wanted to send some love, my partner and I were diy ers around the time you two where building …we were pretty on pace with a lot of your early videos, we were in similar stages. We were there from the start …I’ve recently been approached about building tow’s with a friend and thought about you two right away and wanted to check in …I hadn’t been keeping up. Everything you said in this video is completely understandable and relatable. It was exhausting even for me to have tiny living be all consuming …it was never meant to be every aspect of our lives, just a tool to help our lives. I couldn’t imagine what it was like for you with running the channel /website brand etc …as well building. Your bundle seems like a smart idea for me (or anyone getting into it ) to freshen up on… the price is unreal for the amount of knowledge you two used to share. Hope all is well and that life levels out for you …what is important should take priority. ❤❤❤

That is EXACTLY WHY I moved the fuck away from Canada. I’m now putting together a tiny house building company in Washington state and it’s easy. All the regulations are simple and it’s just not a problem. Thank you for reminding me of how ridiculous it was to live there. You know… I made more money as an illegal immigrant with no documentation than I could make in Canada with a degree!! I don’t understand how people get ahead there anymore. I do miss my Canadian health insurance though. This system sucks ass down here!!

OMG Wow! Let me give you some advice! Give them the finger and begin to live your own life, with your own power! Screw the insurance! Don't let this crazy system of these businesses who think they have power control your life. Don't even get insurance, get your own land, and don't tell them, even if they ask! I can tell you the owners of the insurance company are making money and greatly bending the laws in their direction, for their benefit, not yours.

Hello Kiva & Jake, I live in Brazil and I've been watching your journey on building this marvelous tiny treasure of yours for the past months. I've been into this tiny house concept thing for a really long time actually, but watching your build series was the real incentive for me to want to start a project like this for myself and my boyfriend in the next 5-10 years. I just wanted you guys to know your tiny house is really beautiful in all aspects, and that your influence is really far reaching. My best wishes for you going into the future!

I've found them very helpful because you are so careful and thorough in your explanations. Congratulations on finishing your build.

I built an octagonal cabin and finished all the interior walls with canvas. I bought the best canvas painters drop sheets from Cloverdale. I stapled it to the studs, saturated it in exterior primer and then painted it with exterior latex paint. This was used as the exterior of canoes in the old days. I have used the same technique to cover skin on frame kayaks. It is cheap, easy, flexible and completely waterproof.

So, in the end, does the insurance cost more than what you earn from RU-vid?
@tinynestproject
@tinynestproject 2 года назад
No, which is why we just paid it in the end, because mathematically the "business" is still a net positive... but it takes such a significant chunk of the already minimal income that it pushed the overall livability of it over the edge. It's the threat of a renewal application being rejected that puts us in this precarious situation.
@therealMelB
@therealMelB Год назад
Which is why you purchase your OWN LAND instead of living on parents property & risking their ability to keep their own homeowners policy. We've had a home built tiny house on permanent foundation on our own land for years now. You don't need insurance if you built it correctly & you're not planning on wanting a payout if you have a natural disaster. It's the risk you take by saving thousands every year by not being in DEBT for 30 yrs to a mortgage company!
