Ok good. By saving the settings onto an SD card from C70 #1 and loading them to C70 #2; will all the camera’s setting match or just the color profile?

Ian, question: I added an external monitor and with the cable plugged in the camera pulls the camera off balance a bit; it is it necessary to re-balance with the cable connected? thx
@ianthurstan
@ianthurstan Месяц назад
Yeah I’ve always had to rebalance if I add a cable, normally it’s the roll axis which needs adjusting and sometimes the tilt, if you get one of those thin flat strip cables it makes it much easier than a traditional heavy cable ☺️

Hello there, quick question for you in this section you’re referring to saving camera settings on an SD card, and then reloading them. Here’s my question: I am renting a second canon C7 camera for a shoot. Can I save the settings on an SD card from camera, one my personal camera. And upload them or reload them to the rented cameraand get the same settings?

@@dawanbrown6615 hiya mate, yeah you should not have an issue taking the camera settings from a rented camera and then uploading the same settings into your own personal camera, as long as the cameras are the same brand and make, I.e as long as they are both C70 cameras ☺️

I just found your channel/this video and all I can say is that your content is criminally underrated. The production quality is very good and the way you educate is very good! I did not expect to be hearing about broad vs short lighting, practical lighting, and a real world use-case example for light modifiers like gels in this one video.

Excellent in depth tutorial Ian, great efforts you put in to explain things in detail for gimbal operation. I am having a very peculiar problem with Dji gimbals & seek your help if you can. I shoot real estate videos where vertical/horizontal alignment is basic need, theoretically gimbals can do this alignment perfectly by locking all axis however Dji gimbals I have tested in lock mode the pan motor changes the yaw while I move left to right in spite all 3 axis locked. I tested with Ronin RS3, Ronin RS3 mini & Ronin SC gimbals, they all show this drifting problem. Is there a setting to ensure that the pan doesn't drift as seen in the video? MY gimbal test shows excellent balance by Ronin app yet this problem happens. Here is the link to video showing the problem ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g-AVecxxe44.html

Just got a C100MK2 and getting to know it. I also have a Panasonic Lumix S1H and S5 so I am familiar with all of these concepts... I have a small learning curve to go through with the Canon ecosystem however... Why do recommend turning VIEW ASSIST off, I did not fully catch that. Is it because it affects the display of the waveform data? Can you kindly elaborate on that. Very helpful otherwise, thank you!!!
@UKHeritageRailways
@UKHeritageRailways Месяц назад
View Assist does not affect the waveform display so if, like me you expose using the waveform, you can leave it on. I've found that exposing highlights to no more than 70% in C-log gives great results in post. Also, don't forget to do an Auto Black Balance. This is something many people fail to do.

Great info! For what it’s worth, DJI recommends you balance the tilt axis first. I still agree: you’ll have to go back and fine tune anyway, most likely.

I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that most people with a Cinema camera would be shooting in RAW or LOG, and therefore would be post-processing in a video editor, and pulling down and adjusting the waveform curves anyway. So whatever exposure is set when recording (e.g. trying to correctly set middle grey to correct IRE) is going to be invalid and reset in post. Therefore as you say, when in RAW/LOG you need to over-expose when recording, and set the levels in post. But this kinda invalidates some of the info in the video, or rather makes it more applicable to those not doing much post. Having said that, I indeed found that using CP1 Wide DR profile is excellent straight out of camera, provides a really good base REC 709 image and a great starting point for basic grading. I'm so tempted to start using CP1 instead, but feel I'm wasting some of the capabilities of the camera ... still learning.
@ianthurstan
@ianthurstan 3 месяца назад
Unfortunately shooting in LOG or RAW doesn’t mean you can expose incorrectly in camera and fix it in post. Yes, with these two types of recordings you do have more play in latitude adjustment and manipulation but that doesn’t mean the you can just expose wherever you want and it will be fixable. Log formats have more latitude but can still be clipped and can loose information if over or under exposed, and if you underexpose too much (even with a raw format) the digital noise and grain will be burned into the footage. This becomes even more problematic with older cameras and older sensors. Newer cameras like the Sony FX range and Canon C70 are much better at controlling their noise and grain, but it can still easily be poorly exposed. RAW formats are actually even more prevalent at retaining noise because there is no noise reduction happening in the camera, and while the RAW format has a ridiculous amount of adjustability, the noise and grain will still be burned in. Yes you can use software to try and remove it in post but this may also soften your image or muddy it (depending on how good an editor you are) and how good the camera is Remember that not all LOG & RAW formats are created equally. It’s also important to try and record at correct levels from a colour perspective, if you under or over expose too much you will start to affect the colour quality and this normally leaves a magenta or green hues; recording at the appropriate levels with false colour gives you a baseline for correct scientific exposure for that cameras sensor, and will allow you to get the overall best image quality. So I would have to disagree with your initial assumption, one of the most important things we say to our students is ‘fixing it in post should not be a priority, shooting it correctly should be’ False colour, just like a traditional light meter, is an imperative part of modern professional filmmaking practice and personally I think it should always be used alongside digital cameras wherever possible. Hope this helps to better explain my veiwpoint ☺️

How do I get access to the mp4 files on the SD card (i.e. (copy them to my pc) to work on. Thanks

Great deep dive into the Canon C70. I took a supposed masterclass on this cinema camera last summer but it left me with so many unanswered questions. I spent the next six months simply setting up test scenes to learn how to best use the camera. Not a bad way to go, mind you, but very time consuming. Then, I stumbled upon your two part tutorial for the C70. Filled in nearly all the blanks I still had, including the ideal ISO setting to use. All I ever read was 800, but as you explained it depends on the profile you're shooting in. So, many thanks, Ian!!!

I wish I could limit file size somehow without recording stopping like gopros do. Why? Because dropbox limits to 50GB files for uploading through website and also to reduce corruption risk of losing all of a bigger file. Such as by static, SEU, etc. Does anyone know if limiting file size is possible other than cutting often.

Lot of terrific information for a brand new C70 owner - thanks. I still prefer shutter speed over shutter angle because it's easier for me to understand being a still photographer turned cinematographer. I came from a C100 M2 so right now I'm shooting WideDR, but I want to use Clog2 more - the Clog1 in the C100 was really a pain to grade and I lost interest in it. Now shooting 422 10bit it's a whole new world!
