Lovely shot with the quarry train Matt! I' m surprised it's only 2% ? But seeing that you "Could" do the road trip in about 7 hrs, some people may think road is quicker, but trucks are not "door to door" in any way! Having been in the industry, freight can sit at depots for days , so it's an illusion that road is quicker, in most cases. It's taking me 10 Fu#$ing days to get a washing machine part from VIc to Brisbane by road!!! The Road transport industry is propped up and it's not a level playing field at all. We need trucks of course, but not for long distance , med' priority freight. Young guys don't want to drive trucks anyway , so rail needs to get their fingers out and improve travel times and services. SCT seem to be doing ok, so it is possible🙂 Once again, a great video Sir. Cheers Gregg.

I’m not being rude in anyway at all so please don’t take it that way mate but literally 90% of the truck drivers that drive for the company I work for are all young blokes, there’s a lot of young blokes driving these days. But due to the public’s perception of us still being drug riddled cowboys in an exclusive boys club like it used to be, you’re right not many people want to drive anymore. But there are a lot of young blokes and girls out there driving trucks still some of us still have the passion. But other than that I totally agree with everything else you said

@@CoreyFielden Hi Corey , during my time behind the wheel, I did see many a "drug riddled cowboy" ,, especially at the big food warehouses, trying to back onto a dock..LOL. Good to see the younger guys in the job, and I hope it's getting a better reputation, especially for interstate work? What we don't need is 500hp trucks with two containers driving 1000km...when a train will do that with about 75 hp..give or take. What we do need , is a reliable, efficient, trucking network for local and "last mile" deliveries, which works with rail , instead of against it. I really enjoyed my time driving, no interstate and home every afternoon, and loved the 13 Speed RoadRangers .....a nice change from my Volvo 12 speed box, but the old FL10 was a nice daily drive! Stay safe mate. Gregg;_)😀

The Maribyrnong River viaduct is a bit of a 'hot spot' for trespassing juveniles. Another nice collection.

I would think too, in addition to clearance limits, given the short (for railroads) distance between Sydney and Melbourne, especially compared to the Trans-Australian railway, justifies why the percentage of freight on the line between the two largest cities of Australia is that low

Two per cent of the total Melbourne/Sydney freight volume is absolutely criminal and needs to be rectified. Make the best use of ISO shipping containers and have regular trains shuttling back and forth between Melbourne and Sydney. Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺

The plan in this article would be a great start! Shorting the route by 60 kilometres and removing several slow sections would mean Passenger trains could make the trip in 6 hours and freight in 10 and for about 10 times less cost than proposed high speed rail routes which are unrealistic and don’t help improve the movement of freight also. Something needs to happen! www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/dec/15/sydney-melbourne-rail-track-upgrade-is-cheaper-quicker-way-to-slash-journey-times-says-expert

It's been like this for decades. All to do with some huge court case between the trucking industry and the state operated railways.

Yes, many, many kilometres! This was some footage from a trip in 2022, but I'm also in Melbourne at the moment, coming over from SA via Yarrawonga, so another good 1500 kilometres in the last few weeks. Thanks for watching, and you too! Matt - M&S Trains

Is there much more capacity on the Sydney to Melbourne line?
@MS_Trains
@MS_Trains Месяц назад
I’d say plenty! Most of it’s double tracked and the parts that aren’t have 6KM Passing Lanes installed to aid in crossing and overtaking more efficiently. Compare to 20 years ago, the line is hardly used and if anything capacity has improved from then. Matt - M&S Trains
@krdcountrytv
@krdcountrytv Месяц назад
South of Goulburn, it is the most underused double track line in Australia. Auto signalling on the NSW side that was installed in the 1990s was designed for 8 minute headways but nothing like that ever occurs in real life. I'd suggest the line could easily handle twice the traffic it does today with no loss of efficiency, although the single track (with loops/passing lanes) south of Seymour can be a bottleneck at times. Even though not many trains might use the line, they all want to use it at the same time!
