The perfect jacket makes you feel more confident, stylish & fabulous.
🍉 Hi, I'm Fin. Welcome. I'm on a quest to make the perfect jacket.
I mostly make simple dresses, if you're a beginner, they are quite manageable. Jackets do require a higher level of skill and do take much longer to make, but they're totally worth it!
What a nice mistake to receive that yummy chocolate wool fabric. I’ve had some surprises from online fabric orders but nothing as nice as that. Thanks for the fabric haul. So much fun looking at the beautiful fabrics. Good luck with the beading on your faux leather jacket. I totally understand how it can take longer than expected to finish. Well, I’m off to grab some dark chocolate from my pantry. 😀🧵🪡📿🧥🍫💖
hi, Sorry this episode is a day late. I'm still working on the faux leather jacket. I had hoped it would be finished but the beading is taking me longer than expected. So, here's the last fabric haul I recorded back in June, meanwhile, I'm busy beading the rest of the front of the faux leather jacket. 🧵🪡 Happy sewing. May your sewing projects be less complicated than mine! 🧥
That’s a great looking jacket and I like the beads you’re using. The emerald green beads are so pretty and they do look like the Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz when they’re displayed together. Looking forward to part 2! 😀🧥💚📿🪡🧵
Hi Fin. Wow -- what a project. I'm not sure what the design inspiration is (or maybe you said and I missed it, or it's not to be divulged), but the design on the back reminds me of the Olympic torch and the opening ceremonies in Paris where they used the entire open air expanse of the Seine River through the city and all the buildings and greenery along it as a huge stage, even in the rain. As the athletes made their appearances in boat after boat coming down the river, I noticed that many of the country colors were blue and white and red, with green being more rare. So the chevrons or arrows of your design in black/blue and white and red reminded me of that. And then, of course, the gold jacket reminds me of Olympic gold medals. I think you need a gold medal for pushing the needle through that leather material so many times for all the beads! I can't wait to see the final and incredible jacket in all its glory, Antonia
Thanks so much! Yes, sewing into leather or faux leather is quite a challenge. Thankfully this is a thinner faux leather. I have another pale gold faux leather jacket, I made the jacket years ago but I still haven't beaded it. As beautiful as the jacket is, it's just so impossible to sew into. Perhaps I'll give it another go once I've finally finished the beading on this one. 🥰🎨🧵🪡🧥
Thanks! Sadly, no, I don't have any dark green bows. The black ones have a sort of oil slick finish, so they shine different colors - sometimes green. 🎨🥰💚
Thank you! 🎨🥰🧵🪡 The thinner faux leather is good but the thicker ones are a nightmare to try and get your sewing needle through. I think a denim jacket is easier. (It becomes 'dry clean only' once it has beading on it, even though it's a denim jacket.)
@@PerfectJacket What was the backing fabric you were using here? You had the faux leather, a few layers of stiff netting, and another black fabric, what was that black fabric? I don't mind at all when you don't have a finished product by the end of the video. I'm enjoying the ride :D and it's so relatable as it's all such an overwhelming amount of work. Honestly, I don't know how you do it all! I have 2 different faux leather blues left over and I wanted to make a beaded/embroidered travel bag out of one and a patchwork/embroidery type shoulderbag out of the other. This is all going to take ages. They're of the thinner variant so I'm glad to hear these are preferred. I've sewn faux leather with this machine before and had no problem what so ever, in fact I believe it's the first project I did lol I have no love for denim but a corduroy could work for me but I'm afraid I'll need a new machine when it comes to multiple thick and though layers. However those few small pieces of multiple layers can be done by hand quite easily.
The black fabric is just the faux leather. It's two layers glued together. It's the glue layer that makes faux leather difficult to pin and sew. But it also means that once you do finally finish the piece it will age well.
Omg love to sew is my favourite podcast! And I love beading and embellishing things please do more chatty beading vlogs and I love you sharing inspiration it’s like chatting with a friend that gets me, there is so much work that goes into the designer stuff wow
Aww, thank you! I recently did a whole episode on how I do all the different types of beading. 🥰🎨 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hK-Zbc0P5OM.html
Loving the olive green quilting fabric, it's calming in a way. I'll never get enough of wildflowers so lovely and pretty. Today we walked for miles through fields of wildflowers, yeah loved it. Ooh those white iridescent flower beads on that fabric with the black background and white flowers are everything!!! The picture of the cottage with the wildflowers OMG I wanna live there!!! You advised me to turn my unnecessary pockets into a purse and I've made a design for the beading that places the beads very close together concentrated in one area. The slightly loose and thin cotton fabric is too fragile to handle that. What should I use as a backing? Could I just use the petticoat style tule that you use for your jackets, and should I use multiple layers?
Yes, I think 2 layers of the stiff netting would work as backing. But if the beads are heavy and all in one spot, the purse might sag once it's done from the weight of the beads. Depends how heavy the beads are. You could add a few more backing layers.
@@PerfectJacket Thanks Fin, this is fantastic news. And it will add stiffness to the bag as well which is helpful. I'm so glad I don't have to look for a specialized embroidery backing fabric because that's harder to come by, especially in the middle of summer holiday. The beads are light enough, I think it will definitely work like this.
Really enjoyed looking at all the beautiful floral fabrics. That’s a great idea making Chanel jackets that look like gardens. The solid green would look beautiful made up with rows of beads resembling rows of flowers. What a beautiful idea! Oh, and a poppy dress! Yes, a full poppy dress would be gorgeous. You have a lot of good ideas. That’s funny not to buy too many beads. My local store had a half off bead sale last week and I was trying not to buy too many but that’s impossible especially when it’s half off. My collection keeps growing lol. I need more hours in a day to finish all my projects and use up my beads. Happy sewing and beading! 😀🧥👗🌸🌷🌻💖🧵🪡📿
Oooh, bead sale!!!!! lol Yep, I know exactly what you mean. I had to go through my bead collection to find beads for my current project and I swear it took me half the weekend. It's so much fun looking at them all and dreaming up different designs. I think they're a worthwhile investment just for the enjoyment you get looking at them all (and eventually using them). 🎨🥰🌸🧵🪡
The patchworks bodice sounds so interesting, I'm looking forward to it! I'm finishing my first pair of pants at the moment. I'm removing the pockets as they made me look square in the hips, I can think of a few unflattering things to say about my body but square hips isn't one of them lol I'd bought some beads to place along the pockets to distract or make it more flattering....now, I've removed the pockets and I'm still married to those beads and have no idea where to place them. I think I'll sprinkle them around the top...I don't know lol
That's awesome! Pity bout the pockets. I love the idea of pockets but they never quite look as good as I think they will. You could sew the two pockets together, add a handle or drawstring and make a little purse. Beads would look fabulous on that! I absolutely love a beaded purse. 🥰🎨👜
@@PerfectJacket OMG that's an amazing idea 🤗💜🤗 yes, I'm all in on beaded purses. I was thinking of using the beads to make a bracelet but I like a purse better 😁 Thanks
Love the beautiful layer cake dress! It would be perfect for a garden party. I love how the pink floral and shadowy frog fabric pop. The frog fabric is so so cute! Thanks for the detailed info for making the dress. I’ll be using the info graphic you post so I can refer to it when constructing a layer cake dress. It’s easy to get lost in all the lengths for each tier. Happy sewing! 😀👗🌸🌷💖🐸
Thanks! Yep, it can be a bit confusing. And I hate having to unpick my mistakes!! I usually just measure and cut out all the fabrics, then put the fabrics for each tier in a different place, and just work on one tier at a time. 🐸🌸 The frog pond and the bright flowers are my fave parts of this one, too. 🥰🎨👗
This dress only has about 6 and a half yards in it. I don't think they're heavy but I wear beaded jackets. If you can't wear platform shoes then a maxi dress in quilting cotton would probably be too heavy. But you could make one of cotton lawn. It's must thinner and lighter.
I envy so much the way your tendency towards industriousness allows you to buy and use so many novelty fabrics. I have been resisting the Hakea and Fairy Wren canvas at Spotlight for so long...if I was just a little more industrious purchase would be justified.
Oh, my gosh. That fabric is lovely! 🕊 You could make a simple tote to use as a grocery bag. That wouldn't take much time. I love fairy wrens. They're so pretty.
@@PerfectJacket Yes it is very nice. I go in to Spotlight to buy items I need and items for projects that will be useful and always visit that fabric and look at it for a few seconds. I own too many tote bags. Too many skirts too, trousers are my usual. Jackets I tend to like having just a few favourites. I think a waistcoat, maybe, would be the best use of it for me.
I just came upon your review. I am making this dress and I have had so much trouble understanding how the collar works. I spent hours trying to get it right. I'm glad it isn't just me. I found the instructions were lacking in detail.
Yes. It's been a while but I think they kept calling it a collar when it was a really just a lapel. It was so confusing! Best of luck with it. It's a very pretty dress, eventually. 👗🌸🥰
Thanks. As I said in the video, the store, Spotlight Stores, only delivers to Asia. Spoonflower is a print on demand online fabric store with 1000s of designs, Mood Fabrics also have some great prints. Or, you could try your local quilt stores. They often have some adorable novelty/kids prints.
The dinosaur jacket really is lovely! The fabric print is so unique. Love the adorable dinosaurs in beautiful colors. So many different dinos and they’re all so cute! Thanks for explaining how you put the jacket together. Oh, a beaded trim with all the colors would look fabulous! Enjoyed watching the video and thank you! 😀🦕🦖🎨🧥💖
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. 🦖 Yep, I really want to do a beaded trim but they take so much time and so much room - you have to make the trim in one big piece on a frame. They are lovely. though, so maybe. 🥰🎨🧥🦕
The poppy dress has very warm colors and I think it's very romantic. I could die over the dinosaur jacket. I love!!! I recently saw a jersey fabric with all kinds of fun cartoonish animals on it, I'm considering it for a hoodie type sweater, it reminds me very much of your dinosaur fabric. I'm loving the colors and just the vibes it's giving.
