The DC-10 was rushed into production. Design flaws: a single pin that (basically) held the wing engines in place. In this case the pin broke, the port engine flipped up and off the wing, the assymetric thrust caused the aircraft to roll to port. I believe two cargo doors blew off catastrophically. A center engine detonated, causing the loss of all hydraulics. What kind of moron puts the redundant hydraulics right next to the primary hydraulics right under an engine that can frag?? Most of the people survived that flight. One boy jumped out of the plane before impact and wasn't hurt badly at all. Kapton insulation on wiring caught fire, killing all on board. The DC-10 was a half baked POS. McDonnell Douglas renamed it "MD-11"
It was a very bizarre thing to occur back then when passenger airliners went down at airports. Air travel was still a relatively new fad with latter-day modes of aircraft being introduced. So when one went down, it was a bigger disaster event for people to learn of in the paper, see on the news, or witness.
