What's up RU-vid? I'm Steven Ferguson, a DIY'r living in central North Carolina (Wake Forest area). This channel began with me simply documenting things I was trying in my lawn to make it a superior lawn. It's grown and grown, and here we are. On Monday, Wednesday & Fridays we do lawn care videos that release at 7am. I also stress the fact that I'm NOT a professional! I've never worked in lawn care at all. I've been soaking up RU-vid knowledge on lawn care topics starting in 2019. So far, I've been very successful, as you'll see from our results. I hope you'll follow along with us as we vlog the do's and don'ts of a cool season, turf type tall fescue lawn in North Carolina.
May God richly bless you all, and feel free to Like, Share, and Subscribe!
Jesse lawn life hatrick fireball grass seed. Tried gci turf seed. Mvs seed Ntep trials as part of my golf course superintendents career working on pga championship and us open championship courses. Ive been able to work with turf plots for bentgrass for all cool season and warm season lawns. Mr Ferguson great call!!!! Ppl overlook Jonathan green products. Ive had good luck with my dads back yard shaded area
I’ve been gearing up since may for my lawn project, i have everything on hand and waiting to be laid down, i went with the Gci Spreader Elite, cant wait for fall time 🫡
Good luck for the tournament it’s not my sport no idea to play golf also I would like to recommend you this fertilizer LESCO 24-0-11 I tried last year and this year grass is still green I bought at Home Depot.
Jonathan Green Heat & Drought for me here in Climax. My lawn has taken a beating and I want to try this, and see if it looks better than it has this year.
You're gonna like MVS. My front yard is Artimuss blend which is a blend of MVS cultivars and some spots I was concerned about early spring have thickened up and aren't even a thought anymore. Holding up very well so far with just a few struggle spots which I blame on the soil and compaction.
I still have 8 lbs of the Ryan Knorr Elite TTTF seed I got last year, gonna use it all to overseed backyard. I bought the JG Tri-Rye from Ace earlier this year, it came in good in Spring but seems the heat killed it already in spots I put it. So I'm gonna overseed front yard with it in Fall, hopefully it matures enough that it will last through winter & summer next year. I wanna core aerate but don't know how much that will cost. I plan on buying an electric dethatch & scarifier machine soon.
Artimuss TTTF for me this fall. Went with Barenbrug last fallbut it ended up producing seed heads which produce stalks that turn brown not to mention they are rough on the feet.
Is the GCI turf type tall fescue a thin or thick bladed grass? I like thinner bladed grass, and very few seed companies put pictures of the actual grass on their sites.
Obsidian perennial rye blend mixed with blue resilience from twin city seeds for me. More or a less a better version of JG black beauty ultra. Biggest thing for me is adding good soil. The greenest area in my yard that has had any issue is the one I renovated last fall where I brought in a ton of topsoil and sand.
Im thinking about trying Jesse from lawn life's seeds. I think hat trick and fire ball. He says theyre the darkest cultivars around. I already overseeded cool blue the last 2 yrs. Just trying to mix it up a little.
Pretty well, about the same as mine. His back lawn has been struggling all year. However, they got lots of rain this past weekend, so he's doing better water wise than me.
I applied fungicides on 6/9 and should be about ready to apply again. I am pretty certain I now have rust on areas of the front lawn where I have attempted to keep watered enough to keep it from going white. I have nutsedge coming up all around, but I’m afraid to try to treat for it. I’m also seeing common Bermudan trying to invade from my neighbor’s yard and am debating trying to put glyphosate on it, maybe with one of those foam applicators to try to get it without getting my GCI TTTF/KBG. We finally got some rain Sunday evening here in Concord, NC for the first time in almost a month, but not much. I watched the radar as two different fronts got within a couple miles of me and then split, with one passing less than 1/4 mile of me right along the opposite side of the main road. Glad you had a great trip and thanks for the content as always.
Another great video, Mr. Ferguson. My family went on vacation two weeks ago, came back and the yard was fried in some areas. Had to ramp up the water but we've a bit of rain over the last week. I'm due to put out fungicide this weekend and it's going to be so hot. Hope you have a great 4th of July! God Bless!
I don't think most of those spots will survive. There's dormancy, and then there's death. The spots will be toast by the end of the summer without significant consistent watering unfortunately. I'd be shocked if fall came along with the rains and voila, all is good again.
Im in Newport News Va we just got like .5" yesterday ive been watering like crazy it felt good to finally skip 2 30 min 5am irrigation cycles this morning. Im still sitting on a bag of freedom fert from the memorial day sale. Hopefully we get more rain this weekend. One thing i have come to know is you can't trust the weather man.
I just mowed the lawn to 4 inches after a month of not cutting it. It's definitely stressed out. Praying for some rain. Too hot to be applying anything to the lawn right now.
Thanks for sharing. I’m in a similar situation. I’m trying to accept that “cool season” fescue means high heat dormancy. Here in central ca the heat is so high(100-110) even water can’t keep the lawn from stress and dormancy. It will come back and heck, need to remember this is only 2-3 months of a year. So hard to watch though, isn’t it??
We officially ended up with .019" for the "event", but most of that fell after midnight. It was very spotty and as some might say, it was a lot of bark (thunder) and very little bite (rain).
Guess it figures, go on vacation and it rains a lot and when you return it hasn't rained at all. Hope it rains like hell in the next day or two. The yard is struggling but you're well aware of that. Your next mow should be a lot of fun, you'll probably have to make at least 2 passes', each being a little lower. I don't envy you. Good luck Mr. F, it'll come back, just may take a while.
After a 10-day vacation last fall my lawn in northern Louisiana looked like this or worse and I thought it was dead. It didn't come back until late spring and it is fine. This year I am putting down less fert and less water. Do we really need our lawns to look like perfect green carpets?
Hopefully you got some of that rain yesterday. I finally got just over 2 inches in Clayton. Edit: Oh so it missed you. If only I read your comment before my post. Anyway, I can feel ya... I have gone many years where the storms come to my house, split, and go around me. My church would get 2-3 inches and I would get 0. But... I do have celebration bermudagrass and it stays green no matter what.
I saw john made a video the other day of a new NEXT product called Hydr8 if u havent seen it check it out looks pretty cool might help with the heat war!
Our summer was like that in Iowa last year, this year it’s been good. Only good thing I can see is your saving money on fungicide 😊 your lawn still looks good while it’s sleeping 😴
Have you ever considered the above-ground traveling sprinkler device for your larger sections? Wish I had done that instead of spending thousands on an irrigation system.
Irrigation can be a very poor investment. I'm an unhappy owner of an irrigation system for a 4500 sq ft bermuda lawn in northern Louisiana with poor clay soil and extreme summer heat. I bought the house new and had the builder install the sprinkler system for thousands thinking that would solve those issues. Because the sprinkler system is underground, the crooked installer banked on me not noticing his defects and cutting corners. Knowing what I know now I would have skipped the sprinkler system altogether and gotten several of those above-ground traveling sprinkler devices for the larger portions of the lawn. It has been a huge distraction and expense just to keep the stupid thing running year after year.
LOL ...peeing on a building on fire 🔥🔥🔥. We got a thunderstorm Sunday afternoon about a 1/4 inc i think that maybe this hurricane maybe bring us something. Have a great day sir 👍.
My brother in Christ Jesus greeting to you and your family! I just reseeded my lawn with triple threat, my question I have for you is how long does it take before I begin to see seed germination ( reseeded on jun 12) I see no signs of germination?
Hey Brian. It typically takes 5-7 days to see signs of germination of fescue. However, it’s so hot right now, dont think it can survive. I recommend waiting until September to seed.
I'm looking forward to the video of the yard when you get back from vacation. Oh, baby I remember the last time. Hope it rains a lot (at the house) while you're enjoying family time.
I love this stuff. I"m in northern Louisiana with poor soil. I put down 12 oz per thousand, once per season early in the season when it's cooler, via backpack sprayer with great results. Then one more time later in the season at 10 oz per thousand. Rest of the nitrogen I need comes from Anderson's granular post emergent (21-0-10 I think) also twice a season when the soil temp hits 55-ish.
