Unfortunately the RMK 800 Vertical Edge engine blew up 50 feet from the parking lot on day 1 of our snowmobiling season. On top of all that, I was having GoPro issues so I couldn't dive into the details much on the trail. Turns out it's catastrophic so comment below if you have any ideas on what we should do with this thing! #goproissues #goprofail #snowmobile #blownmotor

The RU-vid comment section is a place of detectives! Yes it appears the pistons were installed backwards :( Hard way to learn from your mistakes but luckily this sled only cost me $400. Unfortunately replacement parts are a bit steep so I decided to part this one out. I have already made my money back and plan on saving for a nicer sled for next winter. I will continue to post riding content using my 2006 Polaris Switchback for this winter. I appreciate everyone's investigation into this and I will try to do better work on the next project! Hopefully I can focus on riding and getting better at that vs wrenching on these things all winter. It is my first winter snowmobiling and my first time working on 2 strokes so I have a lot to learn!

Kudos to your attitude about learning. Sometimes it's the expensive hard way . I do all my own wrenching and tear my snowmobile apart top to bottom every year except the motor unless it's needed . 60 years old now and make very few mistakes . Learn as you go

Those cylinders have a pressed in aluminum sleeve with a chrome like coating called Nikasil . If the cylinders are gouged you can send them to Millennium Technologies where they can refurbish your cylinders on an exchange basis and have you on your way with already reconditioned cylinders, with minimal down time.

Easy diagnosis... rings caught in the exhaust port and broke. Check to see which way the pistons were put in, looks like from one close up of the less damaged one that the pistons were in backwards. End gaps need to go towards the intake, not the exhaust.

After a reply to my other comment, I just paid attention and took a quick look.. Its time to find a new mechanic lol.. Those pistons are installed backwards. The ring gaps are supposed to line up with the cylinder walls on the intake side, not in the middle of the exhaust port

It certainly appears that you put the pistons in backwards. The rings caught the exhaust port. ring opening is supposed to go towards intake. Did not appear to be an oiling issue. When installing your pistons you want to be sure to check your ring end gap. and put a liberal coating of oil on the cylinder walls. After having a motor out you want to be sure to bleed and prime your oil pump. And mix some oil in your gas as a safety. Also I seen in your last video you wrote you left the sled running in the driveway for a half hour. Was that a half hour straight? with no cool down periods? Because if so that engine would have gotten blazing hot, as they rely on snow getting thrown up on the heat exchangers for cooling. Getting the engine extremely hot with tight ring end gaps would also cause a ring to swell and catch the exhaust port.

You didn’t bleed the oil pump when you put everything back together. There’s a 8mm bolt on top of the oil pump. Once the lines are hooked up and there’s oil in the tank crack the bleeder screw till some oil runs out. Then premix 4/5 gallons of gas and run the engine. It will push the air out of the rest of the lines.

pretty normal polaris big bore stuff.. They haven't built a reliable engine over 600 CC since the triple days. Not sure what brand pistons those are, but the base gasket looks like a cheap aftermarket one. Looks like the ring locating pin fell out, or sunk, letting the ring spin, then it hooks a port, and its all over but the crying. Schrapnel goes into the other cylinder and takes that one out. Cost yourself a lot of extra $$ going after that jug with a hammer and throwing it.. You can get those cylinders completely repaired for a couple hundred bucks...

Never seen any two stoke last long without oil. Helps when you put rings on the right way.

Somebody spent some money on that sled at some point. You got a full slp exhaust. Slp cheater heads and intake. Prob 1000 dollars right there. I highly suggest you get a manual if you plan on rebuilding it again.

Don't sell the bottom half of the engine. If the top was oil starved, the bottom was as well.
