What was so `SHOCKING` ? Would it not grab more attention to say Surprising instead ? Trust an American to over dramatize everything and blow it up out of all proportion.
@@RenLuuk American / Canadian, whatever. The word shocking does not apply here either way. The word shocking means its something to be avoided, on the other hand, surprising garners more attention to view to see a better side.
Huge drinking culture in Scotland and limit has changed to zero tolerance for drivers. I don't drink but not sure I completely agree with this; surely a wee glass of wine at beer should be tolerated, dunno.
That would be the Council tax, which includes water rates for running water, sewage, etc., which every household has to pay whether rented or owned. For this the Local Council will provide street lighting, road maintainance, refuse and recycling collection and free bins/food pails, environmental health, fire and police, schools, libraries, air/sea/mountain rescue, payments to some charities and local organisations that provide a service considered essential or important for the community such as day centres for disabled adults, community activities for able and disabled children, social work services, buses, and so on. We are more used to the rain I suppose; if you don't go out in the rain you'd be housebound! I have never owned a brolly and when I cycle I take waterproofs if I'm going more than local.
Of course! But in Canada we just pay the same tax differently. I will always remember the shock of learning about it for the first time. I still get an annual shock when I receive my council tax forecast. So some things never change I guess 😅
@@RenLuuk Local Gov't kept short of money by Central Gov't and if they do make their budget, it's lowered. I was the same with hidden taxes when I lived in Texas for a while...sales tax, what the...! Edinburgh is expensive though, especially until you find your way around the tourist traps; I live in the Highlands.
It is no surprise to me that you think that the Landscape reminds you of Canada we were apparently conjoined at one point according to microfossils found in only two places on the planet, If memory serves me right it is Scotland and Newfoundland. I hope we treated you well. Haste ye back. Rab
Cooo, it doesn’t sound like you love Scotland much… a few wee comment from someone who is a scot and lives in Scotland. It does not rain everyday. “All” food is not deep fried, only stuff you buy in a fish and chip shop, because deep fryers is all they have. The “extra tax because you rent” is the tax everybody pays for their public services like garbage collection, road maintenance etc etc. even home owners pay it. The tax is billed to every inhabited property. Dunblane may indeed have been the “last” school shooting here, but it was also the first and only school shooting here… a small point maybe, but an important one. Oh,and dunblane isn’t just outside Edinburgh…. Although, to be fair, it might be from the POV of an American.. it’s a little over an hour away and a Scot wouldn’t describe that as “just outside” Stirling
@@RenLuuk There are only so may non cymraeg speakers who can move here before nobody speaks it. There has been a huge influx of people outpricing locals and moving here thinking it is just a part of england. It is not.
Do it fairly regularly, actually. Of course if you keep driving you get to Netherlands and Belgium and all sorts of other amazing places. And you have a car!!!
but that was for free water tapped into your home, street lighting all the hours of darkeness, refuse collection, from your door, and many other community based resources people need, not corporations, and car owners, people, that walk and breath.
Absolutely. We pay council tax in Canada as well - but it’s part of the rent if you’re a tenant. Was just a surprise! Well used to it now though, having paid it for the last 25+ years 🤪
Well, haven't you made my day 🤗 I have to say that I am grateful every day - even in the rainy days that have been in abundance the last few weeks ... hopefully one day it happens for you x
@@RenLuuk from NW Washington US (grew up in Alaska US), at 64 and a DNA test later, found out I'm 87% Northern Welsh, and 13% Scotch/ Irish. I love local history and enjoy researching places I live or travel. So far I'm loving what Wales has to offer. One thing I haven't been able to find is what does it cost to move/live in Wales and how to get a visa.
At least you were off the road when doing a selfie. I was traveling southon the M6 in the Lake District a bend was coming upa lorry was on the slow lane so we could not see why it suddenly swerved, luckly we did not det squished. A family had PARKED on the slow lane and were taking selfies with the stuuin views. God knows how we are alive.
First time viewer....LONG time lover of Scotland! Have been from Inverness to John-O-Groats....Inverness to Ullapool via Kyle Lochalsh (and All Of Skye!!! Saw the Neist Point Lighthouse in the video). Was there in September and my only disagreement.....More Time! Over the years I've cut out more time.....well....because I can. If possible for anyone visiting Skye, North Coast, Speyside.....anywhere in Scotland, slow down and look around where you are. There Is So Much in just a small area of Scotland. If you can take your time. Have been visiting Scotland for over 50 years. Have travelled the World Over. Scotland is the ONLY place I return to again and again. Judging you???? All kinds of people have all kinds of opinions about all kinds of things. There I fixed it!
Fantastic video and you are fun :) I'm visiting Wales in February to visit my daughters future husband who is welsh. We're from the US. so looking to have fun! She's moving to Cardiff.
Their anesthetic didn't work on me because of the anxiety meds I take. I had good luck with the first surgery but not the second. I got edema in my eye, have dark rim on the outside and lights flashing. It had been 2 months since the second one. I am seeing a new eye dr. I found out I have Fuch's Dystrophy in the bad eye and will probably need it lasered to get scar tissue off the lense. Fuch's Dystrophy can lead to a retina replacement.
You poor thing! You have been through it for sure. Sounds like there is a solution though. Amazing how one surgery is problem free and the other is not. Really hope this works out for you 🙏
I travelled a fair bit and never once was shocked by anything I encountered anywhere. The only thing Yanks should be shocked at, is you can walk up to a policeman and not get shot.
I have also been shocked by some Middle East issues I encountered, cabs in Turkey, traffic in Bali. Of course I have no clue what you consider a “fair bit” of travel. You’ve been to Spain?? You don’t have a RU-vid channel so hard to guess. But it is curious that you somehow think I’m a “Yank”. You aren’t THAT well travelled if you can’t recognise my accent 😂
I did and I didn't. It was pleasantly windy most of the time. So no midges. But if it stopped being windy - out they came. They love the evening twilight hour. Just as I was going to settle down for the night, would go outside to sit with a glass of wine ... and ... then clouds of midges would descend. I had skin so soft and midge spray - and a midge hat that went over the face. But impossible to eat or drink outside obviously. And they get everywhere - so opening the car door to get away from them was a challenge. They are so so tiny and travel in groups of millions x
How did I miss this amazing road trip?!!!? What an incredible experience! We have been missing you on RU-vid, hope everything is going well for you my friend 😀
You're the best! Sadly, have had to move on to other sorts of things ... for a while ... do plan on coming back. Hope you and the family are doing well x
I'm 57 years young and I recently had cataract surgery done. I had the dropless cataract surgery done and I chose a monofocal lens set for distance implanted in my eyes. No regrets and my sight is just fine. Just need glasses to read small/fine print. In my opinion a healthy dialogue with your eye doctor is paramount and educate yourself before you choose a proper lens for your eyes. Be aware that a relatively healthy eye is required for best results regardless of the lens you choose. Anyway, thank you for the video. It is appreciated. Take care and stay well and good luck to everyone.

How lovely to get your message. That has really made my day. Obviously I am also in love with Scotland. I’m actually planning a bicycle trip later this year and will definitely be making a video about it. So watch out for that one!! 🚴♀️ 💨 🏴
I start the NC500 tomorrow, drove from Exeter to Glasgow today. Can’t wait to see amazing scenery and have time to reflect on my own. Thank you for a not over done blog!
Fantastic! I’m planning outer Hebrides later this summer … or September … have a fabulous time. Take time for that important reflection. I truly believe nature is the greatest healer 🙏
Well I overhaul my office/studio/art room about three times on my channel 😂 and I’ve done a bunch of shorts organizing cupboards - which shows my kitchen and laundry room…. And several other cooking vids that show my kitchen … oh yes - and one showing how to help back issues “in the bedroom” - so you see my bedroom. How’s that?? 😂
Is that right? I actually didn’t realise that. I know I DID mix up two of my harbour towns - but noticed after I posted them. Hope you forgive me. Poetic licence?? 🙏 🏴
