My name is Ryan - although some of you might have known me as Colt Wheeler in the past. I grew up in the era of the internet, but what I always found there were plenty of blues, rock, and metal lessons and channels, but only a few modern country guitar lessons and not many country guitar channels. So I initially created this channel to help cut through the nonsense and test the advice out there and learn some country guitar along the way.
Then I got deep into amp modeling - you can blame Kris Gottlieb - the guitarist of CBDB - for recommending the Axe Fx to me back in college. I've been going down that rabbit hole every since.
Country music is my favorite style of music, but I also love 80s hair metal, the jam band scene, classic blues and rock, and so much more. So while I initially started out to help my former self learn country music, you wont find any shortage of other guitar stuff here.
HX stomp is the swiss army knife of pedals, Like the swiss army knife, It is old but it does everything it was designed to do so same as the HX stomp, HX stomp is still the best when it comes to it it's price point. More Juice = more $$$
Now Iam thinking? I bought a strat for 500.00 with an asametrical neck on it and I loved it! Pawned it, because money was tight. But now I want it back! But, yes but, what you said makes all the sense in the world of guitar necks , shape, style ect. So now Iam THINKING! AND DONT KNOW WHAT TO GET! I'll probably start shaving a few strat/ tele necks and see what happens. But thank you!

Regarding the statement that it can replace a pedalboard 100%: How do you control things like pedal volume swells, wah-wah, and whammy pitch modulation without an expression pedal? I can't find any information about that online. Any insight you have would be much appreciated!
@@ryansnydercg I think you misunderstood my question. Of course I know that you can hook up expression pedals to it, but that's not the point. He said it could replace your pedalboard 100% so I'm wondering how that functionality works without having to add expression pedals.
seems you can edit in HX Edit if you choose the Windows tab, then Command center. But I still have trouble making the Snapshots stick. it's something to do with Bypass , behavior Press and Release .
There is some processing power. I do believe the FM3 is limited to only one amp block and there are a few other limiting factors like only one delay per preset or something like that. And then on the flip side I believe the Axe FX 3 can run multiple IRs and some other FX the FM line cannot.
The fact that you mention the iPhone highlights the flaws in your argument. Music gear is not equivalent (nor does it need to be) to smartphones. Not to mention that phones are mainly on 1 year release cycles for marketing reasons. I have guitar pedals that haven't changed in 30 years. Still sound great. Saying a modeler from 2015 is out of date is silly. It worked then, it works now just the same. And if you need more DSP buy a Helix Floor, or use the Stomp's fx loop to offload some blocks to other pedals.
But an iPhone and Boss DS-1 instead equivalent. You are correct in that some guitar pedals haven’t changed in 30 years, but those aren’t pedals that have computers inside of them. I agree with you that if worked then it works now, but there are a small minority of people who will find it lacking
I can adjust every routing option and every parameter in every fx, amps and cabs in seconds with my Helix in a gig scenario. Couldn’t do that with my FM9. Sonically neither of them sound like a real amp (but both good tools) so sent the FM9 back.
I get that. I’ve always said the Helix/HX Stomps are great because if you want simplicity you got it. The tube screamer only has the three knobs the tube screamer has IRL

Hey Ryan! Thank you for putting together this comprehensive tutorial. Note about minute 18:20: You can set that in Global Settings > Footswitches > Stomp Select. You have the option to choose from the following: - Off - Touch - Press - Both I have it set to "Both," just like you. I believe that's how it comes pre-configured. Note 2 about minute 41:26: Regarding adjustments to the pedal parameters beyond just turning them on or off, I have some presets from a Christian artist named David Hislop from Bethel Music. He figured out how to make these changes, though I'm not entirely sure how he did it. In the Editor, there’s a camera icon that represents Snapshot Mode next to the parameter that is set to change with the snapshot. For example, if the parameter is "Feedback," the icon appears before the "F" in the parameter list. This indicates that the parameter will adjust based on the snapshot settings. He usually tweaks effect parameters like gain, bass cut, treble cut, feedback, and more. All these parameters are displayed in the BYPASS/CONTROLLER ASSIGN section. I haven’t figured out exactly how he manages these adjustments, but it’s a useful feature to explore. I'd be happy to send it over so you can check it out if you'd like.
Yeah I am thinking this might be a can only do on a pedal instead of doing it within HX Edit... HX Edit seems to limit a few things that you can do on the pedal...
My friend, every stereo product can be mono, just use one output. Your power amp, is not stereo if it only has one input, it's very common for people to use two cabs even if their signal is mono. Makes it so you can fill a room at lower volume. Also, you wouldn't want to run one of the speaker outputs to a cab and the other to the PA, that would be sending a powered signal to a line input and would most certainly cause a fire. The reason a product like this doesn't necessarily need an FX loop is because everything you'd normally put in an FX loop sounds almost the same, and/or has an even greater impact on the sound if it's applied to the signal after the microphone. (in the case of this product, after the output section) Just by putting your other FX pedals that you'd want in your FX loop connected to the output of the pedal will have alllllllmost the exact effect as if it were in a fake FX loop. Only limitation is you wouldn't be able to put a physical pedal in front of an emulated effect in the unit. Now, the main reason you'd really want an FX loop on something like this is so you could properly utilize the DI output. The DI output can be ran very long distances, like from a stage to a the mixing board 50 feet away without signal loss/degradation. The lack of an FX loop means that any pedal you put after the Kemper cannot be sent to the DI, so you'd have to probably buy another DI.
I guess that was my point i was getting at that I didnt make clear, if you want to use say the reverb or delay within the pedal but wanted to add a chorus pedal afterwards... but yeah i hear ya. I think most people are using this only for the amp sims and not necessarily the built in FXs

My Mooer ge-300 do the same i can modulate what i want volume, tone, rate, etc... Everything i want, just have to program what i want and save it in my preset.
Minute 42:00. It's not true you cannot control individual parameters, like gain, level, mix, etc, within effects across snapshots. You simply have to go to the bypass/controller assign tab, then choose the parameter you want, assign it to snapshot with the lower menu, and you are done. That parameter will turn "white" (as opposed to yellow) and then you can save different values in different snapshots. You can do this with as many parameters as you want. You can also change midi commands across snapshots and so on. It's quite flexible.
Yes, it's costly. But Fractal Audio has a long history of continued support and firmware updates/upgrades - adding new/updated amp models, IRs, effects, and even dynamic cabinet ("Dyna-Cab") models. Over time, the initial cost premium works itself out over potentially years of use.
Yes! They are highly customer focused and want to support their products long after the latest model comes out. I ran my Axe FX 2 up until this past January. And the only reason I got rid of it was so I could get the floor unit
I have several from the early 90’s that are great , haven’t bought anything recent from warmoth , they were all pawnshop buys in Portland Oregon and Vancouver Washington back in the day .
