Derek, thanks for the podcast and solid information about the NAICS codes. Your videos have been exceptionally helpful as we learn more about the space. We’re just getting into a federal contracting space and building out the criteria of the types of codes. We want to go after using the middleman strategy. Or incorporating the blue ocean methodology and looking for codes that have low barriers entry that can be scalable with ticket items within the SAP guidelines. We’re looking for ones also that have low competition. Using a criteria like that what are some codes that come to mine that you think would be operating in the blue ocean?
I understand the questions, but you can't really lean into the question that way. The reason is every contracting officer treats every NAICS codes differently, even though the NAICS codes themselves are "different from eachother". One CO could put a job under one code, and another put the same job under a different code. This is why I say literally every bid is different. The only way to find answers is in the trenches. Very quickly, planning, spreadsheets, and "niching down" goes out the window, and you have to look at every job individually as if you were shopping for your next house. As I share in my book, we are not romantical about the industry, we are romantical about the deal. Maybe one industry (Naics codes) seems like blue ocean for one bid, but the next bid you can't find subcontractors for it because it's so remote. Multiple factors are at work simultaneously. So, since we have to look at every deal individually, this massively increases the importance of our ability to quickly find opportunities and make bid/no-bid decisions. We have to do the unscalable, but at least we can good really good at it.
Man I had a grounds keeping contract pop up in my area, I have no idea how to bid it but a company called me to sub it out and I figured out it was a government contract, how can I bid accordingly and win ?
Telling you how to bid is not something I can accomplish in a YT comment. I’m also confused, a company won’t call you to sub it out. They will call you to be a sub. Are you a sub that self performs work?
Is there a website(s) or a resource to decode these solicitations? It’s hard to even figure out what the nsn is to know the exact product they’re wanting, then there’s multiple options for packing, labels, etc. I have studied govcon for months & have worked with our apex & still can’t figure out how to decipher solicitations. On one solicitation, I even asked questions trying to see how they wanted a product packed & the person literally just copied & pasted a section of the solicitation & sent it back to me. Am I missing some websites to break the codes & references?!? It’s so frustrating! No wonder so few small businesses do govt contracting. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciate. I’ve got your book ordered too.
I understand the frustration. It very much is learning a second language. I might be able to help some, but I don't know if as much as you need. Based on your comment, you are looking at supplies and manufacturing. I focus on services, so it's my exact field. A lot of the SOL language and terminology can carry over from supplies to services, but not all of it. Deciphering solicitations as a whole is something that I teach. I go through many examples in my SAM Bids LIVE episodes where we do 3-4 quickly per episode over an hour. I also dive more in depth to solicitation sections and government forms in my course. But I don't know if that would help you. It may or it may not. Every bid is different. I think it would be helpful to review (say) 10 bids. Identify the common information you are struggling to understand or find across all of them. You don't know what you don't know, so identifying what you don't know across a sampling of bids is an empowering next step. Without some more clarity, just deciphering an entire solicitation is a little vague for me to respond to in a way that would be helpful for you.

Hey, watched thru your youtube channel and liked what I saw. I live in Sweden and might get into goverment contracting. Seems really hard to win a contract, you’ll probably lose 9/10 bids and it could take months before you win a contract, if you do… however I belive it’s a bit of a numbers game and I might just try it. As I mentioned, I live in Sweden. Dont you have to be a US citizen? Is it not a geopolitical matter for example Sweden was not a NATO country (it just became it this year), could it not be any trouble with dealing with the US. It might be possibly to make bids without being American, but impossible to win a bid since the goverment would rather chose a company that’s american, and adds to the country’s GDP?

Ton's of lessons learned already. We went from idea and concept to invoicing, and it's a lot to learn, but it is possible and absolutely a great way to build a business if you put the work in. If you make enough free-content and provide the value that generates a huge audience then RU-vid can be a source of continuous revenue beyond what the gov con business can generate as well. Seek to build huge audience and following by doing the right thing and perhaps expanding the scope of what videos you create. I am early in the game and I’m actually shooting videos of me walking through the entire bid process from cradle to grave
Sounds awesome! I've learned on RU-vid, the more different format types of content you create, the less views and engagement each video gets. Essentially, people who subscribe to a video, are looking for more of that specific type of video. I've created a fragmented audience make the different type of content I thought my audience would want. In RU-vid land, the formula seems to be to pick something and stick with it and be very consistent.

Welcome! You can put the focal point on the services you plan to offer and the agencies intend to target. Don’t overthink the cap statement, though. Instead, start bidding as quickly as you can so you can start learning.

I think most of your subs will say you are a very knowledgeable, transparent, and caring person. I bought your book first, and without reading it, I bought your course on 7/4. I knew from all the awesome information you shared for free that your course had to be phenomenal, and I was right! I went through the whole course once and plan on going back over it again in detail after vacation. I am so excited to start because I feel I can actually do this!Sure I may mess up the first couple times, but I'm okay with that! Also, can I just say that you have every right to charge what you want to charge for your 10+ years of knowledge? And for people to expect you to just give it away for free or cheap is just freaking mind-boggling! Hey Derek, this is Mahlon. I would say you should do 2 types of courses and/or books. One source for beginners, which you already have, and another source of advanced curriculum that would explain all the rest of the material that's not recommended for beginners. With both sources available, no one can claim negativity otherwise. Basically, you're giving all the people what they want regardless of where they are within their GovCon journey

There are a handful of greedy youtubers which are milking the gov con platform and you personally did a interview with one of them, why did you do that??? I like your channel I hope you keep going, and your one of the ethical one that says volumes about you. One more thought if gov contracting has so much money in it why bother robbing youtubers for paid courses, example one gov con expert claims to have made 75 million in contracts and growing you know who.
I’ve done several interviews in the past months to promote the book. I’m one who actually enjoys teaching because I’m passionate about helping people. Our winter semester was a blast, but then I had health issues kick in. I don’t feel like I’m robbing anybody because I offer a course; it’s quite good. But after I left my company, I signed a 2-year NDA and started down the consulting path and never turned back. For those who are still actively bidding, I don’t know why they also would want to be teaching/offering course work. Appreciate the feedback and perspective. I intend to dig my heels in on this and push forward.
Hey Derek, You were one of the last people I've found in this space. I bought your book last week and am almost done with it. You speak the truth from what I can tell. Other's in this same space glorify, romanticize, and make it sound too good to be true. That's actually what brought me into the space to begin with. But once I did even a few days worth of research, I realized it was all fluff. Not saying these characters aren't right and their methods don't work, but I could see the half-truths. You spell it out with no BS and exactly what is real. And I appreciate that honesty. Don't worry about what other's are saying about you and your content. What they lack is exactly what you are showing and they are afraid. Keep up the good fight brother. Excited to get more into this Gov Con business. I need someone I can trust. Eagles don't mind the pecking crows, they just fly higher and higher, leaving the crows behind.

Well you asked for our opinion, so here goes --- you sound frustrated with an issue that you can't control. You can't control what other people say or do. Since it is obvious that you are struggling to deal with that issue, maybe it's time to cut your losses and move on to something else. Maybe it's time to stop trying to fight against the competition and do something else that you find fulfilling. I say this because I used to be a Financial Advisor but SO many other Financial Advisors were saying and doing things that were borderline unethical, and I got tired of trying to clean up other people's messes. I walked away and changed careers. I love helping people, too, but when it started causing me to be frustrated and pissed off, I knew it was time to walk away and find another way to earn a living I know that is not what you want to hear, but the truth will set you free.
I appreciate it. It doesn’t bother me to hear that feedback. It’s a fair point. I don’t feel called to throw in the towel or do something else as of yet. That’s why I’m trying to solve this apparent dilemma so I can continue.
Derek, I have your book and have a few of your a la carte services like “scripts to use when taking subcontractors” it’s gold. This is my advice. focus on highlighting the testimonials that you already have in your channel(and get new ones as well) people cannot deny the experience from other people that you have helped. We identify and learn from people that were at the place that new gov con students are which is confused and skeptical. Reupload the old testimonials with new catchy thumbnails(you can hire someone to do this) and the title needs to have quote that you or the other person said that grabs the attention of someone that finds you for the 1st time, you are basically working on your hook. Also make sure that you make shorts with the best quotes from popular videos. Check out the email I sent you it has more info/advice
First and foremost, l don’t like writing reviews nor do I spend much time commenting on social media, just not my thing. However with your systems and approach l appreciate so much that i can't help but respond with thanks and gratitude for all your time and effort. I found you first and read your book first. As someone who only found out about GovCon in March of this year, found your channel (luckily) and your course (after researching everything) - read your book (my business operating system) - so for a very modest investment of $926.97 that was my entire startup cost into GovCon. With your training and support systems l have been able to submit an average of 10-15 bids per month (by myself) beginning May, June and then July and with my first win (5-year BPA) on July 24th (win comes from the first 10 bids l submitted) with zero experience in the industry. These are tangible, provable results following your system. The Legal Middleman Method and system actually makes falsifiable predictions about the future which cannot be said about the conventional approaches. So if we are to scrutinize the Legal Middleman system from Discover GovCon then Register then Bidding - the hypothesis being “The Legal Middleman Method is the shortest distance to winning a federal contract in less than a year” Purely approaching this using the scientific method, you can consider me an independent researcher (who found you first and not last) - who has run the experiment and l have failed to falsify the “Legal Middleman Method” in less than three months. Now under normal circumstances, l would give it a full year and if I succeeded in falsifying it then it would mean that I have won nothing. Unfortunately for me l failed in my initial attempts to falsify the Legal Middleman Method which makes it a possibly robust and antifragile system that can stand the test of time. This is independent of all other inessential variables like the naysayers or people finding you last or you feeling like you are a firefighter. I don’t believe you are a firefighter nor a quack. You are the “signal” and not the “noise”. Quite honestly if you were to leave the industry my level of certainty would be under question but nonetheless l would continue. As for the conventional approach which I never bought into, l say this. When Theoretical Physicist Richard Feynman wanted to test whether someone wants to fool you or not, he used “the Ordinary Language Test”. Long story short, if it can’t be explained to an ordinary person in plain language and terms so that they broadly understand it - then something is wrong. When someone relies on a complicated approach Occam's Razor, the simplest explanation (LMM) is usually the correct one. LMM has fewer assumptions, it's the better approach hands down! Ultimately it will be the responsibility of each individual to make judgments and choices based on whatever bias they rely on in their decision-making process of which you don’t have any control over. The important thing to do is to keep iterating and finding unique ways to market and message the package you are offering using powerful copywriting techniques to place yourself in front of people like me.

Is it possible for a Europeans citizen to get a gov contract for delivering something like a couple television to a army base? I’ve seen a contract like that in the past but I can’t find the website anymore for that.
