I don’t understand why in Game 5, instead of playing GEAN, Jackson did not play SONDAGE hooking S onto HARM. Why did both commentators say they don’t see any bingo?
good lord wellington has gone up several positions in my personal top ten with these games he played in this tournament, the man is a strategic genius!
FYI: In game 7, Michael Fleck actually held on to FRE in the exchange, but the commentators didn't note that, understandably -- as the F wasn't shown on the rack during the exchange. Note that he couldn't have exchanged the F and then drawn it back, as at the time of the exchange there was already an F played on the board (FOPS).
Love the commentator's pronunciation of FRABJOUS, as though it were a French word. It's actually one of the nonsense words coined in the poem Jabberwocky: "Oh frabjous day! Callou, callay!" He chortled in his joy. This prompts me to wonder whether all the Jabberwocky words have made it into the Scrabble dictionary. A handful of them have become semi-common in everyday speech, but FRABJOUS definitely isn't one of them.
I link summoned my AccessCode Talker and OTK'd the challenging duelist! Sorry, I keep messing around with people pretending I think Scrabble is actually YuGiOh! I can't even come up with basic words when I play scrabble, BUT I love words so much, I watch a lot of scrabble gameplay. Autism baybay!
Matt you do such a great job of including all the different aspects of commentary. Even though I couldn't watch live, a post-event watch is just as interesting.
SO GOOD to have y'all back. Matt, your Jays need to hit a hot streak in July, I'm rooting for them! These past live streams have becoming my bedtime ASMR when I need to have something soothing for my brain. The amount of times I've heard Matt and Josh take hot sauce shots at this point is hilarious! 10/10 rewatchable content, amazing commentary, appreciate all your efforts Will, and all behind the scenes making it happen for us scrabble obsessed folks at home. Cheers.
Definitely agree on sharing division 2 games! As a fringe division 1 player, I would love to be able to spread the page. Especially if I can get some Lake George action 😊
This kind of scrabble streaming could be twice as successful if the commentators invested in some decent microphones. Its quite hard to concentrate and listen to the muffled commentary, no matter how good and interesting it is.
100% disagree. I honestly don't notice their mics at all, and I'm not the only one. There aren't enough people not watching bc of the mics to justify the cost
I've only recently began spectating scrabble, but as a poet who began studying the dictionary and pronunciations at a young age (about 13) so know many of these words (though would never begin to be able to discover them based only on their constituent parts!), hearing them pronounced wrong by people who can spot them so effortlessly is a bit, say, disarming, lol. It really jumped out to me hearing "Eudaimon" (more commonly used in the form "Eudaimonia", which has no direct, single word translation from the Greek but is, roughly, a state of well-being and flourishing) pronounced and stressed as "You Damon", rather than "YOU-day(/deh)-moan", closely followed by "yagi" (the antennae - in my estimation the most aesthetically rich antennae), pronounced as rhyming with "Magi" !! Typing this out now seems silly, but it was silly to me too!
They've enough to do learning the words. Also deliberate mispronunciations can help recall. Coinmate, for example, if pronounced 'wrongly' is amusing. Isn't yagi an 'antenna' with many yagis being antennae, however these are pronounced ?
We often learn to pronounce words based on the arrangement of their vowels - especially words like EUDAIMON. It makes it easier to spell them correctly over the board. But your pedantry makes you a perfect addition to the community. Welcome! (and if you think I'm being obnoxious, I'm really not. We're all pedantic here)
