The reason Duran got into shape for moore he was promised a big payday against Hagler 5 million at this point of Duran‘s career he got into shape when there was money, big money to make. He was years past his prime
15 rd fight Hagler would have won. The wbc was the only 12rd championship fights. The IBF and the WBA was still 15rd championship fights. And they stripped him of their championships.
Sugar Ray Leonard was the reason I became a fight fan. I never really liked Hearns. But Hagler and Duran were great fighters. I think Hagler should have gotten a smaller ring.
One thing that gets lost in boxing robbery discussions, is when it’s only one judge that has a weirdo scorecard, but the other judges score it correctly, resulting in a majority decision win.
While his opponents are not great I also think they can be underrated too. Helenius had a vulnerable chin, but he also had just beaten 20-0, mandatory challenger Adam Kownacki twice and had beaten several ex-champs in the past. Audley Harrison was a gold-medalist, Liakhovhich was a ex-champion, Breazeale/Washington/Stiverne or even 32-2 Duhaupas were solid contenders. I do not think his number of title defenses means much since Klitschko was obviously the man at the time and really should have won the vacant belt that Wilder got for fighting Number 2 ranked heavyweight Povetkin, literally the best match-up that could have been made in the division at the time. Wilders argument for the Hall of Fame should be as a legendary puncher. Earnie Shavers never won a title and lost against several more skilled dudes like Lyle, Quarry, Young, Ali and Holmes but he is still far more of a respected or even legendary figure than a lot of paperchamps. Same for David Tua he was never champ but few people actually rank him below the champs he beat. (Ruiz, Rahman, Maskaev, Moorer might be a exception, maybe)
Sadly never he learned the basics. Focused on that right hand too much. ultimately that was his downfall. Great heart and always tried but his limited skillset failed him
@tupacalypse88 agreed. He had one party trick which took him further than most with multiple party tricks. He found a way to make that trick work well for him
A bit harsh, but mostly just stating facts. I do feel that Wilder was getting outboxed even in some of his lower level opponents like Szpilka and Duhaupas, until he ultimately knocked them out.
Good episode. I’d like to hear your opinions about Felix Pagan Pintor, I met him in Canastota with Calderon. Also that weird hypnotist in Steve Collins camp against Eubank.
Duran was unstoppable under Arcel and Brown in the 70’s. That is the greatest fighter trainer combo in my opinion. Imagine fighting prime duran with the knowledge of Arcel and Brown guiding him absolutely terrifying.
Lmfao I remember that victor ortiz interview cus I remember laughing my ass off that he said, "I'm here to support Diabetes" or something like that as opposed to Diabetes Awareness ;-;
I think Tyson vs Ribalta is a good judgement of this fight. Ribalta was huge & tough. Tyson said he was his strongest opponent. Mike didn’t knock him out and only put him on his ass a few times. And he’s pretty much a trash version of Foreman. That entire fight heavily relied on Tyson’s immense skill advantage. I feel like Tyson would be outpacing Ribalta the entire time, especially since Foreman is pretty slow. If he can keep up the momentum, he’d win on points or maybe a TKO. However, just like Frazier, if Tyson takes 1 or 2 blows he’d lose momentum & Foreman would be in control.
Great stuff. Surprised that Trevor Berbick didn’t make the episode. Marvin Johnson was in Canastota in 2019, health-wise he wasn’t all there at times. Chris Smith tried getting a bunch of west coast guys to visit the IBHOF, but they never responded to his emails. Thanks for the ACBHOF shoutout. Hope to see you there Aris. 😉🥊
Morrison did not really give me knuckleheads vibes. Taking a fight when he has the Lewis fight planned was risky and backfired, but it's not particularly dumber than many things other champions have done. The other points are just personal insults of his hairstyle, sleeping around, staying in his city and such.
Talking of Cortez I got to speak to Cortez the Referee and I asked him about the fight he reffed between Azumah Nelson & Jeff Fenech in 91 and he said ‘ oh I don’t remember referring that fight “ 😳😳
I went to the IBHOF in 2012 when Tommy Hearns got inducted. I couldn’t have picked a better weekend. I got to shake hands and have photos with Hagler ( my all time favourite boxing 🥊 idol) Plus Hearns, SRL, Donny Lalonde, Aaron Pryor who I got to buy a drink for in Grazianos awesome guy was Pryor. Micky Ward, Dicky Echland, John Mugabi, Marlon Starling, Kevin Kelley, Leon Spinks , Buddy Mcgirt, Terry Norris, Ray Mercer, George Chuvalo, Gerry Cooney, 🥊 No way I will get a better weekend than that. I haven’t been back since 🥊
Thing is the guys Usyk beat in Cruiserweights would be heavyweights in any other era. So you can look at Usyk whole career and measure it to past heavyweight greats.
I’ve tried and tried…but when you criticize Ali vs Usyk based on discipline AND the fact that Ali would occasionally come in out of shape…you’ve lost me. I’ll listen when Aris is on but I am done with Brin-Johnathan…the Matinee Idol sends his regards.
Usyk for me if he retires tomorrow is up there with some of the greatest fighters of all time and the greatest Cruiser weight fighters of all time, but Usyk can't have five fights at heavyweight and be counted as a all time heavyweight great. I would also argue that Usyk isn't even the best heavyweight of this generations. So pleased for Usyk, such a great fighter.
I still think the rematch as the making of being a 50/50 fight . Usyk has to create more angles and put in even a higher work rate . Fury has to come in fitter and has! To go to the body more because Usyk doesn’t like it down there plus Tyson was having success down there he just didn’t stay down there to Usyks body long enough I thought 💭 🥊
Scared for his life? Stop talking like everything is Reddit. He was showboating and it was funny. He hurt Usyk several times and after losing is necessarily the #2 hw in the world. He won a round after the knockdown.
