Seems like a fair review on your particular unit. I have the 078 (non S) and love it for daily use. Very consistent and good coffees. Only relatable thing for me is the popcorning and that if I RDT I need to push the beans in. Not really a problem for me. And yes, the button on the back is really weird but I have just picked one RPM and don't really bother with it. Other than that is is almost perfect for me.
This might be a fairly controversial point, but I would have to point out how much easier it is to create consistent grounds for filter coffee. The difference between 20-30 micron would hardly be noticeable for filter coffee... where an espresso can be ruined quite easily by this difference. And for the variable RPM being a set & forget setting... Variable RPM is the first reason I wanted this grinder. 😅
@@mitchdoescoffee also very fair points! I know some people have their Sculptor sideways so that the RPM button is easily accessible, but that's a solution that should not be needed since the button could just have been on the side in the first place. And yes, espresso is much less forgiving on a slight change in grind, fair point as well. I hope you did not take my comment as critique, was just pointing out my personal experience which is very positive on the 078 with turbo burrs.
I have 078 and I use a knocker before I grind, not after. I slowdose with rdt and use the puff bellows thing to push the beans. The only issue with it is popcorning and mess that comes with it.
@mitchdoescoffee there is an antipopcorning 3d printer thingy on Etsy that sits between the hopper and the lid, don't know how well it works. Coldstart and slow feeding do make a difference and it tastes better than 64mm ssp mp for filter so for now I will have to cope.
Ah yes. I'm 99% sure that the Delonghi machine is a slightly different version of this... and I have seen some other brands that look very similar also.
I have this grinder as Kickstarter backer. RDT is very true. Can't do it. Beans would get stuck. I can't say the same about the mess. I actually think the opposite. I must close the lid while grinding, otherwise, the popcorning is crazy. There aren't many particles getting out between the grinder shoot and the dosing cup. I don't have a problem with the RPM variation. Seems stable in my case. I also have minimal retention. I have cleaned the burrs several times, and there were close to nothing leftovers. I think your unit might be a "Monday" product. With Kickstarter it is hard to get any warranty service. I would still contact the brand though, and see what they say. But I think you have waited so long, that you are out of any warranty anyway.
By the way, the preinfusion hack does work. I have songlenorigin light roast coffee from Madagascar and it takes much of the brightness away. And for a regular espresso blend, the hack just makes the extraction that much smoother.
Do you have the grinder plugged in with an espresso machine running? That is what the pulsing sounds like to me, the motor pulses with the power draw of the espresso machine.
How does your grind setting indicator stay in place? I thought about adding a magnet to my 3D printed indicator, but the body of my 078S doesn't seem to be magnetic.
After seeing this video im soooo happy i went for the DF64 gen2 instead of this. Cost me $700, zero retention, no static and a beast of a motor. A little loud but i can live with that because it's consistent and I'm loving it.
I just purchased this 3 days ago. I couldnt find any recent video reviews, only initial reviews from 6 to 14 months ago. Ive been making espresso for 10+ years on my Breville Barista Express. I thought as much as i love coffee, espresso, i deserve an upgrade. I bought the white 078s (mostly for espresso, but occasionally grind up some beans for cold brew, french press. Maybe pour over, but not often, so the 078 turbo didnt really seem good for me). Anyway... Im afraid to even watch this video. My intention was for this to be my grinder for the next 10 years, and my next big purchase will be a better stand alone espresso machine. Is it bad enough to wareant trying to return it? I need to look ip their return policy for their USA based shop. Anyway, cheers!
I've had the 064S for 4 months and it's been fantastic. All of the complaints in this video seem pretty trivial. Just use RDT, make sure to push the beans that are stuck in the hopper in and use a funnel on your portafilter. For RPM, as far as we know, all it does is change the grind size. Which you can change with the front dial anyway. I have mine set at 1000 and never touch it. It's sleek, it's quiet and it makes great coffee. I love it
Like I mentioned in my video a couple of time, if you have one & it is working fine... definitely DO NOT have buyers remorse. I believe my particular grinder has more issues than most people.
two things got the 078 for pour over its been perfect after seasoning. as for the bursting into flames warrenty issue. these where certified by Australian standards and therefore wouldn't have the insurance issue you've mentioned. I don't get the same mess issue. RDT wouldn't due to tolerance causes the grinds to stick to the burrs causing retention and badley so hope you didn't even try it. 078s might have a difference as the tolerances are even tighter. but yeah does have issues which other grinders have sorted.
Thanks for this review! I nearly moved forward with purchasing this grinder after your original review, but I decided to wait for your "longer usage" review. Now I'm very thankful I did! I appreciate your honesty and being made aware of the issues you've experienced. Thanks Mitch!
Wow. These issues seem absolutely massive and shocking that they made it through quality control. Especially #2 & #3. What the hell?? I guess like you said on paper, a similar machine for that price range doesn't exist...but damn looks like they really cut some corners.. Edit: just listened to your machine...sounds like it's PULSING???? You should send that video to them and see if they say anything. Doesn't seem right at all.
Thank you for sharing. I was concerned I’d not get the quality of grinds I wanted with this grinder, especially after hearing the burrs may not have offered much clarity. And apparently it’s not easy getting aftermarket burrs in this, if any exist. That, plus the dial at the back, plus the knocker not being as good as advertised, I’m glad I didn’t pull the trigger. Really sucks too having a bad grinder and Timemore not doing anything. I feel that should all be warrantied. Happy with my DF64V
That's so cool. Could I ask for a favour? I'd love to share some of that roasting footage. Would it be possible for you to email me some raw footage???
@@mitchdoescoffee sure. I will ask my wife to reach out as she is the real coffee person. What is the email? Also, we can send you some green coffee sample to see what you think.
Loved your video!! Found it while trying to figure out why my Barista Express, this morning and after daily 12 years of use, sort it gave up and would trip the GFCI outlet upon hitting the ON button. I think seeing you operate that model may have convinced me to upgrade to it. Good idea? Is that a good upgrade for someone that enjoys making coffee on the express but is ready for the next level?
Thanks for tuning in! 🙏 Yes, the Dual boiler would be the best Breville in my opinion. However, check out some other brands like Gaggia & Rancillio as they will give you a far better espresso & last a lifetime if looked after.
Awesome! That machine wasn't as readily available here. So I've only seen a couple of them... Until Costco were selling older versions at a VERY low price.
Well I upgraded the grinder burrs in my BrevOrc and I assure you, its worth doing! Yes, Im a coffee snob but this is an awesome all in one and mines been refurbed twice now and then I upgraded the grinding burrs. Yes, it takes a little effort to find the right setting manually on the burr ring but once its nailed and you get the fill, dose and grind right! Its a great buy used, even after all these years! Mine must be 10 years old now and has another 5-6 left.
Hey mate. Thanks for tuning in. There are LOTS of alternatives for tinder out there... anything from dried leaves to fuel soaked cloth. This tin actually came with a Ferro rod that I purchased.
Man, that's sweet, but why bother? I get developing the skill to build a fire without any tools, but ferro rods' (another modern tool, just like a lighter) usefulness eludes me. If one is to worry to always carry a ferro rod at all times in case one needs to build a fire, better to carry a lighter instead.
Ferro rod can get wet & still spark, it won't run out of gas, you can drop it without it breaking (even if it does, it still works) and MANY more reasons why it is a far better tool.
@@mitchdoescoffee Not my experience. Ferro needs the sparks to catch - which won't happen if material is wet-ish. A flame WILL get such stuff to burn. A butane lighter is worth for some 3000 uses - which incidentally is about the time a ferro rod becomes useless due to abration, so moot point. And no, a butane lighter won't break if you drop it unless you are into skydiving ;-) And know what? If your butane lighter runs out of fuel, you still can use it as a ferro rod. Checkmate. 🙂
Was suspect about this thing... But after using it, its really been in the back of my mind, not sure i go out enough to justify it, but for anyone that is considering it... This baby is the real deal! Really quality espresso at the press of a button. Also.. "You know who you are" 😳😅
Hey mate. Thanks for reaching out. I've done some research & I really can't find anything that confirms or denies this. I would recommend popping the air filter out and having a quick look. 👍
Hey mate. Unfortunately not, as the hot water spout is only controlled by a button (rather than a dial) But will extensive mods, you could absolutely adapt it.
Very nice! I have exactly the same machine in white color from the factory. I replaced the shower screen with the E&B nanotechnology (E61200RNT) and loving the results in extraction. The only strange thing is that on the app, for instance, the boiler at 126 Celsius gives a pressure of 1.45 bar, but at the gauge, there always shows a difference of 0.15 bar lower. Is that the same with yours? Also, mine came configured with extraction pressure at 8.5bar by the gauge.
Nice! Yes, Nano tech is amazing! These mechanical guages will always show a little discrepancies, but the difference will also make very minimal change to the coffee. It is very easy to adjust to pump pressure (especially when you have a hole in the side of the machine) 😅 I would recommend dialling it in with a scace 👍
Hello, I really like your channel, very technical, I'm looking for some guidance. I had the Breville oracle touch for a couple of years and it kept breaking, l'm looking to get a different machine, I've been watching reviews and l'm between the Bianca v3 and the Sanremo cube, but can't decide, I'm looking for a reliable machine, that makes good coffee, about 3 cups a day. I like the features on the Bianca, but don't necessarily need them, looking for best build quality and reliability, is one better than the other ?
Hi! Thanks for reaching out & tuning in My opinion will be a little one sided as I am an overall SanRemo fan. But only for the reason of great products & fantastic relationships in the industry. Where in the world are you located?
@@mitchdoescoffee I live in Mexico, it's like trying to catch a shark with a flour sieve. I managed to list my item, but now they stop my access, typical big company, it is only 4 months old.
@tedalen529 I wouldn't think so... 3000 units I limited enough to be cool, but not limited enough to be worth a silly amount... unless the original artist turns out to be a descendant of Da Vinci 😅
For me, I use a 21g IMS basket with 18 grams in and 36 out. Wet Weber filter at the bottom, very very gentle tamp, weber filter on top and then screen puck. 30 sec.
@@mitchdoescoffee, Oh yes. You get a more accurate taste of the real coffee. If the coffee roasting process is not good, you will taste it. Usual extraction will give nice flavour but it will not reveal every aspects of the roasting.
