Thanks for the insight guys. Good episode. Those $12/kg bag from woolies have always perplexed me, the Robusta thing makes sense now. Will be interested to see the industry (and consumers) change and adapt as prices go up.

Thanks mate. Yes there are definitely some tricks in the background that drop costs. Hopefully it all leads to a better coffee & happy farmers.

@@mitchdoescoffee that's it man. Like we joked about with the Aldi coffee..some of these guys are getting absolutely wrecked while big companies not only Damage the supply chain, they weaken the whole industry by selling subpar beans at a lowered cost...and while there might be a place for that in the market... The more the consumer is educated about good coffee(thanks to episodes and people like this) hopefully the less we see consumers turning to those kinds of options. Imagine going into Macca's and asking for a single O pulled at two bar 😎 that's the future I want to leave for my kids 🤣

In my area the cafes have taken to the race to the bottom. More automation, less barista skill, and I find the personableness of the new baristas is very…meh. So I am paying a premium for average espresso and the chit chat with the barista is not there anymore. There’s a few quality shops in the city nearby but they all close early! Considering all things, it makes sense that the good coffee is $20+ USD per 350g bag. I love the art and saving money though so I get some good specialty green coffee to roast at home and some mid-grade beans for decent medium roasts for my wife and I to make flat whites or white chocolate mochas from, or straight espresso

It's getting tough out there... hopefully things shift & we can all be enjoying a better cup.

@@mitchdoescoffeeI sure hope so! I'm really curious about the trajectory. In my area, which is rural, I see a few things right now: drive through coffee is booming, people sticking to what they know at home like Folgers, but more people I am seeing are developing an interest in making tasty coffee at home. I think the latter is driven by people wanting their tasty coffee but not being able to go out like they used to. However, I've seen the spectrum for that span from Nespresso to buying specialty coffee bags

Yes, one massive lesson I've learnt over the recent years is that convenience will beat quality 9 times out of 10. So baristas that genuinely care aren't able to sustain their passion with only the 1 out of 10 willing to put in a little effort.

@@mitchdoescoffee sad but true :( I sometimes feel a lot of the arts of things aren’t appreciated, just what works. I’d say pragmatism has won the hearts of most in western culture
