Welcome to the I Tried to Be Straight Podcast! We both grew up in Christian culture where being gay wasn't acceptable. After years of struggling with our sexualities, we both recently came out of the closet. We're here to unpack those journeys, and learn more about the struggle of accepting your sexuality in a culture where it's not acceptable. We're entering into the stories of others, digging into theology, learning more about gay culture, and trying to give a glimpse of just how hard it is to try to be straight.
one could assume that Satan created all "religions" with their hatred, contempt, exclusion and oppression of people who are different or who believe and live differently. Your behavior of submitting to this superstition of the "Christians" is an offering to your enemies, it is a form of Stockholm Syndrome. Gays used to take refuge under the protection of their partners and hoped to avoid questions from family and friends... about girlfriends, etc. Some probably thought "it" could be prayed away! Insiders say around 50% of all RCC clergy are gay... and at the same time homophobic... (see Georg and Josef) Today, the large Christian sects are worried about recruiting new members, and are recruiting their priests for Europe, for example, from Africa or other countries, where the control still works and the phrase: whose bread I eat, whose song I sing applies to the "seminarians..." Unfortunately, this is the case with all sects that call themselves religions, except for Buddhism, which is not a religion but a "teaching" I am very concerned about what is happening in the USA, where Christians are becoming the Taliban of the West and priests are calling for the murder of LGBTQ+ and especially trans people, and nobody is intervening against it... they are starting real witch hunts and if the "orange narcissist" comes to power... the clocks are generally running backwards Nobody is asking the question where was the almighty when Christian priests raped children all over the world and God's representative protected and hid the crimes. Still too few people draw the consequences and leave the nonsense organizations in all different variations that they belong to depending on which country they were born in. Yes, as Spinoza said, as long as there are stupid people... they will find their victims, because they offer asylum for them.

All of what Brandan said was very mind blowing, but I would say that the country and culture we live in is a decisive factor also. I'm a gay mexican man, living in Mexico, raised catholic and became a devout conservative catholic on my own during my teen and young adult years, and I'm now deconstructing and accepting myself thanks to US progressive and LGBT-affirming Christianity. It just really blows my mind how Christianities (as Brandan said it) in the US are so so diverse and mind blowing. Here in Mexico, Christianity is 80% roman catholicism (which is moderate conservative) and 20% conservative protestant-evangelical churches. Progressive and LGBT-affirming Christianity in Mexico is so small and almost non-existent. The LGBT community in Mexico is mostly secular and irreligious and there´s hardly any interest at all from queer mexicans to reconcile their LGBT identities with any religion. It just really blows my mind how in the US, Christianity has become so so diverse in so many ways, unlike Christianity here in Mexico, even when our countries are neighbors.
Repent and accept Jesus. The real Jesus not a queer or gay affirming Jesus. That's a fake Jesus. You cannot recreate a faith.. Jesus is the truth and the light and the only way to heaven. By believing in HIM and TURNING AWAY from sin. BEING BORN AGAIN. NOT AFFIRMING LIFESTYLE OF SIN. REPENT. THIS LIFE IS SHORT..GOD WILL BRING AND IT IS BRINGING JUDGMENT. Repent and be saved.
In my spiritual journey, my guide was studying the philosophy of Spinoza. Obtaining an understanding of the Tenakh and Hebrew Scriptures gave me a clearer understanding of Christianity. In short, if you want to follow Jesus then go to James. Keep up the great work!

Ryan said " a lot of people use religion as a beard " As someone who grew up catholic with all the " flamboyant " priests and brothers and masculine looking and acting nuns I can attest to what he is saying to be true
Fascinating. I often find my self wonder about how religion, society, and my own personality acted in keeping me in the closet. It was interesting hearing so many of the same things I told myself coming from someone who had a completely different life. I guess the fear and shame are the same, even if you are a 6'7" NFL player. Great interview.
Thank you so much for this video! So good. I have felt for a long time that the Christian community has lost its curiosity and ability to question. Honestly, i believe that the rotten core of Evangelical theology that has been a stumbling block for them embodying Christ and living the Sermon on the Mount is the belief that the world is going to get worse and worse until Jesus comes back. It has caused them to question everything that looks like progress. Medicine, psychology, anti-racism, all of it. It cant be good because the world is getting more and more sinful. It can't grt BETTER. Even the me too movement was distrusted even though it fought against hidden sexual sin. So, the idea that we can grow and adapt and progress can't be accepted in theae communities. The fight against accepting LGBTQ people sounds just like the arguments made against abolishing slavery, taking care if the planet, holding sexual abusers in the church accountable and a host of other things. At rhe core is a belief that the end times is right around rhe corner and ever step of progress is a deception of the enemy. Its so frustrating.
I can confirm Meg's comment about the affect of suppressing one's sexuality. I did this for over twenty years until my body started to rebel, I won't give details here, but you can imagine. Even then, dealing with the guilt of how my body was rebelling, it took a few more years before I understood what was happening. Now that I am out, I try to listen to what my body is telling me.
Ryan is such a sweet guy! It is so important that he talks about suicidal ideation. It is hard to believe, but it is out there where you least expect it.
The only way to heaven is through Jesus. He is God in the flesh. He died for your sins so that you who believe may go to heaven. Right now we are living in the end times. I hope everyone knows Jesus before it’s to late ❤
Jesus forgives but he also say “go and sin no more”. We are to love people, not their sins. The bible clearly states that a person having relations with another of their own sex is a sin. So yeah we are to love “gay” people as everyone else but to enable someone’s sins is to embolden them to sin, which makes you just as wrong. 1 Timothy 5:22 says, “Do not participate in the sins of others.” We are not called to judge. Even Jesus said he didn’t judge but only the Father can judge.
