In 2020, we left the city life to start a Homestead in the country. This channel is dedicated to showing you what the Homestead lifestyle is all about and sharing our journey towards eating healthy, organic foods. Our content includes healthy grocery hauls, cooking, recipes, gardening and general homesteading.
If your meat is frozen hard and your lights go out, it will stay frozen for 24 hours with no problems. Growing up, in the country, whenever a bad storm was heading in, mom would have us take out the meat she was going to use for a couple of days. That way when the power went off, we didn’t have to go into our deep freezer. Dad always made sure that he had gas and the generator on the ready if it was off longer than 24 hours.
Every flock usually has 1 rooster for protection. I personally have seen a rooster attack a chicken hawk that somehow got into the coup and then got stuck in there. I had to open the coup to free the hawk it was scared to death of that rooster. Additional roosters are harvested for meat. It is the reality. People taking free roosters online are most likely eating them. Fyi. Very rarely, they have lost their rooster to a dog or coyote and need a new flock protector.
Oh and when I had 2 rooster brother chicks. One was obviously dominant. The other did not crow and walked like hens. He kept himself low in pecking order. Almost to appear like a hen and not cause conflict. I felt bad gor it and gave it to my neighbor. I was right, it was a rooster. His feathers blossomed and he started crowing once the threat of an alpha was gone. Very interesting.
I was, not sure if I will continue. Why? Because they have a very flawed system for inventory. Once again, my order has been shipped missing items. One particular item I am now going on 3 months to get filled, with no assurance that I will actually get it next time. The items say in stock when I put them in my cart, and when I check out there is no notice that the item is not available, yet by the time I get notice of my order, the item (S) are not available. In addition, I find that their prices are not much lower, or any lower than in the stores most of the time. I do like that bulk sizes that are available, if you can get them.
I have loved all of my roosters but one. In my experience it seems like the dominant rooster runs the show and the other one just hangs out as part of the flock. Not sure if that's been luck or what. I do know it's hard to get rid of them when you've raised them from the egg. We had an Ameraucana hen that I would have sworn was a boy, but she began laying eggs.
In duluth, mn and superior, wi area one needs to be there when the truck arrives, ridiculous!!!! Someone should be able to store it in a freezer or refrigerator til it can be picked up after work.
Great vid, I've wondered when we should start looking for clues in our own group of chicks. Otherwise, my real question is, have you ever had another website called "survival with Craig"? You sure look like him.
We want to restore our deck too! The previous owners did a quick paint job to sell the house, turns out they did a terrible job and it’s peeling up like crazy. We want to get the paint off and then restore it like this. Any tips there?
Organic everything is great. However, to be clear, already ground flours of any grain starts to lose its nutritional value at the moment it is milled. Buying huge quantities of already milled flour defeats the purpose. Best would be to buy the whole grain (as it will store for many years) , then grind it as needed.
Unfortunately things have changed since they went nationwide. I've ordered with them for years and have been quite happy even with some bumps in the road, but I got nothing in my last order a month ago. No explanation, no apology- nothing. My order just disappeared. So, I just placed this month's order and re-ordered all the items I didn't get last month. I wanted to also order garden starts as I do every year. But I figured I shouldn't depend on them for my garden starts this year so I only ordered one garden item- the pole beans I have ordered for years. I just was informed they're out of stock. I'm anxious to find out what items I re-ordered show up this week, if any.
Don't buy into the hype it's no longer cheaper to do this, unless you own the cow. With butcher prices, the feed prices and GREED. I can save more by taking my money and buying from store when they reduce the price, take it home seal it and freeze it. I've been doing it like this for 3 years now. My 2nd freezer is always full of steaks and rost and brisket. But hey go ahead and spend a grand or two and see just how much meat you get, enjoy the hamburger!
I'm not allowed any roosters. Have brought 4 pullets and had 3 roos. Rehomed unknowingly to a rooster runner. Current have suspicions on two more out of 4. They refuse to take them back. Only breeder around for mikes
I've been an Azure Standard customer for about five years. The one big annoying thing that Azure does is inform us pretty late that they are delivering the next day. It's really inconvenient. I understand that problems with the schedules and don't really mind having a mostly clear day for an Azure delivery but now if I want to order from Azure Standard I have to make sure that I don't have appointments for the next day. Btw the Azure drop people that I've used are exceptionally nice.
I just placed my order and have to pick up on Tuesday....at 11pm?! Have you had that experience before? We are in the mountains and work during the week, thought late night was a bit strange.😕
@@lesliem.534 I've never had to pick up an order that late. I admire the drivers for making it when the weather is challenging but Azure is asking a lot of us when they surprise with inconvenient times and it's too late to back out. I wrote to them and said if they switch days on us we should get a discount. Then I would get prepared for if that happened and maybe they'd try harder not to give us bad times.
My favorite thing to order from Azure is the Rumiano organic unsalted butter. I make my own ghee...and this butter is the best. It is out of stock frequently.
@@chenyansong that seems pretty unrealistic for most of the year unless you live in a warm climate... plus that sounds like a lot of work haha a lot of rural areas are pretty poor though so that makes sense
