Living in Canada in Zone 5 means that growing food outdoors is not a year-round event. In an effort to increase my self-sufficiency and the amount of organic homegrown food that I can produce I started looking to what and how I could grow year-round by growing inside. I primarily rely on growing food hydroponically using multiple AeroGardens, my Click & Grow 25 and my two Rise Gardens. Though, I do also use my grow tent, grow lights and also grow using mushroom kits.
It is good but it does have limitations. For me it is too cramped with the hole spacing. But I love that the lights raise and lower which other systems (Rise Garden) do not have.
Thanks Donna! It’s amazing how delicious and FRESH the homegrown ginger is. There is no comparison! I have some growing outdoors in my front garden right now and I can’t wait to harvest it.
Hands down my favourite hydroponic system to grow more at scale is the Rise Garden. it comes at a higher price point but I truly believe it is worth it. I have one and if it ever broke I would buy another one. I have a video comparing the AeroGaden Farm to the Rise Garden, that may help give you some more info. Hope that helps! I have a lot of experience trying to trap fruit flies. All you have to do is use the apple cider vinegar with a drop of soap and put it in a wine or bottle with small neck. Works great and takes 1 minute. I leave 3 or 4 all over the kitchen and they take care of all the flies and blend in!
I wish you had spent a bit more time explaining the SEED WATER method after all it's the one that seemed to work best, I watched the video twice and still have no idea of what seeds you're talking about. Thanks for your time.
That’s a great point! Sorry about that. When I save tomato seeds from the garden I fill a little mason jar with some water and then squeeze in the tomato jelly/seeds and leave it to sit for a few days. I was using that leftover “seed water” after I had fished out the seeds. Hope that helps
Someone else asked the same thing. Sorry about that. Amazing! It’s definitely addictive! I just bought 10 new kinds of basil and about 4 more kinds of cilantro so can’t wait to try growing all those and see the difference!
Great question. Personally I never suggest growing more than two plants in a sprout (with the middle hole covered). Mint and basil can both get really big. But give it a try, see how it goes! You would have to stay on top of the pruning. Hope that helps!
I wouldn't buy either of these, but I definitely wouldn't buy the Click & Grow. * You're forced to use their proprietary pods * The amount of growing space is TINY! Basically, the Click and Grow is a subscription service. You want to grow anything? Buy their pods. Or I guess you could buy a bag of potting soil and put them in the grow pots, but I'm not sure what kind of magic soil they're using and not sure if regular soil is packed with enough nutrients to get that kind of growth in such a tiny amount of space. I've printed a 3D hydroponics tower, about 6' tall. So much better. You can grow so much in a 2'x2' space. You could also just buy one of those 27 gallon totes from your big box store drill holes in them, put net pots in them with rockwool/pool foam and your seeds, put nutrients and water in it and put a $30 full spectrum grow light above and get a TON more food. Again, though, nothing beats a hydroponic tower for the amount of food you can grow in a small footprint.
Thanks for a clear, concise comparison of Aero and Rise gardens. I have two Harvests and a Harvest XL and am looking to go bigger. The one point of comparison that is missing is price. As of 7/14/24, the Aero Farm 12 is US$349, the farm 12xl is Us$449, and the farm 24 basic is US$449. The Rise base model is considerably more at US$ 799. Yes, there are more planting holes (up to 36) but they cannot all be used and the light height is fixed and less than the farm 12 or 12xl. Thanks again for the great reviews.
I accidentally left a jar on the counter with tomato pasta sauce in it....when i went back to it the next morning fruit flies were thick all over it!! So yeah you never know whats going to work the best.I could tell they loved it!!! I totally learned by accident!! Ive never seen so many fruit flies before!!!
I have two AeroGarden bounty and two AeroGarden table top grow lights. I use the old app so I could change the settings to the grow lights. The new app only connects to Bluetooth and not Wi-Fi. And there’s only a slider to adjust the light intensity for the grow lights. Very clumsy, I am totally underwhelmed.
Ugh that sucks. It definitely feels like there was some testing missed. Hopefully there will be some updates to improve it. Which tabletop grow lights do you have? I’m jelly…they stopped shipping to Canada and I haven’t been able to get one yet 😔
@@The_IndoorGardener the grow lights that I have are called AeroGarden table top grow lights. I I’ve tried pasting a picture of these girl lights into this comment, but I can’t.
I just got my hydroponic growing system. I've been watching a few videos before getting started. I came across your video and found it very informative.
I’m so glad it was helpful for you. How exciting to have your first system! If you have any questions let me know and I will do my best to answer them. Happy growing!
Bought some refrigerator ginger roots from walmart 2.5 years ago. They started taking up room and i planted them in a pot inside under grow lights. They grow like weeds. Mine havnt flowered yet but ive seperated it twice and had a bunch of new roots both times.
The problem im having is I can’t change the “grow days” number. I put a mature tomato plant in my Farm and wanted to set the days for when I started it from seed, but there is no way to do that. Instead, I had to start a “new garden” and it has preprogrammed setting, so day 0 defaults to “germination” watering and lights, which is watering something like 1 hour a day or week. It seems to lock us out of the setting and I had a hard time changing the light and watering schedule so my plant wouldn’t die. I really dislike this new app. It’s not useable. Ps: I did use the app to raise and lower the lights because my FarmXL is up on a stand and it’s too high for me to see the screen. If this app isn’t fixed, I will have to drag out a stool to see the screen. 😭
Ugh…that sucks. That’s a good point in using it to raise and lower the lights if you can’t see the screen. Hopefully they do an update soon. Really sucks they made it so the old ones doesn’t work anymore.
I just had a bounty when I first downloaded the original app. It looked the same as you described (the same as the screen of the farm models). I wish the smaller models could be used with the app but I get that they aren’t WiFi equipped. I just almost don’t see the point in using the app because I have so many smaller models that I have to check in on in person anyway🤷♀️ VERY glitchy for me at first. I got a low water reminder like 8 more times after I had watered it and it logged me out every time I closed the app. That being said, both problems have resolved. I’m an AG fan but I’m with you- they can do better than this!
Adding on that yes I prefer the look of the new app (and that it’s not in landscape anymore!) but why such a big deal over basically just changing the look? I mean why not just update it? Now they just have lots of disappointed customers on their hands
I brought home fruit flies from a large supermarket chain. When you go to the onion bin you will see onions that are starting to rot, same thing with a bin for the avocados they are over ripe. Unknowingly at the time, I bought produce there and then had a problem in my apartment. I have never been one to leave fruit out on the counter...and I am compulsive about cleaning, actually anal about cleaning. I did the apple cider vinegar, a drop of dish soap and water...worked great but I was still seeing the infant fruit flies around. I learned that the adult fruit flies will lay their eggs in the very top of my indoor plants. I read if you allowed the soil to dry out that would prevent the eggs from hatching. I also sprayed my houseplants with Neem....which actually damaged my plants. Last resort, I threw out my lovely houseplants and bought fake plants. I have done everything including pouring boiling water down my drains. Pouring bleach down my drains. I bagged and tied off my garbage so the trash bag was not open and I threw out my trash every day. I will no longer buy my produce from that supermarket and I am going to make a complaint because it is obvious they have a problem and they are not addressing it.
Many of the comments that you make could be answered by some more complete documentation, which people will ignore. But honestly, most of the pod kits don’t come with 24 pods, so it should give people a hint that you can’t plant all off the holes. Also, life is filled with learning opportunities, and gardening is no exception. I’ve had my aerogarden farm for about eight years and I love it. It gets dirty, sometimes gets algae and it is a struggle to keep everything growing but what keeps me using the aerogardens that I have is the great tasting vegetables and the many successes. People jump from one item to another because they believe the videos that they see and don’t try working a little harder at what they have. I always look at all the new gardens coming onto the market but stick with the aerogardens because they work. They’re not perfect but they do work.
to save tomato seeds , you just squeeze on a paper towel, let dry, put in ziplock bag, then tear off what you want to plant. place towel and all in dirt
Kiri have you read anything about Grow Lights damaging your eyes and wearing special glasses to protect your eyes from a light or so many grow lights in a room?
I read that the Grow Lights can harm your eyes, give you cataracts, and can blind people. Do you wear Grow Light Glasses? I have a lot of AeroGardens in one room. Thank You
