In the Eighties, a friend of mine, who had many of the same musical tastes as me, briskly waved off Mike Oldfield. I never actually asked him why, but I can probably guess. I think that would bother me a bit, too, if that were the case, but I don't think he is. There's also that guitar style, which does sound a bit demonic, if you want to think of it that way. But I really don't, so that likewise doesn't bother me.
Absolutely masterpiece. I can't believe even today, after hearing for more than 50 years (I'm 72....), that such music could be done by an human been...
I think this is one of the best live performances Mike has given that I've seen or been present at - its such a great arrangement of Platinum and Platinum is perfect for live performance and was written at a time when he genuinely wanted to play live, which may make it one of a fairly narrow set! Apart from missing his intro, he's also absolutely brilliant here, and its a very varied and demanding guitar part.
