Great video, I have had the black Pitt pens for years because it was a bargain, and except for details, I didn't know what to do with it, now I'll try black background! I have a tip for all those who are afraid of spraying their pages with fixative. Take your book outside (or outside the windowsill) and spray it as far away as you can without being afraid to damage the page and leave it outside to dry for about half an hour, if you touch the page and the color still smears on your finger (usually pastel) spray it again a little closer. But you shouldn't be afraid of it because I've been spraying it for years, and even when I got closer at times, nothing happened to the page.
Layer the inktense like how Nicola layers her polychromos. Layer them like that before you activate. Then start activating where the most layers are and pull it out to the area with less layers. I hope that made sense. Also multiple layers with dry time between. I almost exclusively use the first method, though. Should I do a video on this?
I am tagging @nicolalehmann7608 on this comment because when you said "how Nicola layers her polychromos" I knew EXACTLY how softly you meant. I love it!! And duuuuuh 🤣 you absolutely need to do a video on this one! I know it will be amazing and super helpful. TYSM, KK!!! You're the best!! 💖💖💖
LOL! I couldn't stop giggling about your speed comment. I don't buy these coloring books with all this tiny detail but I might buy one now and try this. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us.
LOL! It's easy to tell I don't script anything when I'm recording 🤭🤣 Yes, Debbie! Give this a try with a more detailed book and see what you think. I honestly don't always have time to color every little detail, so doing it this way makes it so much easier on me. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch, Debbie! 💖💖💖
I’m definitely guilty of having art supplies sitting around and not being used 😄 but I do try and challenge myself to use them every so often. With the inktense, I find that I definitely need to layer them to get the vibrancy out of the colours. I use a Tombow blender brush pen to activate the inktense without damaging the page (I always over water my page other wise 🤣). You have to be really careful with the Tombow brush tips though, they can be easily damaged if you aren’t gentle with them and clean them off regularly. I’m still not 100% confident with Inktense, but the more I use them, the easier it gets 🙂
Thank you so very much for sharing what's worked best for you with Inktense. 🥰 I am learning so much from everyone, and I'm so very grateful for people like you. It sounds like layering is definitely the key, and I will need to check into the Tombow brush for sure. I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me. Thank you again!! 💖💖💖
Your Daydreams book looks great! This type of video make me go through my stuff and review what I have missed using or need to learn more about. I label my pens with small stickers too! (thank you for that tip) FB Pitt Pens are great for small details as well as for basing. They don't bleed through and the brush tips are easy to work with. I enjoy using Inktense pencils especially in Kerby Rosanne Books. Thank you for sharing this useful list, Kim.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and ideas with me, Arte. You're always so kind, and your post is so very helpful. I will definitely have to try the Inktense in a Kerby book for sure. And I also plan to use the Pitt pens soon. I can't believe I keep forgetting I have them LOL!!! I hope you have a wonderful day, Arte! Thanks for always watching! 💖💖💖
Inktense - Colorfully Optimistic has used Inktense in Livestreams and gives tips/tricks answering Qs; as for forgetting your Distress watercolor crayons, I put them in a pencil case in color order intermingled with my Neos. Now I have them both fully accessible & don't have the forgot they exist problem. Keep trying and experimenting with your supplies that's the best way to work out the kinks. Use your mandala 📚 for the practice.
Marilyn, thank you for the tip on Colorfully Optimistic. I am going to check out her channel today - this is great info! I love the idea of putting the distress crayons with my neocolors. What a wonderful way to do this! And trust me, I beat up my mandala books all the time with new things I'm trying out. They are the best for that. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me. I hope you have a wonderful day! 💖💖💖
@@snickerdoodlingllc I'm happy to help anytime I can. Another RU-vidr that I follow (Elmcolors) put out an inktense video about 5mos ago for using them in coloring 📚. I'm a go down the rabbit hole watcher so feel free to do what works for you.
That fixative is a fear of mine as well. I don't want to mess up things I've created, and I don't want to spray all over the place!! 🤦♀️ I have an old can AND a new can. I really need to face my fear on that one... I'm really into the Neocolor IIs right now! 🌈 They are a lot of fun and I would love more tips and tricks!! 👍 I need to get that eraser! 🤗
Karen, I feel the same way about the fixative spray, but plan on being brave with it this week!! Yes! Neocolor IIs are my favorite thing right now. I'm absolutely loving them. If I can come up with any good tips and tricks, I'll definitely share them with you. You will LOVE this eraser if you get it. It's the best! 💖💖💖
@@Kreative_Rainbow OK I'm thinking maybe they just had a low supply to begin with because there is no WAY this dinky video did that LOL!!! I'll try to find an alternative for everyone. TYSM for letting me know, Karen!
So sorry to hear about the Inktense because they are my most favorite to use and when they came out with the new 28’s I got them from Cult Pens. I’m so obsessed with them and the smell, I will only keep them in the tin case. The 28’s did not have a case so I bought a 36 set so I could have a tin for them. My husband looked at me and said “How much did that set cost? And don’t you have the big set with these colors and the new colors too? I said “They were not as expensive as your cigars and the tin is way smaller than your humidor” he looked at me and was ok good I was just checking lol. We love to joke with each other and we don’t care but he was shocked because this was not my normal way to store or organize, I use whatever I can find. Anyway sorry for the LONG post. Have you tried using an alcohol or water blender? I like both because I use them for different reasons. If you use a water brush or paint brush dipped in water you can get a water-down look and lose some of their vibrancy where as the other two help bring the best of the colors out IMP. The alcohol works great for books that may not have the “best” paper and helps open up more coloring options too. Hope this helps and love your video
OMGosh I am laughing at your story with your husband and the cost of his cigars LOL!!!! Too funny!!! I have tried blending with a watercolor brush only, but not alcohol or water blenders. So interesting! I'll have to try this out for sure. I refuse to give up on these pencils LOL! Thank you so very much for watching. I always appreciate you! 💖💖💖
I love this!!! I am pretty sure I have this page with just one flower done in inktense but that doesn’t mean I can’t cover it with prisma…I’m def gonna color along with you!! Stay tuned!!
I agree with your pronunciation “Fay-ber” but don’t be afraid of that fixative! I have the same exact same can and sometimes I have to use more than 1 layer. Now, I know you are waitin on me to comment about the inktense struggle! Santa was very nice to gift them to you!! Honestly, you don’t need the additional colors. I find myself using probably 3-4 of the new colors MAX. If you wanna know which ones lmk 😂 BUT what questions do you have surrounding inktense??? As you know, they are my go to pencil but it took me a lotttt of work to get there. Finding some good color combos just playing around in my sketchbook helped me to break the barrier!! One thing I hear a lot is the strokes being seen. If you have enough pigment on the paper it’s impossible to see your strokes! I also tend to not sharpen my pencils unless I have to, and even then I don’t get them to a sharp point. I like to use them rather dull. This may be another reason I never see my pencil marks. I think you should hunker down and devote AT LEAST one page to inktense in the near future 🤔 I suggest a Hanna karlzon page just for the facts that I know the paper is good and you can’t go wrong with some flowers! I actually tried to use mine in some old Johanna basford books and failed miserably on the test pages with simple blends I can achieve in my sketchbook…but I also hear a lot of ppl loving the paper for inktense in those books. To me, they are simply dust collectors. Just my opinions!!
Jen LOL! You are the best & always make me smile! I am definitely going to be brave with my fixative this week. I will keep you posted! Santa (aka Mr. George) is always so generous with me. I love him dearly 🥰 I definitely have no shortage of sketch books lying around here and love your idea of playing with color combos in these to get the hang of the Inktense. I love your feedback on the dull tips and pencils strokes - genius!! And yes! Challenge accepted that I will do a Hanna K page in Inktense very soon. I don't think I would like the JBas paper for these, and agree with you these. Thanks for always stopping by and sharing your thoughts, sweet friend. I really appreciate you! 💖💖💖
@@snickerdoodlingllc you always make me smile! I cannot wait to see, even if it’s via private message! Don’t be afraid to share some combos with meeeee!
Kim!! Fantastic video!! 1. I love your color combos notebook-genius! 2. I love the fixative spray, especially for pages with pastels that may rub off. I take my book outside and lay it on my patio and spray like 6-12 inches away from the page all over and do a few passes. 3. I use the inktense same as my other pencils as far as pressure and opaqueness. Some people may be editing their pics to make them even more bright. Just something to practice and get more comfortable with! 4. One of my fav supplies is the blender pencil but I know how you feel about those 💀💀
LOL!! Nooooooooo not the blender pencil 🤣😂😅 Thanks so much, Faye, for sharing your technique with the fixative spray. I am going to be brave and actually try this this week. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. I will need moral support for sure LOL!!! Thanks for also sharing your thoughts on the Inktense pencils. You always make it look soooo super easy. I love watching you color with them. Enjoy your day, my dear friend!!! 💖💖💖
Thank you so much for your kind words, Phyllis! I'm thrilled to hear that the video is helping you. I'm here to help if you have any questions. Thanks so much for stopping by my little channel to watch. I really appreciate you!
I enjoyed this video.🥰 Lol, I have the same fixative spray you do for a few years. I also am too chicken to use it, so it sits untouched.🤣🤣 Also like you I use paper between my colored pages to protect them. I too struggle with the Inktense. Colorfully Optimistic put out a How to use Inktense video today. She uses an alcohol blender marker to activate them, and makes it look so easy. I do have an idea though, to purchace a Copic Marker Sketch, Empty Marker to fill with water, and try using that with the Inktence💖💜💙💚 I have used a Tombow Duo colorless blender marker to blend them in the past. I do think you have more control with a marker than a paint brush to use with the Inktense.
Thank you so very much, Stella, for taking the time to share your thoughts and ideas with me! I am going to be brave and try my fixative spray this week. Crossing my fingers LOL! Also, I love the idea of using the alcohol blender marker with the Inktense instead of a sloppy watercolor brush. I am definitely going to try this out for sure.. I really appreciate you! 💖💖💖
Hi, Sherry!! We can do it together!! We will figure out these Inktense pencils once and for all!! Here's the link for the lamp on Amazon (all of the products I featured have these links in my description for this video): amzn.to/4cB5V7N
Thank You Very Much, Kim! You're such a Sweetheart! Yes, these Pencils are going down ( on paper) lol! Do You watch Spare Room Studio, Jackie makes it look so easy to use inktense.😩
Thank you for your video, Kim! I have only started colouring one year ago so I cannot help you with your challenges (Derwent Inktense, etc). Maybe others can. I am very curious about the mandala in which Nicola Lehmann has used FC Pitt pens - they are my next purchase. Is the video here on YT or on Instagram. Have a wonderful week!
Hi, Ana! You are so sweet. Please let me know if there's anything I can help you with your coloring, ok? I'm always glad to help. By the way, here is the video by @nicolalehmann7608 that I referred to. It's a really cool technique that I keep forgetting to try out. I absolutely love these gel pens. I buy them in packs of 12 which enables me to over-gel-pen all my pages LOL!! I still use my desk vacuum all the time that you recommended. It really is the best! 💖💖💖
About the Derwent inktense. Why don't you try 'colour and dry' and then go over that only dry. I do that technique with my Caran d'ache Albrecht Dürer when I want more vibrant colours and it works. Maybe it will also work for inktense?
That's what I do with my Inktense and Albrecht Durer Watercolor pencils as well. Also Faber Castel Albrecht Durer Watercolor pencils match exactly to all the rest of the Faber Castel line.
Hi, Ingrid! Thank you SOOOO much for sharing this technique. By 'color and dry' do you mean apply the Inktense, then activate with water. Then after that dries, apply the Inktense💖💖💖 pencil again but don't activate the second time? I really appreciate you taking the time to share this with me. Thank you so very much for stopping by to watch my little video!
@@ingridjobst1618 OK I am highly intrigued by this technique and plan on trying this during my lunch break today if I can. Thank you so very much, Ingrid! You're the best 💖💖💖
Hello. My name is Wanda. I am new to the adult coloring community. I saw the lady mentioned earlier do the background with Distress Inks. I was so happy because I have so many colors. I have every color you used except black soot. Questions: If you do the background first, how long do you have to wait to color the pictures? And wouldn't the ink reactivate with any moisture from your hands? Thank you so much for sharing. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you how cute your alien is and those colors you used are absolutely gorgeous 😍.
Hi, Mocha! Thank you so much for watching and reaching out! You don't have to wait very long - easily less than an hour for sure. And I've never had an issue with the ink reactivating from the moisture in my hands. Because these are inks, they don't really reactivate at all. They are permanent, so even if you were to take a water brush & go over the ink, it wouldn't move/push the color around at all. With these inks, you would just add more intensity to the color by layering on more color. I hope this helps! And TY! I love my little alien - such a fund page to color for sure. Thank you for stopping by my little channel to watch. I truly appreciate you!!! 💖💖💖
@@lanettehudgins9905 Lanette, thank you so very much for this feedback! I’ll definitely consider more of these for future videos. And thank you for stopping by my little channel to watch. I truly appreciate you!! 💖💖💖
Good advices. I'm stuck with really dark GS books I've bought two years ago by Selina Fenech. Don't know if you know her books, they are beautiful but very dark and very challenging. Tried a few pages, but it didn't turn out well, so I hardly ever touch those now.
Hi, Loonit! Thank you so much for reaching out. I've seen some of her books but haven't actually colored in them. Is it the background that's really dark? I'm wondering if you could use distress inks over the background? Something very pigmented maybe? Also wondering if putting down a light layer of gesso over the dark areas would allow you the grace to color with lighter colors? Again, I've never seen these books in person, so I'm not sure which medium they can handle. I hope this is a little helpful? Thank you so much for stopping by my little channel to watch. I truly appreciate you! 💖💖💖
@snickerdoodlingllc It's not just the background. Many objects in the pages are very dark, it's hard to distinguish between the dark and midtones in the page, haven't tried inks or gesso, I'm trying to focus on the characters and other items in the page, I didn't get to the background at all. I've colored a few pages in the past, and it turned out awful, honestly. Thank you for your answers!
@@Loonit23 Oh gosh...I don't have any more ideas off of the top of my head, BUT now I need to get one of these books to play with the grey scale. I'm super curious & love a good challenge! I'll let you know if I can think of anything else for sure. 💖
@snickerdoodlingllc Oh, that would be so cool to tackle those pages, I'm sure you'll get great results! Thank you for your effort in advance if you actually go for it! Oh and btw, I have a different name, which I finally managed to change on YT preferences. It's Narind. So I commented here before, just FYI so you wouldn't think I'm one of those people who write from different aliases, I had a problem staying with one user name because of YT bug a something..
@@Loonit23 LOL you're fine - I don't worry about that. I mean, I have four different IG accts, so I get it LOL!!! If I get this book, I'll be sure to let you know what I learn from it. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with, ok? Enjoy your day!! 💖💖💖
It was funny to hear about the dead flower color. I have in my garden a flower called Hellebore; it looks like the flower your colored. There are many kinds of flowers with dark unusual colors. They're great for designing masculine floral arrangements. Loved your combination of colors.
Ooooh Hellebore! I looked that up and what a gorgeous flower!! 😍 I soooo appreciate you sharing this info with me - it's so very interesting! And thank you for the nice comment on the color combos. I always have fun creating those. Really appreciate you stopping by my channel!! 💖💖💖
I love the colors you chose...I have the neocolor 2's and pencils you used and the Daydreams book (this book and Atlantis are the only ones I like and have)....I don't see others doing color alongs in Daydreams book so this is nice to come across.. Thanks for the demonstration! (edited to add...maybe there a way to have it so there are short ads in your color alongs? it may make it more time worthy, I often sit through several on purpose when I follow a color along so as to support the channel host.)
Eve, thank you so very much for this feedback! I'm actually trying to color the entire Daydreams book right now, so I'll for sure keep this in mind as I consider future color alongs on my channel. I don't get to choose when ads show up in my videos. The YT gods do that LOL!! I have to achieve so many "watch hours" over 365 days. We're not quite there yet, but hopefully later this year. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to reach out and share your thoughts with me. If you try this color along, please let me know how it goes for you or if you have any questions for me! 💖💖💖

Beautiful work! Color along videos are my favorite but I've heard RU-vidrs say that the color along videos don't do as well as far as the analytics. I think I've watched every color along video that I can find for the books that I own! I can't speak for anyone but myself but I can tell you that I love the color along videos and I will watch every one you post!🥰
Nicole, thank you so very much for this super kind feedback! Yes, you're correct - it is bad for analytics for sure. But for me, it's the huge time investment to create these that is my main concern, as I try to balance my family time, my day job, and this little side gig. I do appreciate hearing your appetite for these color alongs, and I'll definitely keep these in mind for the future. Thank you for watching! I appreciate you! 💖💖💖
@@nicole_silvers definitely not saying no to these!! They will just not be so frequent. Is there an illustrator whose books you enjoy best as color alongs? Like Hanna K vs Johanna vs Kerby, etc? I am so grateful for your feedback!💖💖💖

Very pretty. Your coloring, and the colors you used are beautiful! I really like how you used the black pencil on the edges of the page. Yes, please oh please do color alongs!🥰💖💚💙💜
It turned out beautiful! I'm so envious of your attitude of not caring that the page isn't perfect when we color outside the lines, or when something smudged, I used to get anxious from all these things happening, and the page not turning out as beautiful or as good as I thought it would and with time it just stopped being fun and I stopped coloring. Now I'm really trying to get back to coloring for fun and not be too critical of everything on the page. I have to tell you this isn't an easy thing to do for people with anxiety issues, but I'm trying..so thank you for your encouraging words in the video. I wish more people would learn not to fall into criticism and perfectionism state of mind.
Gosh, thank you so much for the very nice feedback and comment! I had to learn to not stress out because I have mistakes on every single page that I color. LOL whoops! I'm definitely all about encouragement around here 💖 I have a video I did recently on coloring stressing us all out. You might enjoy it since it hits so many of these things dead on that stress us out when it comes to coloring. One page at a time, one little shape at a time. Just breathe, right?
