From artist Tom Harold comes "High Gear," a rolling ball sculpture created on commission for a collector who is a fan of auto racing. The sculpture measures 26" x 25" x 12.5" (VxHxD). This commission was a particularly unique and exciting one for me to receive, because of my collector's interests, which echo some of mine. He owns some unique automobiles, and he also races go karts in his spare time. I knew right away which direction we should take with his sculpture, immediately asking him if he had any spare parts from his racing kart that we could incorporate into the piece. He was very enthusiastic about the idea, and we put together some likely parts immediately.
By the time this piece of kinetic art wrapped, it turned out we were able to use some smaller bits as visual touches, but the real fun came in using his own kart sprockets and chain as the actual ball lift! To carry the racing theme further, I designed custom hubs for the sprockets that mimic those from the wheels of a 1964 Indy 500 car. As a final addition, I took a race car transmission gear that he'd provided and made it an integral decorative piece that can be removed if desired without affecting the operation of the sculpture.
This unique piece of home decor was so fun to make, using personal affects of my collector and fully integrating them into the workings of the sculpture. I'm thrilled with how it turned out, and so is my collector!
If you're considering a truly unique and fascinating work of kinetic art to enhance your home or office, see my web site for more examples and contact information. Facebook and Instagram are good ways to keep up with my work, as I post progress photos and short videos there almost daily. I look forward to hearing from you!
