Matt and Gillian bring an abandoned 1970 sailboat back to life! They name their Cheoy Lee Luders 36' boat Lee Hawk. This channel chronicles their journey into sailboat knowledge, sailing experience, and their passion for that feeling of being on the water under sail... a feeling we call 'Offshore Esprit'.
Yep, I've heard this said many times. I wouldn't be surprised if we shifted that direction once are able to spend a lot more time on the water, making longer passages etc.
@@OffshoreEsprit Already spent & installed. Plumbing isn't as bad longer passages, liveaboard, system is being used/cycled daily, vs sitting unused for a week+. Different environment vs land based. Perhaps a timed auto cycle a few times per day, trigger the pumps, flush pipes, s-bends, etc. Personally, weekender or liveaboard your boat size, nice diy timber box with proper toilet seat hiding that bucket with rubbish bag, pipe vent to draw odours outside, sawdust to put over, absorb any business. Bin it with other rubbish. Can't get much simpler. Any "friends" who turn their nose up at that, will prob think the same about your little sailboat vs the 50 foot trawlers around you, are they worth inviting out.
The boat gods if not the plumbing gods were giving you a break this time 😉 As said small jubilee worm drive clips can both strip and crush pipe and fittings. So .. caution. A piece of kitchen paper makes a excellent quick tell for drips under any joints.
Hi guys, I always used to turn off all my seacocks when I’m not on the yacht/boat it’s just good exercise. I’ve seen many boats it sunk because I seacock has been left open and a hose. It’s old and frail and down yacht/boat goes.
Hi, those hose clamp are not very good. Need to go to a marine store and buy proper ones they are for radiators on cars not for boats you’ll find they will let go at any time
On the subject of composting toilets: We've heard really good things about them, but for our boat's current usage (day sailing and weekending with friends / guest), we thought a simple electric toilet was the best ft for us. We aren't ruling them out in the future, but not ready for that commitment yet.
Orgoglio storico della nostra marina militare.❤ Proprio una portaerei americana la definì "la nave più bella del mondo". Per chi l'ha vista o visitata, è piaciuta?
Keep away from the back end of those ships.. Theres a company doing a twin paddleboard .. cat Two seat conversion for the boards with a canopy and you can hitch up an electric trolling motor.
It's a training ship of the Italian Navy , It's full of military sailors and Marine Infantry , if some pirates dare attack her, they're about to be surprised
This Is how the Americans calls her. They First crossed her in 1962 in the Mediterranean Sea full rigged, It was the Carrier Independence they flashed signaling : Who are you? And were answered : "training ship Amerigo Vespucci Italian Navy" to which they replied: "you are the most beautiful ship in the world" In 2022 the Vespucci was crossing the Atlantic in route to New York and she crossed the George W Bush Carrier from which was signaled :"After 60 years you are still the most beautiful ship in the world" And this Is why She Is called as such
Matt & Gillian, SV Lee Hawk is looking good. How rewarding is it to see all that you have done to bring her back to her glory? #jennapaints was fun to watch. I'm busy looking for something to have Jenna paint for me.
Gonna be honest, I saw San Pedro, Ca. I had to watch this because that's where I was born 52 yrs ago tomorrow at Fort McArthur. The signs turned out awesome.
Its nice to see a traditional craft being applied so effectively . These were skills largely transmitted through apprenticeships, whilst working on a young persons basic art 🎨 training or aptitude. In GB we have two additional traditional associated art forms Pub signs and canal narrow boat art forms that date back to the industrial revolution. Pub signs of course go back a lot further 😂🧙🏻♂️🇬🇧😉 Hold on to your wind vane ...they are expensive and valued items for Open sea crossings as they can steer a more organic course than energy sapping auto pilots and wear prone in rough seas. It you are convinced you dont want to re instate it then you will find a market for it...though they are very diverse in form and fuction.
I love a good pub sign! Especially in GB. The boat didn't come with a wind vane, I just inherited a bracket that was once used to help support one. I have no idea what brand or model, so if I got one for myself in the future, it's unlikely I would have used the pipe anyway.
Hi wow what an impressive signwriter. I think that yellow tinge is a lot better. It goes with the age of the boat. Anyway keep up the good work and always enjoy the videos from Australia the Thunder down under
That was a touching tribute to Gillian's Dad Leo. From the pictures that you shared, I sense that Leo had a way to show his love and support while being a tad bit playful with his comments. The timing of this video is crazy. I am about 6 months behind you in buying my first sailboat (C&C 30 mk1) and just spent last weekend painting a similar portion of the space behind a starboard settee for the purposes of getting more organized. Thanks Matt.
Industry verb for using a multi-tool is buzz. "I need to buzz off these pieces so the lid shuts flush" (Yallywood slang for the tool is "Le buzz buzz") 😏🍹
A sea berth is typically a single bunk, often equipped with a lee cloth, that can be used to sleep in while under way. Big enough to lay down, but narrow enough that if will hold you in place while the boat is under way or heeling...
Hi mistakes, I’m not a problem. The problem is if you keep making a mistake over and over again and you don’t learn from it. That’s when a problem becomes a problem Cliff from Australia.
Awesome job guys I need to replace my 8’ rib I think that Cat is a good contender as my new tender for my sailboat, I like the fact it goes into a bag can’t do that with my Rib, and I can’t stop wearing my OE ball cap.
I've been fighting with Amazon seller. They wanted me to pay $250 to return it and then they would reimburse me. I didn't want put more good money after bad and waste more cash. They said they would send me a replacement part and I could fix it myself... What a bad experince so far. So it's still sitting in a box in my garage.
💯 our first concern! Didn’t film it, but the team described the design and why we wouldn’t see that issue any more than water splashing over a typical dinghy. A lifetime ago, we had a 10’ (same size) Zodiac. So far, we haven’t seen a difference, even with more weight on the front. But we’re keeping an eye out for it and we’ll do a proper review after we run it through the summer season and when the “new and shiny” wears off!
@@SeaGillian Tell you what, you take that out in 2-3' seas and tell me how dry it is. That answer was pure nonsense. Zodiac dinghies are used in ocean applications. When I see that video how you're high and dry in real conditions (not puttering around in an enclosed body of water) then I'll change my mind.
Obviously not speaking from experience Jay. Like a bullnose I can stay dry if I need to. However like anything, if it's overloaded or not inflated correctly. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EDYZpI4WuwM.htmlsi=M4eU7nq8pApJ3eVS&t=70
@@jaysparcalso a great call out is the application- fortunately (unfortunately?) we won’t be facing many swells hitting 2’. We dream of getting “out there” but our neighboring marinas in SoCal and local islands are very protected. Just like the boat, all about the uses!
Hi, I have a 3.3m Inflatable Catamaran. Went this route as it's much easier to climb in at front from dive/swim, for both me & dog, + low weight for solo handling. Have an adaptor to inflate from compressor (dive hookah), however rarely deflate it, use it often enough, drying to avoid mould when folded is a PITA, I put it up front covered with shade cloth to better protect from UV. I power it with a Striker 24v 3 blade electric, equivalent to ~5hp (boat is also elec, so no gas onboard). All up cost me ~$1,500au (incl 24v lithium battery).
Yes! The dogs and the dive were the big sell for us too. Can’t wait to actually test both out! Love your system and that it works. We’re crossing all fingers we have the same experience.
I've met two cruisers now who both bought the Kiwi version of that cat both of them hate it, mainly because of water coming in through the transom and the tendency to submarine if you get off the power to quickly hope your one works out for you.
Transom splash is an issue without skirts. Plenty of info on google to resolve it. Dolphining can happen if too much weight up front. Correctly balanced (like anything) even instant engine cut off isn't a problem with mine. There's videos showing these things being used in waves to pick up surfers in the front, other than what they brig in with them, no issues.
Great call out on the dolphining- we didn’t experience it with stationary weight but perhaps with the doggos we’ll see more splash (which they will love 🙈). Does the Aussie version also have an inflatable floor or is it hard ridge?
@@SeaGillian It's not Aussie made, not aware of any made outside of China, incl Highfield & TrueKit, both available direct from manufacture for much less $ (without name screen-printed). Inflatable floor, same concept as stand up paddleboards
DON’T USE SILICONE! Big mistake. You’ll never be able to remove all completely later on. Silicone is for bathrooms , not boats. Use a marine grade sealant.
Welcome to boat ownership, a hole in the water you throw money into, while fighting to keep freshwater out and seawater at bay, yup my corporate sponsors are marine supply and Amazon, good work on the hatches, sweat equity always feels good, not sure if this is your forever boat but any projects completed are great experience and build confidence, when your partner asks you say we got this babe. Good luck and sail on. 😊
Just try fitting a closed cell foam Rubber door sealing strip round the cockpit hatch floor lip.. the other option is cork .. Take the pressure off it by supporting the duck board.. where its on the fixed floor. Ive heard Leaky Tiki but thats a new on to me.😉🧙🏻♂️ Dont expect the expected weather wise .. we are moving from El ninio to an El ninia event and things are getting hotter so more cloudburst.. Speaking from an increasingly soggy Europe 🇬🇧
