Despite only being in the business for five short years, Nick Drake's sombre sound and hauntingly beautiful lyrics still resonate in music today. He has influenced such artists as Robert Smith, David Sylvian, The Dream Academy, and The Black Crowes and is credited as being one of the most influential English singer-songwriters of the last 50 years.
Love to hear Fontaines stretch out & make Drakes song a banger, particularly love the sound of the Eastern sounding strings at about the 4 minute mark, wonderful
As a lover of all things nick drake to cover one of his tracks and do it justice takes something special , this is something special. Amazing version lads thank you 🙏
From the Morning: These lyrics are just perfect - they say everything but leaving you wondering about their *exact* meaning at the same time. Its a great version.
LYRICS Strange face, with your eyes So pale and sincere Underneath you know well You have nothing to fear For the dreams that came to you when so young Told of a life Where spring is sprung You would seem so frail In the cold of the night When the armies of emotion Go out to fight But while the earth sinks to its grave You sail to the sky On the crest of a wave So forget this cruel world Where I belong I'll just sit and wait And sing my song And if one day you should see me in the crowd Lend a hand and lift me To your place in the cloud
You can really tell how good and appreciated Nicks songs are as folks dont get all precious and pretentious about interpretations. We embrace them and acknowledge them for the tributes they are to such great songs - masterful songwriting lends itself so well to this ethereal and sublime interpretations. Thank you. Nick will be smiling somewhere.
I got in a Taxi once. The driver didn't look like a talker. He said he liked the way people sang with accents. Asked if I'd heard of Fontaine DC. He looked at me in the rear view mirror with eyes as sexy as this song. I spent the next few weeks listening to F.DC.
Its very good and it has to be tried i guess but i think the whole thing about nick drake is the mood and the mystery which is lost a bit when you rock it up . But everyone to their own ! 😊
What an insanely brilliant cover. Very few artists can truly make another's piece their own, while still paying huge respect to the original. Mike Scott of The Waterboys reinterpreting Van Morrison and Patti Smith spring to mind. Just brilliant. Thank you for keeping Nick alive. ❤
So glad DC FONTAINES joined in on this tribute. Extremely well sung and a very orignial look at the song; is there any further proof needed that Drake was a songwriter on par with the other sixties gods ?(I do not want to mention any names. Do I Bob ?) And what a great band DC F are ! If they can produce another couple of classic albums they will be on par with the truly greats.(Doors, Velvets, Beatles, Byrds, Stones, Smiths, Triffids, Go Betweens, Kinks, Who etc...etc.....
So sadly poignant. Is it agreeable that Nick Drake would have survived his depression, he would have been the equal of likes of Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, John Prine and the many other singer songwriters who lived into old age? Please always lend and ear or shoulder to our sisters and brothers in troubled times. Thank you Fontaines DC for a well done rendering of a somber and heartfelt song.
