I can't understand having to learn so much Python only to work for a significantly lower salary in IT. If someone is going to take the time to learn Python, they may as well aim for the higher salary that comes with being a programmer.

Thank you for the awesome video! This is exactly what I was looking for. I noticed you didn't mention the ENCOR OCG or the ENARSI study guide. I'm curious if you have taken a look at either of these and think they might be viable replacement study resources for the CCIE R&S v1 and v2 and maybe even the Routing TCP/IP books? Thanks again!
@jeremiahwolfe
@jeremiahwolfe 5 дней назад
No. Not even remotely. One of the big things people struggle with is understanding the step from CCNP to CCIE. I studied for ENCOR and ENARSI for a few weeks each, say 4 weeks each. I studied for the CCIE for roughly 18 months.

Great video - one correction, you dont need to buy a new copy of narbiks book tp register it as you as it only asks you for the ISBN of the book and then some lines within it, which are not unique. But make sure to get the v1.1 version which is out now!
@jeremiahwolfe
@jeremiahwolfe 6 дней назад
Are you suggesting that one just find the info online and get access to the workbook without actually buying the book? I hope not. It is such an amazing value. Why would you steal from Narbik? Hopefully I'm just misunderstanding.
@SBBUK
@SBBUK 6 дней назад
@@jeremiahwolfe no, not at all, the way you stated it is that you had to buy a new copy, but you could buy a used one too. I registered my own used copy in that way. Every little helps in this incredibly expensive endeavor..

Do you usually read white papers on every exam objective for Cisco exams? I’ll usually spend so much time going through the OCG, INE video course, labs, Boson, etc and then still have to spend a ton of time reading documentation to feel like I even have a chance at an exam.

Can I ask…. How did you adjust the mouse ?
@jeremiahwolfe
@jeremiahwolfe 11 дней назад
I'm pretty sure I address that in the video. But regardless, there's an icon on the desktop to open the mouse settings. When I first took them exam I was afraid to minimize the test environment. On my second attempt I knew that was allowed, so the first thing I did was minimize the test environment and look for the link on the desktop.

@@jeremiahwolfe thanks for the info. I done my first IE in Brussels 6 yr ago and I cannot remember much about it. I’m doing another IE in august in Texas this time so I’m trying to get a feel for what to expect. I’m wondering if you could answer two this … Do they give dual screens yet? Does the topology show the interface details ? (my DC exam was a pain if I remember correctly as I had to flick to resource drawings for interfaces when they could have just included it on the topology I felt). Thanks :)

I'm going to say something that may seem very rude. I don't want to be rude, but I do want to set expectations.. Researching (Googling, reading blog posts, scouring through Reddit posts, etc) must be a core competency for any network engineer. It is absolutely necessary. Every single lab image, from nearly every single manufacture, can be found within a couple of minutes of Googling. I'm not exaggerating. It just takes a couple minutes. IF you're willing to put in 10 - 15 minutes of searching, you will find that there are well maintained repositories of images that even have tools to automate downloading and updating the files you need, for free. (As always there are plenty of scammers and bad actors out there, so be careful what you download, but a little common sense should keep you safe.)

As others have said, copper SFPs pull 3x the power of a fibre or DAC cable. Use Fibre or DACs wherever possible, it cuts your power draw and heat output. And everyone also recommends keeping a 1 slot gap between copper SFP+ modules, you can put a fibre or DAC in the gaps, but nothing else.

Lol I also got locked out of my VMbox after following instructions for Linux+ on the fstab/partition topic. After deleting, and creating a new VMbox session, a day or two later my laptop cannot boot anymore, the system was not able to detect the physical hard drive. My co worker has to wipe everything, and download a new Linux boot. Mang it had been such a rough journey for this Linux certification

Since you have the switch placed on top of your pfsense box, you should consider getting the 12V for the switch from the old HP's PSU. If it's like any of my HPs then it should have a rather nice 12vO 80+ Platinum or Titanium PSU. All the power the switch could ever need, and far more reliable and energy-efficient than a crappy little no-name power brick made by china's finest.
@protator
@protator 29 дней назад
If you want to run 10G copper, buy a RJ45 switch. They're designed to deal with the heat. 10G copper transceivers produce several watts of heat each, while with fiber it's only a fraction of a watt in idle and still <1W with the link maxed out. The copper transceivers are the cause of both the power supply and the overheating problems you encountered. Not really the switch's fault. The 25mm fans probably would've worked as exhaust fans. A piece of cardboard and a few strips of capton tape to block off some areas and force more air over the ports ... you probably could block off the 'upper' two third of the board and there'd still be more airflow around the chip than there was with fully passive cooling.

@marburg7587
@marburg7587 Месяц назад
For these kinds of devices it's important to have the fans as exhaust rather than intake. The 25mm fans as exhaust would have drawn air in from the vent holes on the other side and created airflow across the entire board. You can see on any switch that comes with a fan it will be exhaust.

i saw in a video, that especially the copper adapter is getting very hot because it draws so much more power compared to the other fibercable options. I dont think overheating would be a Problem if you dont use rj45 and instead use fiber only. Just a hypotesis, but ift draws near to no power it should behave that way or?

if you use the rj45 copper then yes it WILL overheat, they get insanely hot, not the switches fault... stick with sfp+ cables...

@@jeremiahwolfe Wasn't pretty. Spent too much time on the first lab and that killed me. Didn't have enough time to finish the test. Could only spend about 4 mins on the second lab and ended up skipping the third. Very humbling experience. I attended a bootcamp that taught the official Cisco curriculum and that did not in any way prepare me for the labs on the exam. Kinda disappointed in that. Figured I'd see things in the troubleshooting sections covered in the course but it was well beyond that level. Now I'm doing CCIE labs to prepare for the next time I test. I'm on a very short timetable. Normally, I'd take 3-6 months to study and really know things. I attempted this one month after a crash course so I figured I'd fail. I took the test because I had a voucher and wanted to see what's on it. Lots of work still to do. Back to the grind. I think I would have done OK on the regular questions. The labs though were much harder than I anticipated. Got flustered by the labs and the terrible test interface. But now I know how deep I need to go to succeed.

“VLANS for days” this made my ears perk up. If that’s not really how it’s done anymore what reading would you recommend for current network design philosophies? Using VLANS upon VLANS is how we used to do it.. :( and tracking them was a massive pain. A little context. I worked in the telecomm industry for over 10 years then about 7 years ago got into the public education networking and Cisco phone admin space. Which is pretty stagnant. I too am going to get back to my engineering roots and need to start reviewing.

i recently got a sodola 2.5 + 2 10g - works great once you enable jumbo frames- the only things i would add to this would be maybe to make more vents in switch case to lower static pressure and pass more air and add more ram to opnsense fw in case you want to run intrusion detection and stuff like zen armor
@shephusted2714
@shephusted2714 2 месяца назад
build a cheapo opnsense box - refurb hp and add some nic - if you goto 2g you can get a 2.5g switch for less than 50 - do some content on the migration process, also consider doing 56(40gbe) dual port to a couple nas boxes - if you have 6-8 hd arrays you can utilize the speed - no fancy switch needed - dual port 56 connectx cards are like 40 bucks - you may want to get a bigger 10g switch and then use 20g bonded links on some connections - that may be the easiest, consider dac cables. lots of good info here - good content! I disagree with other comments about old gear - you save a ton and it will run forever with minimal pm
